New York Mayor Wants to Ban Stores From Displaying Cigarettes......

Cigarettes.

Well they aren't banned online just a lot of hassle. Well doing a Google I can't find any websites that look like you would want to put your credit card information into. If you wanted to buy them from the U.S. there is import duty on top of shipping charges so in the end it's easier just to go to a convenience store.

Seems like Bloomberg is on some kind of crusade to control what he doesn't like. The guy is a loose cannon!

I would agree. Although short people at least wont have anything to worry about. ;)

There are literally hundreds of sites reliably selling them. They are totally tax free and even with shipping that makes them less than half counter price. But there is the hassle factor. Because it's not strictly legal they are sent plain brown wrappered and seem to take forever for delivery. Three weeks to a month sometimes, so you have to get your order cycle down. Plus, you never know, until you have some experience with a reliable outfit, how old the cigs will be.

If you're a bulk shopper who plans ahead it's a great deal. I tried it for a bit, but I'm a procrastinator and it didn't suit me.

I mean Canadian sites, they seem to be few and like I said if get them from the U.S. and you have to pay import taxes on top of shipping.

I'm just waiting for him to start writing legislation on telling them what will make them happy.

Good afternoon., MMC.

:funny: I'd almost settle for legislation, considering he'd probably rather write and sell a book...a very long, boring book... but I understand he's having a bit of a problem finding a publisher who's even remotely interested :lamo

Why not?

Banning people sounds like fun. Oh yeah we call that a purge - still sounds like fun.

It no longer surprises me of what slithers out from underneath the Democrat tent now days. Be it Michale Bloomberg, Nancy Pelosi, David Duke, even Barack Obama.

BTW: Bloomberg and Duke were both life long Democrats who changed their political party registration thinking it would help them get elected.

The thing I hate about cigarettes and smokers is that when they're in front of you at the market, it always slows things down when the checker has to look for their special brand on the wall or behind the counter. The smoker points and calls out the brand name several times while the checker looks around. Also, I've noticed a lot of smokers like to pay with change, pennies, nickels, dimes and lint.... The checker has to stop and count out $4 worth of dirty change and then tell the smoker, he's short 30 cents. It's at that point the smoker whips out a credit card... Which usually doesn't work either.

If NYC wants to ban something, why not start with the "stupid pills" - bloomberg is clearly an addict.

You mean the self-made billionaire, that Michael Bloomberg? The billionaire who finances his own campaigns so he doesn't own anyone any political favors?

Bloomberg is one of the most intelligent, respected, and successful people in America.

Yup, that guy.
Bloomberg is one of the most intelligent, respected, and successful people in America.
Respected? He's currently one of the most laughed at people in America.

I don't understand what this will do.

A smoker buys cigarettes because his body is asking for the nicotine. He doesn't care where they are kept.

I don't see the point.

Has anybody ever seen cigarettes in a store and thought that you wanted to try them? I don't think so.

Well his intelligence is questionable, but I don't think there is even a debate about whether he is respected in politics.

Think about Donald Trump, he has been incredibly successful and is largely respected in business, but he is viewed as a joke when he steps into the political arena. If success as a businessman was all that mattered, Trump might have been able to run in and even win the 2012 election.

Bloombergs ratings are not doing badly. Better than most republicans

:thinking how many times has Trump gone broke and left other people holding the bag?

I guess the government should be dictating everything we do in order to maximize health efficiency. Why are you on the internet instead of being at the gym, citizen?

Bloomberg has every right to do this. I don't know what all the fuss is about. This is precisely the sort of thing that local governments are for - and if you don't like it, don't live in NYC or vote for the other guy.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm about to go outside and light one up.

The First Amendment says otherwise.

Given your religious views I'm not surprised you welcome the moral paternalism.

The First Amendment says otherwise.

The first amendment says nothing about commerce. It's the freedom of religion, freedom of speech amendment.

Are you trying to argue that smoking is speech? I have a tough time saying words when I'm inhaling,

The only one being patronizing is you, if you want to deny New Yorkers the right to run their city however they see fit.

I don't think this is how too many New Yorkers want their city run.

Advertising is tied to the First. Whether by Product or In Pictures and print.....also try not talking thru your nose when inhaling. ;)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday proposed requiring that cigarettes be hidden from view in retail stores as a means to reduce smoking in what he said would be the first law of its kind in the United States.

Bloomberg plans to introduce to the City Council on Wednesday two bills that would require retailers to keep cigarettes in a drawer, behind a curtain or in some other concealed location.

Some retail trade groups and tobacco companies criticized the proposed display ban as an unnecessary burden.

"These laws would protect New Yorkers, especially young and impressionable New Yorkers, from pricing, discounts and exposure to in-store displays that promote tobacco products," Bloomberg told a news conference at a city hospital.

"Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity and they invite young people to experiment with tobacco. This is not a normal activity," he said.

Stores would still be allowed to advertise and display pricing information but the actual tobacco products would only be visible during a sale or restocking.

Under current federal and state laws, cigarettes must be accessible only to a store's cashiers, and in many city stores they are prominently stacked on a wall behind the cash register.

The proposal would also increase penalties on stores that illegally resell cigarettes smuggled in from states with lower tobacco taxes, which Bloomberg said cost the city $30 million in lost tax revenue every year.

This guy is something.....huh? Is he willing to give up all the money that is made off of Cigarettes? Ready to give up those taxes over cigarettes? He will decide for all New Yorkers.....huh? How can NYers put up with this guy? To top it off they give this POS a 3third term. First Salt in foods, then Sugary Drinks, and Now Cigarettes. What's Next Beer and Alcohols?

Lol... Follow the money. Losing revenue on cigs huh? Wonder how else he is making money.
