Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W:27]

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

One might ask the question, Why now?

My guess..... Someone in the Administration who actually believes in the Principles the College was founded on finally found out about this.

Does not speak well of the school's governance it it took TWO YEARS to find out about actions promoted by posters around the campus.

You and I both know that the people in charge of many of these schools are not walking around the quad on a daily basis. My guess is that the day-to-day administration doesn't give a crap, but when someone further op the foodchain found out.... you know, someone who actually believes in the Jesuit Principles, that's when this became an issue. We have a Jesuit college in the closest City to me... Worcester. Holy Cross. It's the biggest party school in town. The administration talks the talk but they do not even come close to crawling nevermind walking the walk.

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

If the condom group has been doing their distribution for TWO YEARS, it would not demand that an administrator of the school "walk around the quad on a daily basis" for them to realise that something was going on. Instead it seems to show a physical disconnect between the administrative and educational branches at Boston College.

And, I would suggest, at almost every other "high end" college in the United States. You and I both know how these places operate, Somerville. A good portion of these administrators don't even know the first thing about what's going on around their campuses.

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

Not much of an issue. Students can pass out condoms off campus all they want as long as they don't claim campus affiliation. As soon as they claim campus affiliation or do it on campus the school has the right to boot them out. Done and done...everyone is happy.

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

Last I checked, free speech protects distributing a pamphlet. Especially if it is being censored because of a position it is taking. The students are exercising their constitutional rights. The university, meanwhile, has no rights. The individual people in the university do, and their religious beliefs are protected. But the university as an organization has no right to either force that religion on anyone else, nor to infringe on a student's right to free speech.

But all means, religious groups, please continue to demonstrate how behind the times you are and continue to lose whatever credibility you have left. By doing things like this, religion makes anti-theists' case better than we ever could.

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

That's another issue, this one is about the students passing out condoms against University rules, after having been warned. Also, as a side note, I don't think the University has a problem if these students are in possession of condoms, or if on their way to a party they stop at the local Rite Aid and shell out the $6 for a box of them. But, flagrantly ignoring the warning, and continuing to do what has gotten you the warning in the first place is evidence that they deserve what ever the University decides is proper coming their way.

You don't go somewhere, make yourself aware of the rules, then demand that where you are change their rules to suit you.

See, I don't view the issues as being that much different. Granted I realize that I am looking at this as a person who lived a mile and half from BC so my view is a bit biased to what I personally know, but from the BC kids I know and the parties I have been to, the two issues are rather connected. I understand that the students have been warned and in all fairness to the school there is a CVS like three blocks away from campus, however, I don't think the school can complain about kids passing out condoms when they turn a blind eye to part of the reason kids need the condoms. It is very easy to drink on BC's campus, it almost borderlines on hilariously easy.

BC is a private college as far as I know....They certainly do have the right to enforce their rules.

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

Ok, yet another situation where religious private universities are being forced by progressive organization efforts to go against their rules....

Thoughts?

Did you not read the story?

It's the University via their campus police that are considering disciplining the students.

In this case, the religious views of the Association of Jesuit Colleges are being forced on the students attending a liberal studies college. Celibate men in the Catholic archdiocese of Boston are forcing their beliefs and lifestyle on 18-22 y.o. co-eds in Boston who want to practice safe sex. What does that have to do with a "progressive organization"? NOT getting pregnant when you aren't ready to have a child is a Conservative value, no?

Helpful tip: Read before posting, or at least before commenting in the OP.

They do and they can enforce this one if they want. If they wanted results though, they would enforce this rule AFTER they dealt with drinking/partying on campus.

Here's a "helpful tip" for you. Read the thread...This is a private University, and the students attending know full well that it is a religious based college. They know the rules, as well as the stance of the Catholic church concerning contraception. IF they don't like those rules, then they can attend another college. Simple. But, you don't start attending somewhere, then when you want to break the rules, accuse the place you're attending of "forcing" their rules on you...How convenient. What a backward way of thinking of this situation. If they want to go to a state university and pass out condoms I am sure that would be fine, but don't go on a private Catholic college campus and think for one second that you are going to get the church to change its stance on BC because you want to do it against the rules....

