Senate Republicans block Hagel nomination after Democrats force vote

How is Hagel "their own guy"? You really should develop the ability to think and speak for yourself or you'll be lost when Obama's term is over.

Agreed. Hagel is as Republican as Charlie Crist. Actually, I would prefer that Hagel not be confirmed. I agree with Mike Huckabee that Hagel's performance at his confirmation hearing was the most embarassing public performance since Roseanne Barr tried to sing the national anthem.

Well, they're filibustering their own guy...Funny thing is, the next nominee is not likely to be someone they like any better.[/QUOTE]

I like Hagel, but the Senate rules do allow filibusters.
I just wish the rules required the dissident Senator(s) to actually hold the floor for hours or days at a time.
If Jimmy Stewart could do it in a movie, I'll bet our current crop of pols can do it, too.
On second thought, our elected officials are probably too busy fund-raising to make such an effort.

He's not "our own guy" . He's a shill for Obama so that when he guts defense he can blame it on a Republican and call it "bipartisan".

Hagels a foolish old man.

The GOP is nihilistic. Reed should take the leadership aside, slap them around and tell them if they continue to act like babies, Democrats will vow to block every nomination of every nominee ever proposed by a future GOP president.

Though that may not be much of a threat since it's unlikely the moribund and pathological GOP will ever win a presidential election again.

Seems this is political grandstanding by both parties. The Democrats force an early vote before Presidents after the GOP said they would be willing to have the vote after the break. The Republicans filibuster the nomination which they said they would have a vote on. I think both parties are guilty in trying to score political points instead of trying to do what is good and right for our country. This shouldn't surprise anyone, both parties putting their party above country has become common place.

No equivalency. The GOP Senators are trying to block an eminently qualified man. That's actually contrary to their power. They should be removed from office and new elections held to put in grown ups who follow the Constitution.

Perhaps in your view, but why not wait until after the break and then have the vote as the GOP said they would allow. Then you well qualified candidate would be confirmed, probably along a party line vote. Actually Article II Section 3 does give the senate that power, the power of advice and consent.

Well he is a Republican.

(BTW, I didn't even vote for Obama. Nice try though. Next time try harder.)

So we should spend, spend, spend! As long as it's on guns, it's fine.

Do you even follow politics? The Repubs have already stated that they'll be ready to proceed when they return from break. This was nothing more than a protest vote...

So a silly political stunt, then? At least we know...

Sacrificing military readiness is OK if you're making a political point. First with the budget, now preventing the National Security team of the administration from assuming its duties. Good job GOP.

So were you asleep for the previous administration?

No one except a moron is going to blame the SecDef for Congressional spending cuts, the fact that people think this conspiracy exists shows how little they know about government.

Just like the State of the Union Address.

Just when I think you couldn't possibly come up with something more ignorant than your usual crap, you drop this gem. :lamo

He may be an Obama Republican - if you don't understand the reasons why Obama chose him as his Secretary of Defense and you simply parrot the Obama/White House/Democrat line that Republicans should confirm Hagel because he's a Republican then, yes, you'll be lost when Obama's term in office ends - you'll need someone else to tell you what to think.

Only a moron wouldn't see the politics that Obama is playing here, putting a phoney Republican in charge of DoD.

I don't think that they necessarily should confirm him. I simply find it ironic that Republican Senators are filibustering a Republican former Senator.

If he does step aside, which I'm sure would make some people very happy, think about who Obama is going to nominate next. Think the TP's going to go for him?

The State of the Union speech has been, and always will be, the Pro Bowl of politics.

Just like the State of the Union Address.

The State of the Union is a Constitutional requirement. It does not have to be delivered in person, but the President is required to give some kind of "message" to Congress.

Truthfully, it has basically evolved into a stunt for television. It's not like that's new, though.

Had he not died, Arlen Specter would have been Obama's first choice.

The republicans should stop putting their party desires over the good of the American people and confirm the nomination of a guy simply because he was a member of their party.
