Not good not good NOT GOOOD! Time to PANIC!!! :scared::scared::scared:

MOSCOW -- A meteor streaked across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and reportedly injuring around 100 people, including many hurt by broken glass.
Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions.
Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.

...The asteroid, DA14, discovered by astronomers at LaSagra Observatory in Spain, is estimated to come near enough to Earth on February 15, 2013, that it could disrupt geosynchronous satellites....

Huge asteroid to veer earth, may destroy satellites

...There has been so much buzz about a small asteroid nearly missing the Earth on February 15th. Though there is not going to be any collision, it has been said that such events are quite commonly happening about every few centuries or so.

It has been said that the asteroid 212 DA14, which is reported to be about 150 feet in diameter, would cross the earth's orbit twice a year. It is most likely to pass through at altitude of 17,000 miles of the earth at 2:24 p. m. Eastern Time on Friday....

Small Asteroid to Closely Miss Earth on Feb 15

..."We are going to be looking closely for evidence of seismic activity on 2014 DA14 as it passes by," says Binzel. "This is the first case of an object coming close enough to experience quakes AND where we have enough notice to plan observations."...
Possible Seismic Activity on Asteroid 2012 DA14

Looks like this object is still on its way in.
Here is the orbit element thingy from NASA:

Things that make you go hmmm.

UPDATE: They changed the title to: METEORITE STRIKES, 'MORE THAN 400 INJURED' on the Huff Post front page

I think the last thing we should do is panic. That solves nothing.

Are any of the meteorites expected to fall on this side of the planet? Any to enter US Air Space? Any word on if they have taken out any satellites?

500 now reported. There is also video.

This is just like meteorites. Going around the solar system, having no respect for borders or cultural differences. They think they an just strike with impunity wherever they want and nobody will do anything about it. Well I tell you what. People are getting fed up with this, and it's only going to create more animosity towards meteorites in the future.

It would have been interesting if it hit a populated city. The Russian military would have asked to counterstrike at us.

Meh. Had it hit us, 'Pubs would have shrieked that Obama hadn't called it a terrorist attack within 30 seconds of the strike.

Could you imagine seeing this as you drive down the road?

Wow - 32 hospitalized. I guess the early-warning detection system didn't see it coming?

Isn't it a little late, though - 2012 was LAST YEAR.

Could you imagine seeing this as you drive down the road?

LOL
"Nothing to see here, folks . . . just a pocket of swamp gas... :?"

My question is will we get hit again? With the asteroid passing I am guessing we will have a lot of meteors due to gravity. I'm curious how many would be this size or larger.

strike.

Not after the idiots blamed Bush.

Maybe this is why Obama's bankrupting America and paying his buddies off.

Or vowing to work continuosly round the clock on the economy but instead takes 60 vacations.

Because there is no year 2014

Quick, somebody call Bruce Willis!

well we obviously need to form a committee to find out who is to blame and fine the dickens out of them...then create a meteor tax, enforce meteor regulations....and ultimitly ban meteors

Can't we compromise on background checks for meteor orbits?

space hates Russia. i hope that no one was killed.

as for the 150 foot asteroid, it's predicted to pass over the Indian Ocean.

I understand this thing entered the earth's atmosphere at over 30,000 miles per hour. Converted to kilometers per hour, that's 500 billion kilometers per hour, which sounds a lot more scary. Had this thing been equipped with a full metal jacket, it might have punched a hole clean through the planet. Geeze. Damn that NRA.
