US plan calls for more scanning of private Web traffic, email - Technology on NBCNews.com

The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure.
As a result, more private sector employees than ever before, including those at big banks, utilities and key transportation companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a precaution against cyber attacks.
Under last month's White House executive order on cybersecurity, the scans will be driven by classified information provided by U.S. intelligence agencies — including data from the National Security Agency (NSA) — on new or especially serious espionage threats and other hacking attempts. U.S. spy chiefs said on March 12 that cyber attacks have supplanted terrorism as the top threat to the country.
The Department of Homeland Security will gather the secret data and pass it to a small group of telecommunication companies and cyber security providers that have employees holding security clearances, government and industry officials said. Those companies will then offer to process email and other Internet transmissions for critical infrastructure customers that choose to participate in the program.
It all starts with good intentions, and bad.

I have always thought it was funny that people thought their email was private.
If you use a free email service, your mail is mined for advertising data.
Your employer provided internet and email is his not yours, so what you send, the employer can view.
I think the same holds true for the company phones

Seems as though they are keeping track of employees of highly sensitive documents to this nation's securities. And the problem is?

And they would be doing it because?

Espionage, people selling corporate secrets to foreign governments. It's why they do most things. To protect the investments of the rich.

What do you think google IS??

Google being involved with the NSA since its inception. You are getting information, and google logs and tracks even what you are thinking about... And with smartphones, people are telling google about themselves on a minute to minute basis.

People dont really care much about privacy anymore.
Who are these people that don't care about privacy anymore?

Who are these people that don't care about privacy anymore?

The ones who literally give away every conceivable piece of personal information to Google.

Which is basically everybody.

The US doesn't need to even scan this information themselves, they can just get a contract with Facebook and Google and have 90% of it right there.

There's a story about Target's marketing software successfully identifying a teenage girl was pregnant before she'd even told her father, and sent her maternity ads in the mail. He wasn't thrilled.

Read the TOS on the free e-mail services like Google,Yahoo and such. Read the TOS on your smart phone accounts. They all keep track of what you send and say. You give up your privacy anytime you use one of them. E-mails and phone calls from a companies servers or phone switches are not private. Every time you use any of the above you willing give up your privacy

I agree. I was just kidding around. The big providers have been in bed with the government for years. It's a quid pro quo arrangement.

A few things:

1. Carnivore (software) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2. I don't know about you, but when I cut my teeth on the Internet as it was becoming available to the public, and my understanding of e-mail was always that it was the equivalent of writing your correspondence on the back of a post card. If you want privacy, you encrypt. That's why the government faught PGP for so long and why key escrow was such a hot topic for so long.

3. Pretty much every free service on the Internet scans your correspondence and usage patterns for marketing data.

4. The search engines retain and market your usage patterns too.

5. Not saying this is a good thing, but if you really care about online privacy you need to take steps rather than just bitching about what the government has been doing for years.

People dont really care much about privacy anymore.

But they sure love to bitch and moan about it. It gives the minions something to rail against the gov.

what a lame ass response. "I WANT NAMES".

Here, let me entertain you.

Do you own a cell phone, do you use free email services, do you use major search engines? If so, YOU

This thread is such a fail it's funny.

IKR, I was very much weirded out today when I logged into my google account on a new laptop (my desktop needs a replacement part) and not only did all of my bookmarks transfer to Chrome which I was expecting, but my history and search terms transferred as well. I thought those were stored client-side.

Even the login username and passwords for sites were saved. Its like I never changed computers...

People dont really care much about privacy anymore.

I certainly still do, though I have a reduced expectation on the net despite my privacy settings I still expect all government agencies and law enforcement to respect my rights and seek with good reason a warrant from a judge for any violations of my privacy, tracking of my data or snooping into my e-mail/bank accounts.

I do not consider this an unreasonable expectation as a citizen.
