The sequester is officially still several days away but the Obama administration is already making the first cuts, with officials confirming that the Homeland Security Department has released several hundred illegal immigrants from detention in order to save money.

The move is proving controversial. Immigrant rights advocates say it shows the administration was detaining folks who never should have been apprehended in the first place, while Republicans said dangerous criminals may be released.

A two percent cut in the federal budget, out of a budget of 3 trillion, means that we can't afford to hold a few hundred more detainees? That we have to release them early, before the cuts go into effect?

What is going on is exactly what Obama wants. Rest assured that all his top appointees have been instructed to cut the most visible services possible. Note that these "cuts" are merely denying some requested increases in funding, we are still spending more than in 2012. This is how Obama plays the game (governs?). Never to be cut are obscure federal programs that have no public impact, instead they must reduce the services most likely to make headlines. The timing is obviously meant to scare the House republicants into submission, showing them that Obama and the MSM will paint them as the villains, by insisting that these specific cuts were mandated by republicants, even though Obama wanted them and publicly stated that he would accept no substitute spending cuts that were not "balanced" by tax increases on "the rich".

That was clearly Obama's plan but it has backfired on him. The mainstream media is calling dems out on that and suddenly it is "Well, it is not an issue of blame...."

What is going on is obama is on a threat tour, in essence he is holding the American people hostage and threatening to unleash holy hell on them if they don't pay up.

Not exactly if "they" (as in all the folks) don't pay up, as he is very specific in who he wishes to extort the additional funds from being exclusively "the rich" (including businesses). What Obama is doing is making his basic class warfare, income redistribution pitch, putting pressure on those that he, and the MSM, portray as for the rich (a minority) and urging all others (the majority) to help him achieve that mission. What goes largely unsaid, in simple terms, is that those "rich folks" (largely the employers) must then transfer funds to the gov't rather than expand their opperations and thus hire more workers.

The problem with income redistribution is that it hinders, rather than helps, economic expansion. The myth that it increases demand for goods and services ignores the fact that for every dollar redistributed a dollar must be taken to redistribute - in other words, it "works" only if the dollar given was borrowed - rather than taken by taxation. Note that "stimulus" is never achieved by taking the money now, via direct taxation (and giving it to someone else), it done is by adding money borrowed (or printed) to make good things happen now, yet at the cost of future taxation to repay the lender (plus interest). That is like saying that you "own" your $150K house now (the day you "bought" it), yet ignoring the fact that you have simply incurred debt (a mortgage), promising to repay $250K over the next 30 years (at 4% ineterest), plus $2.4K per year, in property tax, for that privilege of ownership - you have really just traded $322K to be paid later for a $150K place to live today (or you are renting that house for $922/month - with an ownership interest).

I'd say yes it is!

However with the spineless critters in DC,

If we're scared to cut 85 Billion in PROPOSED INCREASES than we're in a lot of trouble.

The fear mongering coming from the white house is asinine. We are 16 TRILLION in debt. This 85 Billion won't even come into play with the deficit because it only reduces FURTHER SPENDING! It boggles the mind at how people can be so idiotic to believe in all this fear.

The real fear is what happens when we have to pay the bill. We need a spending freeze in this country, a Federal balanced budget Amendment, drastic cuts across the board, and an audit (at the very least) of the Pentagon and The Federal Reserve.

Conservatives before the sequester: "We must cut spending at all costs!"

Now: "Hey you can't cut that! Stupid Obama!"

The sequester was a TP idea, and now that it's happening they're blaming it on Obama. Not surprisingly, there are people who will buy ANYTHING the GOP says. The do-nothing Congress (House and Senate) can't do their freaking jobs, and it's Obama's fault. I guess as long as you don't have to blame Boehner, it doesn't matter. The House has not passed anything to stop the sequester in this Congress. In the last Congress, yes, but not since January. The Senate, while not blameless, can't pass those bills now as they expired with the swearing in of a new Congress.

Seriously, don't release them, DEPORT THEM! Take every single illegal we've established have no legal right to be here and toss them across the border. Problem solved.

The House still holds the purse strings. I recommend Boehner start defunding some of Obama's favorite donors interests.

The reality is, none of the illegals being let go are a public threat, it's a means of scaring the public. When they let Ted Kaczynski or the serial killers go, then I'll pay attention.

Our local HS tried this tactic and everyone reamed them for it, voting out the entire board in the next election. They wanted more money and so they sent letters out to all the parents saying, if the new funding wasn't passed they would have to cut classes. It was a tough time economically for this area so most parents (at least all the ones who continually showed up for the meetings) were okay with shutting down photography classes and some art programs.

The school countered by saying they would cut math classes instead. Assholes.
