Woman Tries Out at N.F.L. Regional Scouting Combine

It hasn't garnered a tremendous amount of media attention but Lauren Silberman may potentially be the Jackie Robinson of her era and gender as she became the first woman to audition at a regional NFL combine. We won't know if she'll play in the NFL until after the draft and it's unlikely that she would be drafted in the first round but this is definitely a historic and exciting day for football and women's rights.

According to your link, she injured herself and is out.

Is she actually the first ever to try out? Seems to me others tried out to be kickers, too, but I may be thinking of college ball.

She kicked the ball 19 yards. I can kick the ball 19 yards. She won't be playing in the NFL, at least not next year.

She left in the middle of the combine but could still be selected if a team liked what they saw.

Unfortunatlely she injured herself and thus failed to demonstrate much of anything. Granted that the primary function of a place kicker is to kick, but it sure helps if they are also able to run some fakes and help tackle/contain the return players. ;)

That was one of my biggest questions with her, as well. Could she be counted on to make any sort of reasonable attempt to tackle a returner? Could she block or catch/throw the ball on a fake. She definitely wouldn't be able to run the ball on a fake. I have no problem with letting her try out. I would on the other hand have a major problem if my beloved Redskins even considered drafting her, regardless of how well her tryout might have gone.

How does this have anything to do with women's rights?

I would accept anyone if they could far outkick other humans (say 85% at 70 yards), but barring that I will agree. ;)

Guess it is up to me on this one.

Seems like she really......

punted that tryout......

Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I think 19 yards it pretty doable, without sitting down your beer, or spilling any. I am kinda a NASCAR fan too and I am so sick of Danica I am about ready to...I dunno, I guess just watch her wreck every week.

lol, no.

She also apparently asked numerous other kickers at the event how they would approach the ball. Clearly she was injured before the actual tryout or this was a publicity stunt.

Christ, there are 8th graders that can kick a ball farther than 19 yards.

I remember reading somewhere that her best kick was 30 yards or so. I think the same article stated that she had never played football.

'Not exactly a major gain in the women's rights movement.

She left a real sport for that? I woman trying out for a craptastic sport and doing a craptastic job at it has nothing to do with women's rights...it's just pathetic.

First Woman Tries Out for NFL, Quits | WREG.com — Memphis News & Weather from WREG Television, News Channel 3

(CNN) The first woman to try out for the NFL dream has been deferred.
Lauren Silberman quit try-outs for the New York and New Jersey Scouting Combine Sunday after two poor kickoff attempts.
The 28-year-old said she aggravated a leg injury she suffered in training last week.
Silberman — whose two kicks went less than 20 yards — has no experience playing football, but she did play soccer in college.
She only started kicking footballs as a hobby a few months ago.

Sounds more like a PR stunt than anything else.

I have not seen her. Is she real good looking?

It's debatable. A lingerie football league uniform would help.

It was so totally blown out of proportion by the media. Women should not be playing in the NFL period and stopping them has nothing to do with discrimination.

Reports are she asked or had to be told what to do.
