You're also forgetting the draw of Christianity for African Americans, who started learning the "wrong lessons" from the Bible about slavery. That book was a double-edged sword.

On the contrary. It can be quite dangerous to slave owners, hence why you saw waves of either not wanting slaves to be given to Christianity, or have the message of it controlled and isolated from other preachers who were being seen as promoting slave awareness of equality before God, Moses' call to freedom from slavery, and so forth. In one instance, going back to Denmark Vesey, in the immediate aftermath, you could see the intellectual ripple-effect occurring. Throughout the press in the country, there was renewed concern over Christianity's impact on slaves and free blacks. South Carolina pushed out dissenting African Christian Churches in favor of their own, because to tolerate anything else meant possible further instances of rebellion.

It is indeed a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you got slave owners literally beating Christianity into their black slaves, which is one reason why Christianity has such a hold on the black community in the United States, and on the other hand, you have Christian missionaries going to Africa to convert the masses away from those other evil religions, but not all that successfully, which is where you get Christians in places like Nigeria killing albinos to harvest their organs for religious rituals.

Yeah, Christianity has done such good in the world.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

You're underestimating the drive of African Americans themselves to Christianity historically. In the attempt to trash the religion, you have removed agency from the blacks themselves.

The whole idea of "God will take care of us if we just believe hard enough" has done plenty of damage to black culture, but what liberals have done is much worse. If these people were told from birth that they are personally responsible for their own success and if they fail, they bear at least part of the blame, the black community would never be in the mess it's in today.

You hate religion so much that you're willing to blame African Americans for their condition?

Not sure where the two coincide. Everyone is personally responsible for their situation in life to a very large degree. There are a lot of elements in the black community that include religion, but certainly is not limited to it, where they have done harm to themselves of their own volition. There are also some external factors that we, as a society, need to work to correct.

    You thought differently?

Yeah, I thought differently. Christianity became a pillar of the African Americans during their horrible existence in slavery and Reconstruction, and became the backbone of the Civil Rights Movement.

Well, during slavery, Christianity was largely forced upon black slaves by their owners who made them reject the religious beliefs that they brought with them from Africa. It was "you can't believe that anymore, you have to believe this!" As any good apologist will tell you, give them a child for the first seven years and they can almost guarantee their beliefs for life. A couple of generations of forced Christian indoctrination will do wonders and will stick around for decades once embedded in the culture.
