New York Mayor Wants to Ban Stores From Displaying Cigarettes......

No but its it's horribly unpleasant. It is also in society's best interest to reduce the rate of smoking. All the other products do not necessarily cause harm if you moderate consumption while there is no such thing with cigarettes.

Meh, I feel the same way about car exhaust. Yet you buggers just keep on driving anyway.

Yeah and you can get them online as well. Not supposed to because it avoids all the federal and state taxes, but they've been unable to stop it.

Can't get them online here. Surprisingly you can buy an AR-15 with an RPAL online here, cigarettes nope. I guess you might be able to import them form the U.S> or another province but no one wants to go through all that hassle.

Its disgusting and it's a public health issue. I can walk anywhere here without having to worry about choking to death on cigarette smoke, my eyes burning, or my lungs being damaged.

Psychosomatic. If it were an actual condition you have expired from car exhaust years ago.

Sorry I'm assuming I should be able to walk in a public place without choking and eyes burning because people decide to just light up cigarettes. Reducing cigarette use is a good thing, there is no con to it. Being able to know I can go anywhere I want and know there won't be people smoking.

If you're that environmentally sensitive perfumes, deodorants, body sprays, and even farts are deadly to you. The public area might not be a good fit in that case.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday proposed requiring that cigarettes be hidden from view in retail stores as a means to reduce smoking in what he said would be the first law of its kind in the United States.

Bloomberg plans to introduce to the City Council on Wednesday two bills that would require retailers to keep cigarettes in a drawer, behind a curtain or in some other concealed location.

Some retail trade groups and tobacco companies criticized the proposed display ban as an unnecessary burden.

"These laws would protect New Yorkers, especially young and impressionable New Yorkers, from pricing, discounts and exposure to in-store displays that promote tobacco products," Bloomberg told a news conference at a city hospital.

"Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity and they invite young people to experiment with tobacco. This is not a normal activity," he said.

Stores would still be allowed to advertise and display pricing information but the actual tobacco products would only be visible during a sale or restocking.

Under current federal and state laws, cigarettes must be accessible only to a store's cashiers, and in many city stores they are prominently stacked on a wall behind the cash register.

The proposal would also increase penalties on stores that illegally resell cigarettes smuggled in from states with lower tobacco taxes, which Bloomberg said cost the city $30 million in lost tax revenue every year.

This guy is something.....huh? Is he willing to give up all the money that is made off of Cigarettes? Ready to give up those taxes over cigarettes? He will decide for all New Yorkers.....huh? How can NYers put up with this guy? To top it off they give this POS a 3third term. First Salt in foods, then Sugary Drinks, and Now Cigarettes. What's Next Beer and Alcohols?

Typical republican. More government intrusion in our lives and on businesses

And how do they stop it? Do they monitor your mail? Restrict your web access?

No more sitting around campfires anymore, or car exhaust, or furnace fumes, or smoke from burning food. You don't like the smoke, move somewhere else. Your logic is faulted.

Eventually it will, get enough exposure and it will start to affect your health.

Yeah that's why he describes himself as a Democrat.....this time round. Although I do think someone Pointed out on as to how he has ran under Republican, Independent, and now where he feels more comfortable. In the Tent of the Progressive Democrat.

But that's alright.....he is saying you will like the way he thinks for you. ;)

Dictator of New York? haha...

I love how illogical and downright stupid these authoritarians are.

These clowns never stop to think that their idea of a "utopia" may not be a utopia to others. That maybe we have such a thing called FREEDOM... Did that authoritarian clown Bloomberg ever stop to think that maybe it was FREEDOM that built this country? did he ever stop to think that people came here so they could sell cigarettes or whatever they wanted to because they couldn't back home and make a profit doing it while reaping the rewards of their hard work?

BoomBoom is a ****ing tyrant..... He thinks hes so goddamn smart yet treats the people of New York like children with his proposed laws.

Oh yeah, he also has absolutely no idea about law or liberty considering the court will shoot this proposal down in two seconds (if it even passes) given the fact it violates the First Amendment not to mention numerous bylaws.

Can't say I'm shocked tho.

I'm just waiting for him to start writing legislation on telling them what will make them happy.

If I owned a store in New York I would give you a free gut buster fountain soda with every pack of smokes and call it the BloomTurd Special

Did you just make that up or were you holding onto it for a while?

I really can't stand the tendency of people to make bold claims without backing it up at all.

I don't see how that could possibly be a bold statement. A LOT of smokers die young, in the 50-70 year range. So they have one expensive bout with cancer, then are out for the count. That's 20-40 years they won't be living till they're 90, eating up more social security, medicare, and other services.

The point is, the "we're trying to ban smoking to save money" argument is weak. If we're only speaking financially, we should want old people to die as quickly as possible.

Seems like Bloomberg is on some kind of crusade to control what he doesn't like. The guy is a loose cannon!
