Never ever, ever, ever has anyone seen a lottery advertisement or commercial that said that the winning the lottery will make you happy. Winning the lottery may make you happy momentarily, but it won't improve your happiness long term.

    Re: Americam dream

How winning a lottery jackpot (or being born into a rich family, or, for that matter, being super-talented or super-endowed in any other way which is not your own achievement) is the "American dream"?

It is the very opposite of the American dream.

Nobody, ever, in the Old World, had anything against finding a buried treasure - or catching a magical creature that grants wishes.

The "American dream" is all about the sober individualism - people relying on their own hands and brains - not birthrights or wild twists of luck - and succeeding, against all odds.

I'm pretty sure that winning the lottery would make me happy. Of course once I won it the first time I'd want to win it again and I'd be unhappy when I didn't....until I won it again.

Still.......a luxury suite at Yankee Stadium and a modest but stately 80' Viking.....mmmmmmm

Win the big lotto and you can buy a handful of congressmen.

I'd love to have a few dozen congressmen. I'd dress them all up and stand them around the yard as lawn jockeys.

You could make it happen. Those whores will do and have done anything for money.

Don't know where you've been the past 3 decades, but this is all the American dream we've got left. Our government whored itself out to the corporations and let them eat the seed stock of future prosperity. Only crumbs ever trickled down and now the path to upward mobility is paved with dumb luck and malicious exploitation.

    Re: Americam dream

We play a couple of times a year when the pools get really big. It is fun to dream about what we would do if we won. You know, a long trip to Italy, finding the biggest chunk of land we can find in the area (I'd love to build a long distance firing range) but we usually get hung up laughing about what the tithe would to our pastor. Poor guy. Can you imagine having to deal with that?

Yeah, we are those people. My father in law lived with us for almost a year while he got a lot of things straightened out. He's had hep C since a transfusion back in 1988. We all thought he was dying. We had one of those big drawing coming up while he was here, when I brought home the ticket my wife said " I wonder if 90% of that would buy Dad a liver" and that's as far as we got with that one.

In the end we got him set up witb SSD and SSI, he got a liver specialist and we were all shocked. His liver was in surprisingly good shape. They typed his genome and determined a course of action that involves 11 months of drug therapy that stands a very good chance of curing him. His liver will regenerate the damaged areas. He got a considerable back payment (about 3 years worth) from SSI. You don't get a check anymore, they send you a debit card. He has since used it to take care of his wife and two young kids and is currently in Alabama. When the school year is over he's packing them up and moving out here to Georgia.

I was here when he called and the automated voice told him he had nearly $30K on that card. Keep in mind he had been broke and depending on others for years, he can not work. The first transaction on the card got held up and he had to call in to approve it. Seems the SS office is just not used to people tithing on those cards.

    Ok, back on topic.

The American Dream is not about money. Money is nothing but a tool of establishing value and allowing a common exchange of value, it has no intrinsic value to any sane person, only fools. The "American Dream" is having the freedom, outside of established, artificial socio-economic class and boundaries to realistically pursue those dreams. Money may help you achieve your dreams, but really, money is not the dream itself, after all, money is not useful for anything in and of itself, just a tool to get what you value. What you value is the dream, having the freedom to pursue that dream is the real "American Dream".

Yeah, can you imagine?...Not only a shop, but state of the art, lift, all the latest tools, and computers, everything from wheel mounting/balancing, to a full service paint booth....My goodness...And all of it to do as a hobby between rounds of golf.
Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

I have that, less the paint booth. Everything together is about $100K. 3200 sq/ft, a 12000 pound drive on and a 10000 pounds twin post rotary, a full set of BG flushing machines, tire mounter, balancer, brake lathe, office and shop computers, top of the line scan tool and all my hand and air tools. You know, those lifts are less than $4000 new. Not a difficult goal.
