New study raises questions about religion as deterrent against criminal behaviour

Hmmmm...Funny this part of the article....

"hardcore criminals often co-opt religious doctrine to justify or further their crimes."

reminds me of Black Liberation Theology.....I wonder why that is.....?

There's a fairly obvious explanation. Religion has been watered down more and more over the course of my life. Authority has been ceded from the pastoral staff to the parishoners. The flock calls the shots and they each have their own flavour on religious teachings. The churches respond by stretching their principles, taking the edge off their teachings.

More and more folks are rolling their own where it comes to religion. One from column A, two from column B.

Just out of curiousity, what industry would that be that employs many gays?

Hospitality and tourism.

I worked in Germany, Australia, Canada and New Zealand as a waiter and bartender in several restaurants, bars and hotels and as a bouncer in a Gay bar in Melbourne. The problem in the Gay bar, oddly to me, was not the outsiders who came to beat on them but the Gays who, because they were Gay, often felt the need after a couple of drinks to prove their manliness. I was young. I needed the money.

Earth to Dezaad: Homosexuals have been attacking Christianity for the past thirty years. Those attacks are a virtual full time staple of this forum and all others.

And Christianity has been murdering and torturing homosexuals for the past couple thousand years. Until roving gangs of gays are lynching Christians in the street, I don't think there's anything to complain about. The "attacks" that have you so upset are nothing more than what goes around coming around. And lucky for you, gays in the 21st century are a lot more civilized than Christians of past centuries.

Where are all these Gays lynching Christians? Are Gay Muslims doing that?

Well, by the same logic, I could say "Christians have been attacking gays for the past 2000 years". I could say "Christian's creativity in devising ways to hate seems to show no bounds..." and so forth, right? Of course, I would be well within my rights to do so, by your exact same logic. So, unless you are going to say about the gander what you are saying about the goose, then I suggest you get a little perspective, and quit speaking from ignorance.

The fact is that gay people embrace the idea of God more than I myself think is good for them. Religion does in fact become a weapon in the hands of hateful people, and there are a lot of hateful people out there, ready to forge such weapons anew. Gay people should attack the notion of faith and religion, not because all religious people are bad, but because faith and religion are so incredibly easily manipulated by bad people. But, only a minority of them do, unfortunately. And really only because that minority is already inclined to be atheist, like me, and many atheists do see faith and religion in this light. I will note with emphasis, however, that I am not saying "Christians are _________" or "Christians do _________" here.

So, yes, there are people out there who do something which approximates your accusation (I am probably one of them), but it is not gays in general.
