N. Korea threats raise concern Kim backing regime into corner | Fox News

With the threats billowing out of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un's regime at an unusually rapid clip, concern is mounting that the young leader could be backing himself into a corner -- feeling compelled to do something or lose face.

Shortly after midnight local time, North Korean state television reported that Kim signed orders to put the nation's rockets on combat-ready status. In a photo released on state-run media, a chart titled "U.S. mainland strike plan" could be seen and a map showed missiles arcing into Hawaii, Washington, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.
Actually I'm quite amazed that no story has been posted in here. Does anyone else think this is newsworthy or important besides me? I think this punk is deranged.

Sorry American I had thrown it up in the B2 thread with the Russian response.....after we made our response. I was trying to keep them all together. ;)

North Korea readies rockets after U.S. show of force.....

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea put its missile units on standby on Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after the United States flew two nuclear-capable stealth bombers over the Korean peninsula in a rare show of force.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed off on the order at a midnight meeting of top generals and "judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation", the official KCNA news agency said.

KCNA said North Korea and the United States could only settle their differences by "physical means". The North has an arsenal of Soviet-era short-range Scud missiles that can hit South Korea but its longer-range Nodong and Musudan missiles, which could in theory hit U.S. Pacific bases, are untested.

China, the North's sole major ally, repeated its calls for restraint on the Korean peninsula at a regular Foreign Ministry briefing and made no criticism of the U.S. flights.

The news of Kim's response was unusually swift.

"He finally signed the plan on technical preparations of strategic rockets of the KPA (Korean People's Army), ordering them to be on standby for fire so that they may strike any time the U.S. mainland, its military bases in the operational theatres in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in South Korea," KCNA said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported there had been additional troop and vehicle movements at the North's mid- and long-range missile sites, indicating they may be ready to fire.

It was impossible to verify the report which did not specify a time frame. South Korea's Defense Ministry said it was watching shorter-range Scud missile sites closely as well as Nodong and Musudan missile batteries......snip~

Victor Cha, a North Korea expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the drill fitted within the context of ramped-up efforts by the Pentagon to deter the North from acting upon any of its threats.
Asked whether he thought the latest moves could further aggravate tension, Cha, a former White House official, said: "I don't think the situation can get any more aggravated than it already is."

Still, Hagel, who on March 15 announced he was bolstering missile defenses over the growing North Korea threat, said all of the actions by the North had to be taken seriously.
"Their very provocative actions and belligerent tone, it has ratcheted up the danger and we have to understand that reality," Hagel said, renewing a warning that the U.S. military was ready for "any eventuality" on the peninsula.....snip~

Who knows what he will do. Normal reasoning doesn't apply.

Who knows what he will do. Normal reasoning doesn't apply.

Sort of. Everyone is a rational actor. The A Priori Assumptions are the bitch to figure out.

It's very hard to take NK seriously and there's not much we can do but wait and see. Obviously, we have forces on the ground and nukes in the water and the air. We won't "lose" the fight.

But trying to predict crazy people is very hard. Pre-emptive isn't practical. So, nobody talks about ut much because...what can you say?

We could always stay out of it and let it be someone elses problem for once. South Korea needs to learn to defend itself.

It's not really newsworthy any more as it's their what, 456th threat this month.
Makes you wonder what's next... "this time we're really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY serious!"

Analysis: NKorea threat may be more bark than bite.....

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Across North Korea, soldiers are gearing up for battle and shrouding their jeeps and vans with camouflage netting. Newly painted signboards and posters call for "death to the U.S. imperialists" and urge the people to fight with "arms, not words."

But even as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is issuing midnight battle cries to his generals to ready their rockets, he and his million-man army know full well that a successful missile strike on U.S. targets would be suicide for the outnumbered, out-powered North Korean regime.

It's all part of a plan to force Washington to the negotiating table, pressure the new president in Seoul to change policy on North Korea, and build unity at home — without triggering a full-blown war if all goes well.

However, what North Korea really wants is legitimacy in the eyes of the U.S. — and a peace treaty. Pyongyang wants U.S. troops off Korean soil, and the bombs and rockets are more of an expensive, dangerous safety blanket than real firepower. They are the only real playing card North Korea has left, and the bait they hope will bring the Americans to the negotiating table.

More than 100,000 soldiers, students and ordinary workers were summoned Friday to Kim Il Sung Square in downtown Pyongyang to pump their fists in support of North Korea's commander in chief. But elsewhere, it was business as usual at restaurants and shops, and farms and factories, where the workers have heard it all before.

And in a telling sign that even the North Koreans don't expect war, the national airline, Air Koryo, is adding flights to its spring lineup and preparing to host the scores of tourists they expect to flock to Pyongyang despite the threats issuing forth from the Supreme Command.

War or no war, it seems Pyongyang remains open for business.

