No Jon Stewart... John Oliver is hilarious but it'll be interesting to see how well he can sub in this king of satire show.

Jon Stewart Is Taking the Summer Off to Make a Movie About Iran

Deadline reports that Daily Show host Jon Stewart is taking the summer off to make a movie about an Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, who was imprisoned after appearing in a Daily Show sketch. For eight of his 12 weeks off, Stewart will be replaced by regular John Oliver.

The movie, which Stewart wrote, is based on Bahari's 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family's Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival, about his experiences covering the 2009 Iranian presidential elections, and his subsequent four-month imprisonment—and torture—in Iranian prison on charges of conspiring to launch a revolution. Bahari has been on the Daily Show—initially as a participant in a sketch:

Shortly before his arrest, Mr. Bahari had participated in a "Daily Show" sketch, conducted by one of the show's correspondents, Jason Jones, who was pretending to be a spy. Mr. Bahari's captors used the footage against him.

"You can imagine how upset we were," Mr. Stewart said, "and I struck up a friendship with him afterward."

Mr. Stewart said he eventually read Mr. Bahari's book and "because I'm naïve about the movie business" started to think about a film. He said he did not intend to also adapt the screenplay. "It just kind of happened," he said.

The movie is called Rosewater; Oscar-winner Scott Rudin will produce.

He needs a break from his outbreak of anti-Republican ranting.

I would imagine it is quite a hard job to find new and funny ways to ridicule them considering all the competition they give him making complete fools out of themselves. Was he even on the daily show during the Bush years, or did they just play clips of GWB speaking? I would bail out also since the republican party seems to be killing themselves off. It is not his fault they recycle their jokes like karl Rove and mitt romney. Not to mention the legitimate rape jokes are getting pretty old. How long could this politcal news parody actually last with fox and MSNBC jumping on the bandwagon with entire networks dedicated to doing fake news.

I think John Oliver is funnier than Stewart. And I'm guessing the writers will still be there to help him. I think he'll do well.

That movie sounds a little on the serious side for John Stewart. I hope it works out.

But his anti-Democrat rantings? Those are just fine.

I don't think it's unfair to say that a large majority of Stewart's criticism is directed toward Republicans, and that Stewart is generally anti-Republican. Although, obviously there are exceptions to both of those.

I think Stewart's hilarious, so I'm sorry to see he'll be gone for two months, but John Oliver is great too.

I would bet that in the halls of Fox, they are filled with glee.

A summer vacation from their worst nightmare.

if Jon Stewart is the Republican Party's worst nightmare than they will be just fine.

Sad to say, but Stewart is one of the fairest commentators out there. He's a liberal, and makes no bones about it, but I have seen countless clips bashing Obama on his show. That's why I constantly see his clips pop up on fox nation and such.

BTW, these are only a few that I found, all of them very recent, with evey single one being from February. But of course all he does is pick on Republicans, lol.

I think Colbert is a comedic genius and much funnier than Stewart

The proof is in the people who don't realize he's playing a character

Colbert's schtick is too obvious and always got the feeling people were laughing at him because of his choice of targets and his frantic gestures rather than what the hell he was saying.

Yes, exactly!!

Jon Stewart performs jokes. Colbert, on the other hand, has to not only tell jokes, he has to remain in character.

For me, the thing that really demonstrates the difference in their comedic abilities are the interviews. It's not scripted so they have to come up with funny things to say. The difference is that Stewart can say anything that's funny, while Colbert has to come up with something that is also consistent with his character

I agree. Not much different than Rush actually. It's news based entertainment by an admittedly biased host. Still informative (if you follow up and understand that it is of course biased and adjusted for humor), they are able to bring issues to the forefront and get people to look in to it. As long as people don't accept the show as strictly news it's fine. That said I'll miss his show this summer. I don't think his fill in is nearly as entertaining.

I think he thinks he's playing O'Reilly, ya think?

He has said before that Bill O is a major part of his model, yes. Asked why not Glenn Beck, he said you can't really parody something that crazy.

But his anti-Democrat rantings? Those are just fine.

My wife was a BIG fan of Stewart and we even went to his DC event. I thought his speech there was brilliant, sincere and wished people would have heard it - but they didn't. Everyone just stayed partisan sheeple on both sides.

He came under A LOT of heat from Democrats for not instead ranting at Republicans and it appears he saw the light, regressing to trivial sneering rants at Republicans often with no substance other than just pointless personal redicule.

He's losing his funny and increasingly just becoming a shallow overacting characature of himself. I also think he's became a lazyass and just showing up and going thru whatever staff writers toss in front of him. My wife won't even watch him anymore. And she used to be a very devoted fan at many levels. Again, we travelled cross country just so she could attend his DC event.

Oliver does great segments but I don't see him being that great as host.

Well, I agree that you have to understand where the information is coming from, but to compare Stewart to Rush is silly. The only thing they have in common is that they have shows that talk about politics. That's about it, lol.

really like the commitment he is demonstrating in support of the iranian journalist

also hope Lewis Black sits in for Stewart during his hiatus

I don't like to compare the two being that Jon is a straight-man comedian and Oliver is a color-man comedian. I think they work well together and I'm just curious to see a color-man take the lead role and see what happens.
