Senate Confirms Hagel as Secretary of Defense

I didn't think you would understand. I was right.:2party:

You need to be banned from using "emoticons"..................just saying......................

You bet it was shameful. The Senate vote IMHO should be an up or down vote- 50% plus 1, not filibustered like it was last week.

Ah. So the shame is that the Senate does not agree with your view of what their rules should be.

IMO, Obama picked Hagel because Hagel isn't a stupid saber rattler. I suspect the former Senator lasts a few years.

Why, Bonz? " A picture is worth a thousand words, etc..." :)

It's not just me that disagrees, I remember many Republicans saying "up or down vote" when President Bush had SCOTUS nominees. They should practice what preach.

Then why the current speculation on a possible confrontation with Iran? Will Hagel be the "cool head" here, IYO?

So let's see - you quote a Republican, much disliked by conventional Republicans because he is not really conservative, as the voice of the Republican party that considers him unlike themselves.

Actually, Hagel IS fairly Conservative. His lean is Paleocon, though, as opposed to Neocon. Many Paleocons were very much against the war in Iraq.

That's not shameful; that's tradition.

wow 4 members of the party of NO actually broke ranks? Now THAT is breaking news. Seriously.....the fact that Republicans hate Obama so much that they won't even vote for one of their own is just astounding and screams volumes.

I tended to always like Hagel, but calling him "one of their own" is hugely misleading. Hagel has been at odds with the majority of republicans since he has started serving

The Senate has been making their own rules since 1789. I think that qualifies.

Your mind is expanding. You acknowledge the world existed before this morning........................

The guy might be nice and dedicated as well, but he is an idiot...

McCain had him all wrong then I suppose...

In 2006, while he was preparing to run for president, McCain was asked whether he’d consider Hagel for a cabinet post. “I’d be honored to have Chuck with me in any capacity,” he said. “He’d make a great secretary of state.

linkypoo...

Unless appointed by Obama of course.

Everyone with any sense knew that Hagel would be confirmed.

Even the G-nO-P had to know that it couldn't stop this.

So my question is: What, if anything, did the G-nO-P accomplish with its wrongheaded delay of Hagel's confirmation?

Is Hagel the best person for the Job? No, but he's the guy that Obama picked and he's definitely qualified for the job.

Just like Romney was the guy that the GOP picked. Tell me that the GOP couldn't find a better person than Romney.

If the GOP ever puts someone in the White House again, it might get a little taste of its own obstructionist medicine.

"What goes around, comes around."

Most of Hagel's service in the Senate was before I started paying attention to politics, but from what I see here, he seems to be pretty solidly conservative everywhere but on foreign policy.

You might be making the easy mistake of confusing a conservative position with the republican one

What I meant was his positions aside from foreign policy, did not seem too far off from his Republican colleagues you said he butted heads with.

Liberal and Conservative are pretty much connotations for Republican and Democrat now anyway.

I told ya they would approve him.....even Rand Paul voted for him. As Repubs think that Obama should have who he picks as his team. They did try and get him to take back the Nomination. But all knew Obama wouldn't do so.

Either way this contention over him.....has already damaged him beyond repair, and that will be with the Rest of the World. With our Allies and Enemies. As all know now that most Americans Don't trust Hagel and have no confidence in him. He will in effect be a Weak SOS and he will be tied to Obama. Obama being the one to choose the incompetence. Like he did with Hillary and Rice, Panetta and Dempsey. All his Picks.....all weak, like himself!

Just out of curiosity, what where the vote count for Bush nominations? Where the opposition to some of them different somehow?

The Democrats did not unilaterally oppose every Bush nominee and everything that Bush attempted to do. In fact, that was the problem with many of the Democrats....they were so afraid of their own shadows that they caved to Bush on everything.

Then why the current speculation on a possible confrontation with Iran? Will Hagel be the "cool head" here, IYO?

We've been at "war" with Iran since Stuxnet, IMO. I'm pretty sure Obama, Hagel and Kerry will do all they can to avoid a hot war with that crazy country.

I have a Senate confirmation hearing to backup my claim. What do you have?

You have a Senate confirmation hearing where you are being called an idiot?
