This is incredibly disturbing.
The "Monsanto Protection Act" effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of controversial genetically modified (aka GMO) or genetically engineered (GE) seeds, no matter what health issues may arise concerning GMOs in the future.

But the fact that Sen. Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri, actually worked with Monsanto on a provision that in effect allows them to keep selling seeds, which can then go on to be planted, even if it is found to be harmful to consumers

“In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. [Barbara] Mikulski turned her back on consumer, environmental and farmer protection in favor of corporate welfare for biotech companies such as Monsanto,” Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety, said in a statement.

Look at that, democrats and republicans can work together for the benefit of huge corporations with complete disregard for public safety.

Isn't bipartisanship wonderful? When they want something they can certainly get it done, and when they don't want things done, they certainly know how to pretend to bicker for the fanboys.

here's NPR's take :

Did Congress Just Give GMOs A Free Pass In The Courts? : The Salt : NPR

But a closer look at the language of the provision suggests it may not be granting the USDA any powers it hasn't already exercised in the past.

"It's not clear that this provision radically changes the powers USDA has under the law," Greg Jaffe, director of the Biotechnology Project at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, tells The Salt.

If you read the provision closely (it's on page 78, Sec. 735, of this PDF), you'll see that it authorizes the USDA to grant "temporary" permission for GMO crops to be planted, even if a judge has ruled that such crops were not properly approved, only while the necessary environmental reviews are completed. That's an authority that the USDA has, in fact, already exercised in the past.

And for opponents of the new biotech rider, there's this silver lining: Like the rest of the stopgap funding legislation, it expires in six months.

Monsanto has been a permanent fixture in our government for a long time. Corporations regularly get appointed to oversee the very thing they protect. Coal mine owners were the favorite appointments of Bush in the Mine Safety Department head.

The bill signed yesterday was by Bush. That makes absolutely no sense at all.

HR 933 is a current House Resolution by THIS Republican controlled Congress. Please make an effort to understand your government.

Expand on that. First tell me when I said anything like Republicans didnt help shape this bill. Then work on explaining to me how exactly I don't understand our government. Then lastly please make some type of attempt to actually address the post you quoted, or did you accidently quote that?

And passed and amended by THIS Democratic controlled Senate and signed by our Democratic president. If you have a problem with the bill then you have to blame both sides.

I know nobody forces you to buy it, we use heirloom seed in our garden.

An individual garden. How about the farmers in this nation or the corporate farmers whose use of GMO Monsanto Corn dries up the soil?

By lack of labeling, they intentionally uninform you. Without that knowledge, it is deceptive at best.

I use heirloom or specified non-GMO seeds also.

Amended enough to make it ineffective. ;)

Farmers don't have to use it. I know a wheat farmer that is very proud of seed he himself has developed for 30 years.

Which is very difficult and costly and most farmers can't do that. Monsanto has built up what is very close to a monopoly on seeds, and most farmers can only buy from them.

I support the labeling, because I want an informed public, but mainly I just don't want a ruthless private company to have that much power.

Well... no. You mean it was proposed when Bush was president? It will take a DEMOCRAT Senate and DEMOCRAT president for it to become law.

Aren't all private companies "ruthless"?

We don't garden for food nor do 99% of people. Even those who do still buy food from grocery stores - and those genetically modified crops not just be in the fresh vegetable section, but in all process foods, all foods served in schools and restaurants and the feed for cattle, chickens and pigs - for which exactly everyone will be consuming them - even home gardeners.

No, I was replying to the other guy that was trying to pin the bill signed yesterday on Bush. I wasn't saying that at all. Although I am pretty confident that Bush and all the politicians in office during his reign catered to Monsanto and other large corporations just as much as the current politicians are today.

It will take a DEMOCRAT Senate and DEMOCRAT president for it to become law.

When it comes to lining their pockets it will only take a SENATE and a PRESIDENT for corporations to get their way. Party won't matter.

The labeling and misconceptions in the food industry are atrocious. And in my opinion so is what we do to food for profit.
