Pope resigns

I'm sad to admit that I think the same thing. Benedict has become something of a posterboy for the pedophile priest scandals of the 70's and 80's, and having a pope who is untainted by that legacy would be a good thing for the church.

Even if that's the idea, I doubt this is what he is resigning over.

The "point" and/or "meaning" of religious garb is not readily apparent to me.............................

Hopefully the next pope will have a less "raping kids is okay" position with regard to his priests.

The current pope never had a "raping kids is okay" position. The incidents were terribly mishandled, no doubt, but the church and Ratzinger specifically never said that pedophilia was acceptable.

Bring on the last Pope. I guess, according to prophesy, the next Pope will be the last.

That would be nice, since all of this absurd end-of-the-world nonsense is bunk, let's just bring on the last one and get rid of that absurd monstrosity that is the Catholic Church.

I'm pretty sure this Pope resigned because his views were turning off not only potentially new followers but current ones. His comments on the child abuse scandal in particular were quite disgusting. Given that he is the first Pope to resign in 600 years, I doubt this is about health. Catholicism is very big on taking your duties to your grave.

Kind of interesting that someone can resign from their superhuman role as God's representative on earth. So much for the Divine Right of Kings.

I hope the next Pope is more progressive, or at least capable of smiling once in a while.

The funny thing is, this announcement comes on the same weekend that the Catholic Church is trying to figure out why it doesn't appeal to young people anymore. However, instead of admitting that it's their ridiculous beliefs that turn rational people off, they think that if they pretty it up and add rock music, young people will come in droves. Maybe Benedict has decided he doesn't want to go down with a sinking ship.

Yes, that awful organization that gave us the university system, hospitals, and tremendous works of charity. This world would be so much better without those things.

Funny how there was no crisis with young people until the Mass was changed to appeal to that demographic rather than staying consistent with its celebration as it had for more than a thousand years.

The same could be said of Islam. Maybe it's a case of both trying to mitigate the manmade disasters that ensued when they "took over" ?....................

The Episcopalian Church is just about dead. They're either leaving the faith or becoming Catholic.

Then half of them are making the right choice.

All of which started as religious organizations and only got worthwhile when they were taken away from religion and allowed to progress in a secular society. Otherwise, universities would just be places to copy the Bible by hand.

And here we see a classic example of the correlation fallacy. Correlation does not mean causation. Just because two events happen in close proximity to each other does not mean one caused the other. A more likely reason young people are staying away from organized religion in droves (33% of people between 18-28 report being non-religious) is because religion in general, and perhaps Catholicism in particular, is fricking stupid.

It's all about separating them from the plebes, they can wear that stuff and you can't.

You start off with attempting to expose a fallacy only to employ hyperbole in return. Congratulations.

Catholics have a process called beautification, that handles all of those flaws.

Beatification (no "u") is a designation for someone who the church believes has acheived heaven and can intercede with God on behalf of living people. It is an interim step on the path to sainthood.

Beatification changes nothing about a person.

Truth is truth whether you like it or not.

You don't honestly see that as true ... do you?

I'm not a Catholic, it's outside my belief system. But I do know it's a prophecy many of the faithful have been aware of, well, since the 1600s. The Church denies it, calls it divination, yet it was prophesized by one of their saints.

Well that's Catholic logic for ya ;)

I think I read it reported that only Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI got past 80. .

Leo XIII, one the more impressive figures in that position, was 93 when he died in 1903. And there were a few more.

On the other hand, cardinals cannot join the Conclave (the body that electes the Pope) after 80.

And I can say that since most people believe in a deity, this is because atheism is "frickin stupid."

Still sounds silly, doesn't it?
