An EMP attack on CONUS would cause a crisis the likes of which hasn't been seen in centuries, crippling the US. China might see this as an opportunity to exert the dominance over the Asian-Pacific region that it has long desired.

I'm not saying that is what IS going to happen; I'm saying it is a possibility that should be taken seriously, and a reason not to merely ignore a possible threat from NK.

As to assertions that the US can defend itself from any NK missles, that claim falls a bit flat... defense against cruise missles and short-range missles is one thing, defense against ballistic missles that detonate 200 miles above the surface is an entirely different matter.

EMP. Study it and you'll understand why it worries me, and why one rogue state with one nuke-tipped ICBM could do untold damage to all of North America.
North Korea doesn't even have the capabilities to hit US soil, let alone the technology to deliver an EMP (I have no idea how they could possibly do that). It's more likely we get an EMP from terrorists than the North Koreans. Hell, someone could walk around in downtown NYC (or anywhere) with an EMP and start frying devices.

I view North Korea as a zero threat...

The problem I have with North Korea is not the fact they talk **** but the cult of personality that exists within its boarders. The human rights violations are astounding... I'm not a progressive or bleeding heart either but I do care or pay attention to atrocities like what is happening in NK.

I'm just shocked the entire world turns a blind eye to NK, and the only time the country is relevant is when the present dictator threatens to attack someone.

You need to do a little more research. If they do not have the capability today, this minute, they may well have it soon.

That task gained more urgency after North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Dec. 12 that put a satellite into orbit, after earlier failures. Only a handful of countries have succeeded in independently launching satellites into orbit, with Iran also recently joining the club.
If you can put a satellite in orbit, you can potentially drop a payload on any continent on Earth. While doing so accurately would perhaps be trickier, the first step is the biggest... and again, what if they are actually getting covert tech/material support from China?

I've read like 10+ books on the Korean War, the aftermath, and the rise of the cult of personality with the "Kims."

I'm not concerned by North Korea whatsoever.

As far as EMP's from low orbits.... North Korea cant even deliver a nuke to the US but you actually think they have technology to deliver an EMP from 120,000 feet? I don't even know if we can do that. An EMP from space is not practical (besides the obvious solar flares which is a different animal).

I question North Koreas intent on their alleged satellite as well, however if anything - if it is a weapon, it would probably be biological with its intent to be destroyed on reentry.

I don't worry about that because if its orbit had a decent rate back to reentry of a year or two we probably would have destroyed it by now... Maybe we did, maybe that is why Mr. Un is so pissed and talking crazy?

I agree that North Korea is certainly a potential threat, just not presently.

I would shoot their satellite down if it had a reentry window of less than 20 years. We probably already did that tho.

Who knows what's on that ****ing "satellite" - considering there is limited to no communication via wireless networks in NK the idea they need a "satellite" seems odd. It's certainly not for telecommunications. At the same time they could just be telling people that launch was launching a North Korean to the moon. Regardless I would kill it.

Also I think it was due to when the NKoreas alluded to the issue that they did not need to hit the US. But rather blow off the Nuke in a way Cause a Magnetic Pulse. Which would bring almost everything with electronics to a dead stop. That's if they could get them to detonate over the US.
Putting a rocket into space isn't the same as making it go where you want to. North Korea still hasn't grasped that yet.

    It's a non issue:

The thing about North Korea is that they are basically an outcast to the rest of the world.

They're like that creepy kid in the 4th grade who nobody wanted to talk to. The poor bastard had no friends and he spent all his time alone with nothing else to think about but the fact that nobody liked him and how worthless he was. Year after year of imprisonment by that mindset led him to the realization that having someone, ANYONE, notice him for even a brief second was worth whatever cost the world would impose on him. That's about the point where he got his hands on uncle Buddy's gun and shot seven people at a theater for no good reason.

North Korea, as a society, is the equivalent of the kid I just described.

Nobody should claim that they didn't see this one coming...
