Pope resigns

Anyone who's a Catholic or has followed the Catholic Church and its leadership knows that current social standards and mores have little impact on them - they are so buried in two millenia ago, not just one, and they are more concerned with bending people to their will than making even the slightest changes to their way of thinking.

You don't think seeing the church patrons question the faith doesn't put pressure on the leadership? Are they gaining more or less by bending people and staying so far in the past that they make little sense in today's society? I think the Pope has been disgusted by what he see's in the Media and has expressed that openly and probably feels more like a figurehead than an actual force. It's only an opinion.

The Catholic Church, as an institution, preys on ignorance. It is expanding in Latin America, South America, and Africa while losing ground in the US, Canada, and Europe. There is still ample ignorance in this world for the Church to feed off of - but there may come a time when they feel pressure - just not now.

Don't expect its brand of conservatism to vanish. I made my peace with that. The most important part is to realign itself after a lengthy scandal. An effective spokesperson would be nice, but also one who is willing to take on the management crisis.

I have little faith (pun intended) but I can always hope.

I won't be holding my breath though.

There's many liberal Catholics, but the Catholic church needs to think about the Catholic Church. I respect that conceptualization of power immensely.

As long as Christ is not resigning, I think we'll be okay.

I have great difficulty respecting much of anything about an organization that won't accept birth control, and will actively speak out against it's use in this day and age.

Then throw in the whole protect the pedophile priest thing and I'm completely out the door ....

Don't know how you can see it that way. Most liberals are for birth control and the Roman Catholic Church is against that.
It's the facts... look it up.

Think about it... the only Catholic President-democrat
The current Catholic Vice President-democrat

Catholics vote democrat and most are Liberal. The only issue that sway the votes at all in the most of the catholic community is the Abortion/birth control deal.

If it were not for that EVEN MORE Catholics would vote democrat.

Also... Jews are on the left, and they believe a lot of the social policies too, but they vote democrat and are liberal in the grand scheme of things.

the trend is starting to level out a little(Like a growing number of southern Catholics voting republican), but still Catholics are liberals by a majority and have been traditionally for decades.

On the former, there's some Christian sects that tolerate if not promote birth control options. Go seek them. However, there's a great many religions (including the more populated ones) which are not in favor of birth control.

On the latter, absolutely this is an issue, one that I hope is rectified.

Bring on the last Pope. I guess, according to prophesy, the next Pope will be the last.

I hear it's a combo of Notre Dame getting spanked by Alabama in the national championship game and Manti Teo being catfished.

Long live the Emperor.

Are we ready for a black African Pope? The bookies have Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, from Nigeria ahead.

the bookies taking bets on the Pope just dont seem right to me.

Doubt it. There will be an Irish pope before that, then American. And I don't think there will ever be an Irish or American Pope.

I'm betting on a return to Italians.

I'm pretty sure this Pope resigned because his views were turning off not only potentially new followers but current ones. His comments on the child abuse scandal in particular were quite disgusting. Given that he is the first Pope to resign in 600 years, I doubt this is about health. Catholicism is very big on taking your duties to your grave.

Kind of interesting that someone can resign from their superhuman role as God's representative on earth. So much for the Divine Right of Kings.

I hope the next Pope is more progressive, or at least capable of smiling once in a while.

Forgive me if I don't see the joke here but .... what?

I lol'd.

Don't forget about the Gelgameks, either!

There is absolutely no evidence supporting that claim.

I'm betting he has some sort of debilitating decease (another poster said maybe Alzheimer) that would keep him from being an effective leader.

You can't be serious. There is a ton of evidence. Watch the documentary.

We can only assume the reason since we don't know the facts.

This is true. The facts of the documentary may have nothing to do with his resignation. Although, they do give plenty of reason he should resign, it can't be determined this is the reason. We will probably never know.

Oh well. Next!

A rather wise decision given the admitted frailties of the man.

It is sad that the Catholic Church long ago gave up and claim to moral righteousness or good. As such, it has no claim to lead anyone or tell people how to live their lives. It is really sad.

Wow, I didn't even know a Pope could resign.
Neither did I.

I always thought that once you were the Pope you remained being the Pope until you died.