According to this.....it's all about Jong Un crying wolf after tooting his horn. Sure hope they are Right.

Kim Jong Un is not the end all be all dictator of North Korea. The entire political party runs the country...they prop him up to be like his father and grandfather...it is obvious he is not either of those two.

I'm more concerned that Obama has surrounded himself with second rate people.

Yeah, too bad we can't send Ronnie in to save the day. Honestly, you righties have a very short memory.

I concur.

There is no Ronald Reagan riding on the plains to give America a second chance.

During the early 1990's there was a General who just not talked for those who stood post protecting America but spoke for all Americans. "Ronald Reagan didn't save America, he gave America a second chance."

After the Vietnam War, America was morale was at it it's lowest in history. The Democratic Party had been hijacked by the extreme fringe of the radical left. Jimmy Carter was elected President and he couldn't even control his own political party.

The American military was a hollow military force by the late 70's. Morale was low with in the military because the American public basically despised them. 1/2 of the aircraft in the Air Force and the Navy couldn't fly. Navy ships headed to their AOR would meet the ship they were replacing and would transfer missiles from one ship to the other at sea. Most Navy ships in port had skeloton crews because there weren't enouogh sailolrs to man the ships.

Soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen couldn't go off base wearing the uniform without being looked down upon and having derogatory comments directed at them by their liberal peers.

The Soviet Navy finally realised they could defeat the U.S. Navy on the seas. The U.S. Army was no longer the superior combat force in NATO but the West German Army was.

The Democrat Party had surrendered and refused to continue to fight the Cold War and stop Communist terrorism and expansion in the world.

Even Jimmy Carter realised how bad the situation was but he had no control of his party or the radical left who had taken control of the Democrat Party.

By 1979 just about ever foreign intelligence service said that the Soviets see their chance to pounce upon Western Europe if Jimmy Carter were to be reelected. During the same time you would see the birth of the American militia's and survival movement. Not to fight the U.S. government but Communist troops. That's how the movement was born.

America was in poor shape back in the late 70's. Gas lines, double digit inflation, interest rates, etc.

Then out of the West came Ronald Reagan.

He rebuilt our military. Soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen could go off base wearing the uniform. The word "liberal" became what it is, anti American a dirty word. And Ronald Reagan is given credited for defeating the Communist and winning the Cold War.

Fast forward four years later, 1990/1991, the first Persian Gulf War. Probably the most successful war ever fought. It was Reagan's military who fought and won that war. And when G.H. Bush activated our military and sent them to the Persian Gulf, the political left tried to take to the streets and denounce the war and stab the American soldier in the back like they did during the Vietnam War.

But guess what happened ? It was the Vietnam vets who said you liberals may have stabbed us in the back during the Vietnam War but your not going to do it again with our troops in the Gulf. When the socialist anti war protesters took to the streets we out numbered you and stood on street corners all across America. We put yellow ribbons around the trees in front of our homes not in support of our troops but to give the finger to liberals. The yellow ribbon is a tradition of the U.S. Calvary going back to the 1800's. "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon In Her Hair."

No. there's no Ronald Reagan in the horizon to give America a second chanced to save it's self. That's why half of America are alarmed. That's why Americans are arming themselves.

The last time America was so divided was in 1860. Who is responsible for America being so divided today ? Who is in charge today ?

I'm more concerned that Obama has surrounded himself with second rate people.

I have the same concern for those whom he has picked to represent us overseas. As well as those whom he has replaced within the Military.

What the hell are all those ribbons for? It's not like they've been to battle in 60 years or something. Ever notice the generals, they cover the front and the back of their uniforms. Bunch of posers.

Well, to be honest look how old he is. Most of the Ranking Officer Elite are like in their 60's, 70's, 80's.

Considering who his father was, should we have expected somthing different.

Under "The Laws of Nations" >"Son follows the condition of his father"< Kim Jong Un is a natural born citizen and is qualified to be the President of a nation of bark eaters.

Well the people of North Korea did not have a choice in the matter.

An alarmist reaction on the part of the U.S. is what Jong Il is looking for. He understands that if ever there has been an American President to "try up," this is the one. I believe US missile defense systems would be 100% effective against any non nuclear missile strike against the West Coast, if it ever came to that. The effective result of a North Korean ICBM strike would be the waste of their ICBM's.

Kerry can't be any worse than Hillary. At least Kerry has some direct experiences with negotiating with our enemies in reference to Kerry directly talking to the North Vietnamese government in Paris back in the 70's.

Last week Obama appointed a long time liberal civilian JAG lawyer to be on an officers commissioning board. Looks like if you want to get promoted you better be politically correct.

I'm not sure, but I wonder if this is the same liberal civilian JAG lawyer who told the military they couldn't take out Osama bin Laden's convoy in Tora Bora in 2001 because the person sitting next to Bin Laden might be an innocent non combatant ?
