After 148 years, Mississippi finally ratifies 13th Amendment, which banned slavery

After watching the film, which depicts the political fight to pass the 13th Amendment, Batra did some research. He learned that the amendment was ratified after three-fourths of the states backed it in December 1865. Four remaining states all eventually ratified the amendment -- except for Mississippi. Mississippi voted to ratify the amendment in 1995 but failed to make it official by notifying the U.S. Archivist.

Waiting until 1995 was funny enough but 2013 made my day. Way too funny.

Re: Mississippi just got around to ratifying the 13th Amendment.

There was also a state... Louisiana I think, where inter-racial marriage was banned according to their constitution... which was first removed barely a few years ago in a referendum... the change only squeaked by.. wtf?

Our own federal government doesn't even acknowledge the Bill of Rights, yet this should shock people?

As a LIbertarian, you don't believe in the Federal Government anyway, so why do you care?

I presume the point is that Mississippi is culturally backwards.

This has nothing to do with the federal government. This is a Tenth Amendment issue.

    Geez....

But Isn't the 10th amendment from the same constitution as the 13th?

It would be much better if they still had it then?

It's interesting that they never ratified it before.

    No.

How could the Tenth Amendment and Thirteenth Amendment possibly be the same?
