VATICAN CITY — With a puff of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and to the cheers of thousands of rain-soaked faithful, a gathering of Catholic cardinals picked a new pope from among their midst on Wednesday — choosing the cardinal from Argentina, the first South American to ever lead the church.

The new pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (pronounced Ber-GOAL-io), will be called Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. He is also the first non-European leader of the church in more than 1,200 years.

In choosing Francis, 76, who had been the archbishop of Buenos Aires, the cardinals sent a powerful message that the future of the church lies in the global south, home to the bulk of the world’s Catholics.

“I would like to thank you for your embrace,” said the new pope, dressed in white, from the white balcony on St. Peter’s Basilica as thousands cheered joyously below. “My brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am.”

Speaking in Italian as he blessed the faithful, Francis asked the audience to “pray for me, and we’ll see each other soon.”

“Good night, and have a good rest,” he concluded, in a grandfatherly, almost casual tone.

“Habemus papam!” members of the crowd shouted in Latin, waving umbrellas and flags. “We have a pope!” Others cried, “Viva il Papa!”

“It was like waiting for the birth of a baby, only better,” said a Roman man. A child sitting atop his father’s shoulders waved a crucifix.

Francis is known as a humble man who spoke out for the poor and led an austere life in Buenos Aires. He was born to Italian immigrant parents and was raised in the Argentine capital.

Personal Opinion: The first non-European Pope ever... This is a sign of trouble.
I didn't think they would elect a new Pope so soon... I mean, it hasn't even been a month. The conclave sure ended fast... too fast. It seems to me that the haste of which this decision was made is reflected in the candidate they picked. Not to mention that the man is 76. They could have picked a somewhat younger one...

Anyway, for better or worse, this is it. The new Pope is from Argentina and he is taking on the name that suggest that his main concerns will be with poverty, hunger and helping the needy.

I don't see it as trouble, I think it would eventually happen especially given the fact that South America is heavily Catholic.

I think the conclave may have made a decision sooner than anticipated due to them having about a month in advance to discuss things. They knew Pope Benedict was going to resign, he didn't leave being the pope through death as most do

I'm so glad. Tired of all the television coverage. As interesting as watching paint dry.

The vatican shouldn't cater to its fan base. The population has no vote in this regard.

They are supposed to pick the best for the job, the ones who will be the most able, according to their resume, to guide Catholics through the stormy seas that lie ahead.
And the best ones, with the widest support and the most favorable CVs were from Italy. Scolora and Rivesi I think were their names.

I don't know what the instructions the Pope left after he retired... if he left any at all, but this seems too fast... too rushed. Meh, maybe it will be fine.

Did we really need another papal thread?

I wonder why they selected someone so old. ? I don't know what the history is in other papal selections, but choosing someone 76 years old seems strange. Maybe it's their version of term limits.

I've always found it troublesome that the Catholic Church closes Catholic schools in poor neighborhoods rather than support them through the Vatican. Just don't get it. In fact, it would be a wonderful way for the church itself to atone for the failure of church leaders to rat out their pedophiles instead of transferring them from one church to another giving these rotten apples another killing field to harvest.

Have you asked that question with regard to any of the seemingly endless atheist/homosexual threads attacking Christianity?

Yes, actually.

l will be serious in this thread .l used to like pope john paul whose face was innocent enough to make me believe that he was a saint .

They will do none of that. The Catholic church is just like the US military. It picks whoever will best tow the status quo and make no meaningful changes. The new pope is chosen solely because he's useless to everyone except his friends.

Hey, they picked another white guy.

Add the Catholic Church and the papacy to the list of topics about which you know absolutely nothing.

One thing is certain. It will be interesting to see if a pope from South America will bear any resemblence to politicians in South America.

Congatulations you crazy catholics.

I kind of got all pumped up about it like I do for elections here. They only slightly stepped out of Europe to pick a guy who lives in Argentina... but is from Italy... lol

Talk about a half step.

He is a Jesuit, which surprised many observers.

Which may very well explain why he chose "Francis" as his pope name...

In 1534, Ignatius and six other young men, including St. Francis Xavier and Bl. Pierre Favre, gathered and professed vows of poverty, chastity, and later obedience, including a special vow of obedience to the Pope.

I was hoping for someone a bit younger too. I don't think a Pope from a separate continent is a sign of trouble, it makes sense to move in that direction to reach out to and to better connect with larger populations of Catholics with different concerns and needs.

Hopefully Pope Francis will be able to work towards a greater change when it comes to social justice for the poor and needy.

it seems the italian clique in the vatican was something the pope's butler was trying to expose, when he stole papal documents to validate his claims

The first speech from the new Pope!!

Well here's to hoping for him to follow his namesake and being a champion of the poor. I think that would be incredibly awesome. Not to diminish Catholic charities with all their soup kitchens and whatnot... They do a great job with that. But if he takes all that to the next level... mega kudos.

I hope that he will and that his example will inspire other world leaders to do the same.