Re: Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms[W

Expecting college students to remain abstinent? lulz...

Distribution of condoms is not an underground activity, but a public health concern. The unofficial student organization doing it is performing a great service to their community.

The faculty should mind its own business.

Couldn't disagree more...The students should follow the rules of the private institution. BC is not saying that students can not acquire condoms off campus grounds (which btw, one poster with knowledge has already said is only three blocks off campus). If the students don't like the rules surrounding contraception in a Catholic institution, then they should attend a public University.

or....their campus, their rules and if you don't like it, get the **** out. I personally disagree with their policy...but I respect their right to make the rules. As soon as you want, you are free to start your own college and set whatever rules for attendance you like.

Hold it, not so fast, don't change the subject.

This is what you said in the OP:

That statement, your statement, is contrary to anything in the news article. No "progressive group" is forcing a private University to do anything. It's quite the opposite. The Catholic Church via the Association of Jesuit Colleges and the campus police is forcing students (of various religions and beliefs) to adhere to their rules. Rules that most practicing Catholics ignore. That is why I questioned if you actually read the article you posted. In the OP, you seemed to not have any real idea of what the story was about and were just making up some nonexistent "progressive" bad guy.

#2 It's a liberal studies college. Not a seminary. Not a Nunnery. Do you know the difference?

No, you are flipping it on its head...It is the progressive group handing out the condoms against stated policy, and ignoring the warnings from the school that has caused this situation. If this group doesn't want that kind of heat, they shouldn't be attending a Catholic University. Oh, and a note on what members of the Catholic church practice or don't, believe, or don't. The Church is not an institution that bends to the whims of the congregation. So, if the members think that the Church is wrong on the subject of contraception, it matters not. The Vatican is who sets the doctrine, NOT popular consensus...If you want that join the Universalist church.

#2 It's a liberal studies college. Not a seminary. Not a Nunnery.

No one said it is a seminary....It is however a private college. The course of study has NO bearing on whether or not it is a private institution.

Do you know the difference?

Do you?

If you don't want to deal with their Principles and Values, don't attend a Jesuit University, work for a Church sponsored business, or engage in business with people/organizations that have a well-known and (in this case definitely) well-documented set of regulations and values which are contrary to yours.

In my mind this goes to the same issue as the religious deferments for certain health insurance benefits and the single woman (in CA?) who got fired from her teaching position for having pre-marital sex. If you don't want to live up to the stated values of a group or organization.... don't do business with them. Don't get a job with a Catholic Hospital or a parochial school if you want them to pay for your contraceptives or accept your out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Don't go to a Catholic University and then expect that their stated values cannot be enforced upon you while you are on their campus. This is basic common sense, folks. Except that common sense no longer exists. It has been replaced with what I consider to be an Anti-Principle meme designed to destroy ANY and ALL belief systems and replace them with the moral relativism that is so rampant in this world these days.

What progressive group? Huh? Joe and Bill in their dorm room? That's the big bad Progressive organization?

See, this is where the OP failed. You came out with the partisan attack that wasn't backed by your article.

It's not a nunnery.

Jesus, people, read the article.

It's a liberal studies college. With a nursing school.

And a standing policy against contraceptives. Dont like it, dont agree with it, then dont be Cathloic and dont attend the school.

It's not a nunnery. You are right about that. It's a Private College which is run by a particular religious order. To expect that organization NOT to attempt to impose their morals and values on the school, its programs and its attendees is a little silly so far as I'm concerned. Personally, I'm much more surprised at Jesuit institutions like Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA which DON'T attempt to impose their values on their students.

I think you are confusing a group with the term "progressives".... See, progressives are like you who want the school to just forget that they are a Catholic school, with teachings, and values, and just let people break their rules at will in the name of progress.
