Papal resignation linked to inquiry into 'Vatican gay officials', says paper

Looks like there was more to the pope resigning than his poor health. There seems to be a scandal after all: a network of gay clergy, blackmail, theft...juicy stuff.

A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom the report said were being blackmailed by outsiders.

Same old, same old. I think I read a quote by Matthew Fox that said a monk should "carry a backpack, not a basilica." Spirituality, not religion, the message. I think it means the collection baskets are suffering and an upper management shuffle is the "Corporate" cure. After all, someone has to manage all that bling, eh?

I have read reports that he has been in poor health, has had secret surgeries, and apparently is just fed up with the boggled church administration that is just unnecessarily sucking the life out of him. This probably goes toward the latter.

Imagine how much good the Church could do for the poor with all that wealth if it really stood for helping the poor.

You've hit the nail upon the head. That is the separation between "religion" and "spirituality."

the butler insisted he was trying to expose internal wrongdoing by releasing the confidential papal documents
said he was trying to help the pope, who seemed unaware of what wrongdoing was being committed in the pope's name

At its core, the belief of the Catholic Church is to have people deny a basic component of what it means to be human - sex. That is why so many of these scandals center around that reality.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

There's a saying, I can't remember the import, but they say "A religious person is someone who doesn't want to go to hell. A spiritual person is someone who has been to hell and doesn't want to go back".

    Always liked that one...
