'Monsanto Protection Act': 5 Terrifying Things To Know About The HR 933 Provision

I am all for consumer responsibility. You can read in the other thread we are discussing (we meaning you and I regarding wages). However, with food the responsibility first starts with those who are producing it. Cigarrette manufactures cannot run around telling you how great they are for your health. Neither can crack dealers (if they were sold legally). However food companies are given a green light to manipulate, decieve or flat out lie to their consumer base. If they are being in honest, the consumer has complete responsibility, however, that is not the case. People all day every day are told X is healthy and they eat it assuming that it is. People are destroying their bodies and believing they are doing the right things. It is not the same.

In addition, Monsato (and others) have successfully lobbied Congress to pass laws which forbid sellers from providing information about the product, such as whether it contains GMO's, or BHG's.

Their actions indicate they have something to hide.

We know they are putting highly addictive and toxic nicotine creating genes in plants, which I believe also sets up young people to be future tobacco consumers. What other genes for addictive substances are they also adding, to create other dependencies?

Since you can't trust your government and you can't trust your food suppliers, I'd say you're pretty much screwed.

Top Senator Apologizes for Monsanto Protection Act

Anthony Gucciardi Prison Planet.com April 2, 2013

Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland has released a public statement apologizing to the public for the passing of the Monsanto Protection Act, stating that the legislation was buried deep within a government spending bill that was required to ‘prevent a government shutdown’.

Well, while I don't agree with the furor, it'll be interesting to see if anything gets done.

There IS something wrong when your GMO corn contaminates my organic corn and they successfully sue you for stealing their imtellectual property.

Then theres the whole patenting heirloom plants and declaring THEM yoir intellectual property.

QFT. Folks need to watch Food Inc. if they think this is simply an issue of choice.

Its not just liberals who are concerned, but conservatives and libertarians, as well.

The GMO controversy ranks right up there with anti-vaccine rhetoric, global warming, and overpopulation scares for bogosity. GMO seeds will be the source of another green revolution that will make Paul Ehrlich and his supporters look like a fools AGAIN. No wonder some liberals are upset about it.

It's always fun to reminisce about past panic attacks and how we are all going to die because of powerful and evil interests with connections to the government.. Top 10 false health scares | Toronto Star

By nature by cross pollination, then by man with hybridizing. All 'external' methods.

GMO, or altering the DNA of a plant is relatively recent.
I'm pretty sure DNA being "altered" occurs every generation of any species.

You could literally list hundreds of baseless health scares that have circulated around. Chemo-phobia is pretty common in modern day, and as long as you use the big-word sounding name for things people will be afraid of it and think its toxic.

Some call it evolution. Each generation is living longer and is larger than the previous.

The daddy of them all in recent years has been global warming.

Some of these 'scares' have been worthwhile, such as the battle against pollution. A lot of it was over-hyped by fellows like Paul Ehrlich to the point where the predictions were just loopy, but littering (as a small example) did get under greater control through public education and, under Nixon, the government began the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Created the EPA in 1970 , the Clean Air Act Extension of 1970, the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 , the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Some of these agencies have gone out of control since then, as bureaucracies often do, but overall there had to be something done in all these areas. But for the most part these weren't 'scare stories', they were just public issues that had to be dealt with.

This is incredibly disturbing.

Look at that, democrats and republicans can work together for the benefit of huge corporations with complete disregard for public safety.

'Monsanto Protection Act': 5 Terrifying Things To Know About The HR 933 Provision

What is incredibly disturbing is not so much the act itself, but in how it passed. Monsanto wanted the bill, paid for lobbyists to get it into law, and someone anonymously put it into another bill that was totally unrelated but had to pass.

Now, you can debate the advisability of genetically modified organisms, but the practice of slipping something unrelated into a bill and getting it passed with no debate is just not good government.

'Monsanto' Rider Ridiculed by Both Sides, But Is it as Bad as it Looks?

"It means that if someone is powerful enough, adept enough or stealthy enough to slip a special interest rider into one of these bills, they get a free ride out of it," DeFazio says. "It is a horrible way to run government, but it does open the door to a select few who have enough clout or have made enough campaign contributions to get someone to do a special favor."

If we're talking about genetically modified organisms, maybe it is and maybe it isn't.

If we're talking about anonymously modified laws, it smells to high heaven.

If GMO seeds are the holy grail, then they can engage in market competition like everyone else. Does it not concern you that Monsanto has CLEARLY just bought off the White House to sneak this bill into passing?

Do you not see it as a serious problem that we just granted one corporation legal immunity?

I swear... the partisan bull**** in the U.S. is going to destroy us. Open your god damn eyes and look at what is happening to your country. Don't just wave your magic denial wand and say "GMO is great!" when that has nothing to do with what just happened!
