New York Mayor Wants to Ban Stores From Displaying Cigarettes......

Does Canada honor discounts and have coupons for Cigarettes?

Not to my knowledge because advertisement is illegal so coupons and discounts are pointless since you can't distribute them.

Yeah, the coupons and discounts are legal here. Which this would affect that also.

Do you guys have to be a certain age to buy cigarettes? Here it's 19.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday proposed requiring that cigarettes be hidden from view in retail stores as a means to reduce smoking in what he said would be the first law of its kind in the United States.

Bloomberg plans to introduce to the City Council on Wednesday two bills that would require retailers to keep cigarettes in a drawer, behind a curtain or in some other concealed location.

Some retail trade groups and tobacco companies criticized the proposed display ban as an unnecessary burden.

"These laws would protect New Yorkers, especially young and impressionable New Yorkers, from pricing, discounts and exposure to in-store displays that promote tobacco products," Bloomberg told a news conference at a city hospital.

"Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity and they invite young people to experiment with tobacco. This is not a normal activity," he said.

Stores would still be allowed to advertise and display pricing information but the actual tobacco products would only be visible during a sale or restocking.

Under current federal and state laws, cigarettes must be accessible only to a store's cashiers, and in many city stores they are prominently stacked on a wall behind the cash register.

The proposal would also increase penalties on stores that illegally resell cigarettes smuggled in from states with lower tobacco taxes, which Bloomberg said cost the city $30 million in lost tax revenue every year.

This guy is something.....huh? Is he willing to give up all the money that is made off of Cigarettes? Ready to give up those taxes over cigarettes? He will decide for all New Yorkers.....huh? How can NYers put up with this guy? To top it off they give this POS a 3third term. First Salt in foods, then Sugary Drinks, and Now Cigarettes. What's Next Beer and Alcohols?

I am really, really, really getting sick of Bloomberg wanting to shove his beliefs down everyone else's throats. Seriously, why does this guy feel the need to control everything?

Yes.....18 here. But then the article said they had stores where their parents had to be with them in NY. Its not like that around me. But people do look for discounts and a lot in Illinois run over the Border and buy Cigarettes in Indiana.

Well with tobacco it's reasonable because when you smoke you don't only affect yourself like everything else he's banned but everyone around you.

No, because you can smoke in designated smoking areas. They have those at businesses.

Here the only loophole is Indian reserves where they are really cheap.

Those still affect other people, have you ever had to walk past a designated smoking area? Unless it's an airtight locked room (which would kill them) it still affects other people.

Typical Progressive that feels he can think for others. Myself I am tired of him interfering in other States Elections. Just to get one of his stooges in. I don't see how NYorkers voted him in for a 3rd term. Now they are wishing they hadn't.

But you can bet he wouldn't want to lose the money that the State of NY takes in with Cigarettes.

He's a big government Democrat.

I seriously don't think you inhaling cigarette smoke for 2 seconds is going to affect anyone in a serious manner.

No but its it's horribly unpleasant. It is also in society's best interest to reduce the rate of smoking. All the other products do not necessarily cause harm if you moderate consumption while there is no such thing with cigarettes.

So you admit that people smoking doesn't do anything harmful to anyone (besides the smoker of course)?

EDIT: You say that there is no such thing as "moderate consumption" with cigs. That is quite untrue as my mother smokes cigs every once in a while and isn't addicted. I just recently smoked two cigs and before that I hadn't touched any in over a year.

I was referring to just walking by a designated smoking area it doesn't case any harm to you but is incredibly unpleasant and just being around a smoker in general is unpleasant. Addiction to cigarettes is extremely easy you might not be now but it doesn't take much to become addicted, not to mention it's still extremely for you and anyone exposed to second hand smoke. The main point I'm trying to hit here is that its ****ing disgusting and harmful to not only your health but to those affected by second hand smoke.

So what you're saying is that you think its OK to create a stupid policy that will most likely fail because you think something is "disgusting" and you just don't like it?

Its disgusting and it's a public health issue. I can walk anywhere here without having to worry about choking to death on cigarette smoke, my eyes burning, or my lungs being damaged.

Like I said, I seriously doubt any of that is going to seriously affect your health unless you are walking around in massive clouds of cigarette smoke.

Sorry I'm assuming I should be able to walk in a public place without choking and eyes burning because people decide to just light up cigarettes. Reducing cigarette use is a good thing, there is no con to it. Being able to know I can go anywhere I want and know there won't be people smoking.

So you are willing to ignore people's freedom to smoke because you don't like smoking? Am I correct in saying that?

Last time I checked you don't have the freedom to negatively affect other people's health and well being by smoking.

Eventually it will, get enough exposure and it will start to affect your health.

Yeah and you can get them online as well. Not supposed to because it avoids all the federal and state taxes, but they've been unable to stop it.

In universities and some others I've seen it is indeed a closed room with a negative airflow that is ventilated.
