'Monsanto Protection Act': 5 Terrifying Things To Know About The HR 933 Provision

Industry has been given a pass to poison us. Monsanto should not get to avoid the tort process, especially if harm can be proven. This is outrageous.

The FDA is currently being petitioned by the dairy industry to have the ability to add aspartame to milk products without labeling it, even if the product is organic. Neotame, another sweetener, already has this privilege under the FDA. When aspartame's approval was already highly controversial, it's shocking to see industry getting a pass time and time again to add known toxic products to our diet, and we don't have the right to know.

There are things I miss about being in my home State but I'm so glad I got the hell out of the U.S. The corporate control of government gets worse and worse every year.

Where did you move if you don't mind me asking

Have to say, in this regard, they're my
booyman too. This sort of thing is going to come back and bite us in the butt.

I hope the libertarians will call the government out on this, because the republicans and democrats wont

Sorry, but we are effectively powerless.

I eat lots of veggies too. How can we be sure what we eat is safe and not involved with Monsanto? If it's certified organic?

This is bull****. Eating vegetables is supposed to be healthy, its not a health concern.

The fact is that organic foods kill, as we discovered in the USA, Canada and Europe, as well as making many people sick. I wouldn't touch that (literal) crap.

Monsanto has done some good stuff, some questionable stuff and some bad stuff, haven't we all. I'm not going to jump on the bash Monsanto band wagon but like I said earlier we use heirloom seeds in our garden.

Agreed, however their past warrants scrutiny and that should be biased towards the interests of the people, NOT Monsanto itself. You use heirloom seeds, the government should regulate Monsanto so you will always be able to do that.

How many people have died as a result of Monsanto seeds?

It seems science had made great steps in making food safer, water cleaner, crops greater, etc. and yet some people want to return to the times of mass starvation and the bubonic plague.

It seems odd that there are people so eager to accept the call of scientists that global warming is man made but reject science when it comes to our food. We are living longer and healthier lives which our ancestors would never dream of, and now it seems many want to return to those days of the 40 year life span.

Because in at least a few cases the new foods are not so beneficial. Why do you think we have all these gluten allergies showing up? Why are the kids having such a problem drinking milk? And I'm sure you've heard of the problems with monoculture.

In the case of our food chain, so many times those scientists aren't working in the public good but for the increased profit of the large grower and seed producers.

I don't mind profit at all and it certainly doesn't imply wrongdoing. Businesses that lose money are not necessarily more honest.

If you want to eat organic foods go for it, but it's not wise to feed it to children.

Despite all the processed foods and added, synthetic vitamins it's always been common sense that you can't go wrong fruits and vegetables. They come straight out of the ground or from trees; no processing, no antibiotics, and now that may not be the same.

Their profits are the least of my concern

Did you have to specifically search for something suggesting organic foods are dangerous, and this is what you came up with?

That'd be hilarious, that the one source you have is from the "Ag Aviation Newspaper." I mean, WTF? We should look to a newspaper about planes that spray chemicals on our crops to teach us about food safety? Are you kidding me? Is this satire? Please tell me this is satire, in which case I will essentially become one of your biggest fans, because that would be brilliant. Stephen Colbert-caliber, for real.

Beyond that, the various claims throughout that link contain exactly zero further citation. It doesn't even pass the most basic of sniff tests.

Are you really not familiar with the number of deaths related to organic vegetables?

Being critical of the source is an old and useless tact. Why not concern yourself whether or not the content is accurate or not?

Apparently not, but neither is your link, because it contains zero citations for its claims.

How would I be able to figure that out? It substantiates zero of its own claims. It points us to zero other authoritative sources for what it's alleging. It is the least credible source of information I could even imagine for knowing about organically grown vegetables.

I'm half-amused and half-dismayed to discover you were actually serious about displaying Ag Aviation Magazine as a supposedly reliable source information concerning organic vegetables. Seriously you must be joking. Maybe you should backtrack a step or two and start over. You're being absurd and embarrassing yourself.

It's truly remarkable that you don't know about all the deaths in the US, Canada and Europe from E.coli when all the information has been on the news and is readily available on the internet. Are you really that lazy that you can't look up the fact for yourself?

Here's another source, but of course there are dozens more. Articles: Organic Food Deaths in Europe Could Have Been Prevented

I actually read that link earlier this evening when I went searching for some modicum of substantiation of your Ag Aviation newspaper link (which I never ended up finding, by the way). Some guy defending himself against a critic.

The take-home from this link is that the author wants certified organic farms to be subject to inspections the way other (larger) farms are. That's an argument worth considering. But it doesn't support your earlier insinuation that organic crops are inherently dangerous. Careless agricultural practices are dangerous, whether Certified Organic or not.

Yes, when people are dying in the US, Canada and Europe (and probably elsewhere) from 'organic' foods then it certainly is an idea worth considering!

They are inherently dangerous unless rigorous inspections are done. There are links all over the Internet which point to the deaths of people who felt they were eating healthy natural foods, but of course diseases are caused by natural sources as well.

Very few people get sick and die because of food poisoning/infections overall, organic or GMO or whatever else. Overall these are extremely small numbers of people.

Diseases are caused by bacteria. They didn't just "feel" they were eating healthy natural foods. They were. The problem was that the healthy natural foods had bacterial contamination. The potential for this is independent of the organic classification.

Ive given you some information on those who thought they were eating clean and natural organic foods and died as a result. Perhaps you can offer some stats on other causes related to Monsanto, the subject of this thread.

Yes, quite.

They didn't just "feel" they were eating healthy natural foods. They were. The problem was that the healthy natural foods had bacterial contamination.

But apart from the deadly bacterial contaminations they were eating healthy natural foods. Then they died.

Spoken like a true believer.

How many deaths are you finding are due to bacterially-contaminated organic food per se? One of the links you shared (from Europe) identified 40. This link from NCBI/NIH says about 5,000 die from foodborne illnesses a year.

But you're right though, this thread is about Monsanto, a chemical company, and its apparent unmitigated control over our government's food and agricultural departments/agencies.

And how many deaths has Monsanto caused each year?

Instead we see crop yields greater, more disease resistant, add vitamins so that children aren't catching as many diseases as they once did, people are living longer, and so on, despite there being more people in the world. Crop science is good and it benefits all mankind. The evidence is right in front of us.

Posters mentioned heirloom seeds and they can be far better in regards to taste and freshness but it also might be better to raise your own if flavor is what your after and you know the conditions under which they were raised,

I've never understood all the hoodoo about Monsanto. They are the largest in the seed business, but not the only player.

GMOs are pretty clearly safe, and given how widespread they are, you can assume that any food that doesn't say GMO-free has them in it.

Monsanto isn't putting farmers at gunpoint to use their seed, and their seed is pretty awesome in that it cuts herbicide and pesticide use way down while increasing yield. More good, cheaper. Yay technology!
