If they had kept quiet they could have claimed it was consensual and probably gotten away with it.
The guys are responsible for their reprehensible actions. They violated that girl and showed little regard for what they did (outside of pleasure or pride). They certainly deserved to be punished.
But I agree with those who say the girl has some level of responsibility for putting herself in a situation where her safety was compromised. She didn't do anything to "deserve" being raped, and her errors in judgment do not lessen the severity of the actions taken by the boys. But she made terrible decisions, compromised her own ability to protect herself, and left herself weak and vulnerable to the nefarious actions of others.
I feel for her in many ways, but being a victim doesn't negate her obligation to protect herself, or excuse her for failing to do so. I hope she's learned from this experience and that with therapy and encouragement she'll find a way to move on from what happened and learn to make better decisions in the future.
