Sounds like they were training blowing up caches. Sad.

What's heroic about blowing yourself and your pals to kingdom come? As the NRA would say, "A responsible blower-upper wouldn't have done that"

These are American service members, who died doing their job. Please don't crap on their memory.

That they died serving their country.

God bless them and their families - regardless of what you do in life, it's very sad, particularly for a family, when someone doesn't come home from work at the end of the day.

These are people who signed up for a job they knew full well could take their life or result in serious bodily harm. Why? Not for money or fame, but to defend their country. Whether in training or in combat paying the ultimate price is pretty ******* heroic.

Wrong thread for trying to be funny dude.

Sad.. Another tragedy.

media on tv mentioned a live mortar round
Seven Marines were killed and eight wounded late Monday when a 60mm mortar round exploded during a training exercise at the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada, according to military and defense officials.
A senior defense official said it appears that a mortar round exploded inside a firing tube instead of flying out. The official, speaking on background, cautioned that initial reports on the incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. Monday, could change on the cause.

such a loss
Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, the area's major trauma hospital, took nine patients, including one who died, three who are in serious condition and five who are in fair condition, according to spokeswoman Stacy Kendall. All the patients are men under the age of 30, she said. Kendall described their injuries as penetrating trauma, fractures and vascular injuries.

7 Marines killed in blast at Nevada training center

Thanks for that piece JB. The Marines also issued a indefinite moratorium on all Mortar Rounds World Wide. Until it is cleared to be safe.

The Marines were part of the 2nd Marine Division, a ground combat force based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Marines immediately issued an indefinite moratorium on firing of all such mortars worldwide until an investigation clears as safe the type of weapon and ammunition in the tragedy.

The 60mm mortar is a weapon that traditionally requires three to four Marines to operate, but it's common during training for others to observe nearby.

The 230-square-mile desert facility, located about 140 miles southeast of Reno, stores conventional ammunition being taken out of use and, according to its website, also serves as "a premier training location for special forces."

The U.S. Joint Munitions Command says on its website that the depot is an "archive site" for storing slow-moving ammunition and stocks awaiting disposal.

The facility has more than 2,915 structures including igloos, supply warehouses, maintenance buildings, munitions sheds, and office buildings.....snip~

Army, Navy and Marine troops train year-round at the facility, which also provides training for foreign military nationals.

So explain how heroic it is to be blown up while practising blowing **** up.

It's line of duty. They weren't scumbags mixing crap in their mom's basement to target civs.

They signed up for their country. That's heroic. Regardless of how they died. No one said they were heroes because they got blown up. You'd understand that if you weren't so busy trying to be a nuisance.

Shameless Harry Reid Uses Dead Marines to Fearmonger on Sequester.....

As Ben Shapiro would say, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is dancing on the graves of dead Marines in order to score political points. Today during remarks on the Senate floor about an explosion at an Army base in Nevada last night that killed seven Marines during a training exercise, Reid shamelessly implied sequestration and cut backs in funding were to blame for the accident.

Just for clarification purposes, when Reid referred to "Mr. President" during his remarks, it wasn't in reference to President Obama, but the presiding officer of the U.S. Senate.

The Marine Corps isn't happy:

NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports: Now I can tell you, Marine Corps officials this afternoon are taking a strong exception to what Harry Reid implied. Saying that this exercise, for example, was planned well in advance, had nothing to do with the budget cuts. There were no corners cut, and if they couldn't afford to have all the safety precautions into place, they wouldn't do the exercise.

And in fact, one Marine Corps official told us a short time ago that he considers this nothing but pure political posturing on the backs of these dead Marines.....snip~

Looks like Good Ole Harry proves what a scumbag he is and has always been. Seems he has the same concept as Hillary. What difference does it make.!

They deserve our respect for enlisting in the service. If you can't do that, move on.

You're not going to find too many people that will side with you on ridiculing servicemen who died in the line of duty.

Pentagon bans 60 mm mortar round after deaths.....

HAWTHORNE, Nev. (AP) — A mortar shell explosion killed at least seven Marines and injured several more during mountain warfare training in Nevada's high desert, prompting the Pentagon to immediately halt the use of the weapons until an investigation can determine their safety, officials said Tuesday.

The explosion occurred Monday night at the Hawthorne Army Depot, a sprawling facility used by troops heading overseas, during an exercise involving the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C. Several Marines from the unit were injured in the blast, authorities said.

The Pentagon expanded a temporary ban to prohibit the military from firing any 60 mm mortar rounds until the results of the investigation. The Marine Corps said Tuesday a "blanket suspension" of 60 mm mortars and associated firing tubes is in effect.

The Pentagon earlier had suspended use of all high-explosive and illumination mortar rounds that were in the same manufacturing lots as ones fired in Nevada.

The mortar has changed little since World War II and remains one of the simplest weapons to operate, which is why it is found at the lowest level of infantry units, said Joseph Trevithick, a mortar expert with Global Security.org.

"Basically, it's still a pipe and it's got a firing pin at the bottom," Trevithick said. Still, a number of things could go wrong, such as a fuse malfunction, a problem with the barrel's assembly, or a round prematurely detonating inside the tube, he said.

The official said it would be normal to warn other U.S. military branches that use 60 mm mortars, such as the Army, about the Marines warning. The moratorium could last for weeks or months.
