Re: Iceland wants to ban Internet porn

I don't get it. If this is about children, how hard is it for parents to monitor their children's internet usage by installing software to filter certain kinds of content? Why is the government taking on this duty? Seems like a moral agenda to me, and one that takes away responsibility from the individual.

I understand the sentiment but I can't support internet censorship in any form. Once the mechanism to do it is in place it can be expanded to include other material, as Australia has been doing after it used child porn as the emotional trigger to get the public to agree.

Not that internet censorship even works. I'm sure a lot of Icelanders will switch to using proxy web browsing after this. Point is, the government should not have this power.

The problem is that the idea of internet censorship is spreading because of Iceland's initiative:
UK 'will follow Iceland's lead over ban on internet porn' | Culture | The Observer

People blame China for being fascist but a lot of democracies are following suit with their approach to the internet. They're just introducing it under the guise of other things, so that people will give up the freedom to fight "the bad guys". Typical.

Never happened in Australia. The government gave up after the public backlash.

I agree that the responsible parties should be the parents. I don't know too many kids that buy their own computers, Internet providers, etc. Surely they have commercial filters similar to what we have.

Shocking to me that this would be happening in Iceland, of all places. But but surprising. I have friends there, and they were predicting even greater unpleasantness, for quite some time. Strip clubs had been outlawed already. The Socialist Democratic Alliance of Ms. Sigurđardóttir is a left-authoritarian group that wasted no opporutinities in capitalizating on the liberal (in the normal sense) Progressives mishandling the banking crisis badly.

Of course, it's never just "social issues". In the Heritage's ranking of economic freedom, it is # 27 in 2012. Back in 2005, it was #10.

    Wow.... censorship...for the children.

I wonder where they stand on violence? Movies, video games, tv shows...????
Iceland is a village of some 300,000 people... (with some of the hottest women in the world).

    Would be an interesting experiment.

Iceland had a ban on beer until not too many years ago. A buddy of mine from Reykjavik told me some 25-years ago that "they weren't civilized enough to drink beer." They legalized low alcohol beer for a while back then, but the population spiked it with vodka... then it was banned again. The fisherman made great cash smuggling beer. I don't think they'll be able to make any coin on the porn end... but you never know with those crafty fishermen

People still get thrown in prison periodically for selling porn in the USA, although not so much with Democrat presidents. Max Hardcore (Paul Little) is probably still in prison, they almost got John Buttman Stagliano, but the charges eventually got dropped.

Who do you trust to decide what you can watch? What about news and exposes of war crimes and other types of violence , would you ban those?

Iceland can do what they want. I have no objections to them banning porn.

Re: Iceland wants to ban Internet porn

I was one of the plaintiffs in the SCOTUS ruling on the Helms Amendment. The results was a mixed message. Indecency is covered by the first amendment. Obscenity is not. What is obscentity? We don't know but we'll know it when we see it...good grief©

So, in the porn industry, there are fine lines. S&M is dangerous, scatology is dangerous, bestiality is dangerous. So, porn producers must walk a fine line. Of course, there are those brave enough to produce "obscene" porn sold under the counter. A risky business. I'm told that porn outsells Hollywood by 5 to 1 (anecdotal).
