Citing the minimal support for legislation that would ban assault weapons, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said today that he would leave the proposal out of the gun violence bill he'll bring to the Senate floor. Instead, the assault weapons ban will be offered as an amendment to the bill, along with several other less popular ideas.

"I have said time and time again I want people to have the ability to vote on assault weapons, mental health, safety in schools, federal trafficking, clips -- everything," Reid told reporters this afternoon. "But I cannot do that until I get a bill on the floor."

Reid explained that he'll need to find a bill to bring to the Senate floor that has at least 60 votes of support -- enough to bypass a Republican filibuster and start debate. Once debate has started on that bill, the Senate can vote on amendments, such as the assault weapons ban authored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

Feinstein's legislation passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, but Reid explained today that it wouldn't clear the filibuster hurdle.

"Right now her amendment, using the most optimistic numbers, has less than 40 votes. That's not 60," he said. It's more likely, Reid added, that he would bring to the floor one of the background check proposals currently in the works.

Good call, but I think his future optimism is unfounded. I don't see an AWB passing anytime soon.

Shocking....... I mean really, I'm floored by this revelation. I can't believe no one saw coming. I'm truly heart broken to see this shelved.

FYI, lofty dose of sarcasm, please don't yell at me!!

It would never pass the House anyway. This is little more than posturing to keep this the issue for the midterms.

Bill Clinton told them to not underestimate the pro-2nd Amendment folks. They did and they lost. Being from Arkansas, I think Clinton would know something about this.

Does anyone, I mean anyone, believe Reid will ever allow any Bill to a vote that he doesn't support?

I believe he will never allow a bill to come to the floor that will make the dems look bad when it goes down in flames and cause the GOP to gain seats by knocking off conservative dems next election.

It's the kind of thing that would have a better chance of passing if Democrats were in control of the Senate and the House so it makes sense to throw that part of the bill away.

In any case, shelving it isn't a loss or a gain. It wouldn't have had a positive or negative effect on safety.

They should really start genuinely tackling poverty if they want to put a real dent in crime, but that's not going to happen.

They've been tackling poverty for 40 years and all the effort has yielded, are more poor people.

IMO, it's all about how you tackle poverty. There should be more of a long term focus on helping people get good jobs and skills. Too often we only help with money which is very short term and doesn't do much if anything to fix the problem.

Hence my use of the word "genuinely."

How would you suggest we, "genuinely" tackle poverty? We've been throwing money at poor people for decades. America has the richest poor people in the world. What's your solution?

I agree with that and a good first step would be for politicians to stop killing jobs for political reasons.

However, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. Believe it, or not, there are a lot of poor people that are poor because they won't get off their asses and improve their lives.

Maybe it has something to do with the Second Amendment?

Progressives for some screwed up reason think scare-tactics will somehow get them what they want...

IMO, an AR to a cats face is enough for them...

Mew the cat...

They didn't even have 50 votes, let alone the 60 needed to pass a filibuster, so why bother? It wasn't about his supporting it or not.

Please post that chart explaining how poor people aren't poor because 97% of them have refrigerators!

And then explain to me how you see all these welfare queens buying food with EBTs but holding an iphone, as if an iphone means they aren't poor.

Dingy Harry choose this course of non action for one reason and one reason ONLY, "red state democrats", which translates to him retaining leadership.

I am glad to see the AWB foolishness being tabled once again. School shootings are a tragedy, but they won't be prevented through knee-jerk emotional legislation.

Please show me where I said any of that...thaaaaaaaanks!

Um, my post clearly indicates that you didn't say or do any of that. Requests generally imply a future tense.

But when people start talking about how poor Americans aren't really poor, they start bringing up flat screens and iphones. And then they start with some low-level racial stereotyping, because they're always picturing black people when they picture this "welfare queen." I thought I'd head off that idiotic line of discussion, and it seems to have worked.

He had to let Feinstein try.

Well one thing is sure, not even getting 40 votes for in the senate will tell Obama what he can do with his polls.......

Again, I never said that poor Americans aren't really poor. Stop saying you didn't say what you said.

Actually the AWB was not shelved but rather broken off into a seperate bill which Harry Reid promised to bring to the floor for a vote.

I think what you meant is there is no way he can get the AWB thru honestly so he has to trick Congress in to passing it by accident.

He had to let Feinstein try.

I was hoping it came to a vote in the senate so we could have pummeled the dems who voted for it in 2014 in states where gun rights are taken seriously. A repeat of 1994 except Finetard's turd wouldn't have passed in the house.
