February 7, 2013 - For the first time, a majority of the public says that the federal government threatens their personal rights and freedoms, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.

The nationwide telephone survey found that 53 percent of Americans think that the federal government threatens their own personal rights and freedoms while 43 percent disagree. Of those who say government is a threat, 31 percent say it is major threat, while 22 percent say it a minor threat. Fully three-quarters (76 percent) of conservative Republicans said that the government threatens their personal rights, and most (54 percent) said the government poses a major threat, by far the highest percentage of any ideological group identified. Even among moderate and liberal Republicans, 57 percent view the federal government as a threat to personal rights and freedoms and 32 percent said it is a major threat. Among Democrats, 38 percent said the government is a threat, just 16 percent said it as a major threat. According to Pew, the survey also found “continued widespread distrust in government.”

“Such widespread alarm about federal encroachment indicates there is absolutely a bipartisan, across-the-board concern about the assault on Americans’ personal freedoms, choices and ability to raise families on their own terms,” LeBon said.

“Whether it is ObamaCare, the Second Amendment or the constant barrage of ‘nanny state’ regulations at all levels of government, Americans are speaking up about feeling threatened by institutional intrusion,” she said.

“This intrusion is all around,” she added.

The Pew survey was conducted Jan. 9-13 among a national sample of 1,502 adults, with a confidence factor of 95 percent.....snip~

Do you think Obama and the Democrats have something to worry about? The poll show there is a bi-partisianship as it crossing lines. Also Team Obama keeps dropping in the Polls and is continuing to take hits over the Drone Issue and now after the Devastating Admissions by Panetta and Dempsey implicating Clinton and her state Dept for screwing up Benghazi.

Can Obama make it thru this 2nd term by constantly looking ro go around Congress? Do you think that Obama's spin machine can hide the fact that more and more Americans are becoming disillusioned with all Obama has to say? Seems Obama is now starting to lose that popularity wave he has been riding. How do you think this will affect the political landscape going forward?

More right wing blogoshpere gooberment bad drivel.

Some ridiculously high percentage of Americans has disapproved of congress for the last decade-and-a-half - yet the same people keep getting voted into office every election cycle.

Do politicians have anything to fear????? Hell no.....status quo as it were.

I'll say all the press the unconstitutional drone attacks have received does surprise me. It seems people actually care that their rights are being trampled. Even more amazing is seeing Dem's willing to stand up to the Obama administration. Bravo to them

Yeah 38% of Democrats worrying about their Rights and Freedoms kind of puts that in perspective. With more and More people being concerned. Drone attacks and NDAA have brought it all to their forefront of their minds.

Cherylyn Harley LeBon of Project 21 National Black Leadership Network said the alienation of conservatives may be fueling the latest numbers, but public distrust in government has been growing across-the-board.....snip~

Yeah we can tell how Influential that the Black Conservative Group is all across the Country.....huh?

Would the Numbers from the Pew site looked any different? Do you think Huffpo and Politico giving out the same numbers would then mean some sort of relevancy so that the left leaning has real comprehension?

Do you think Cities Like New York, Chicago, States Like California and Illinois all getting in the News citing they are passing the Strictest Gun Laws in the Country is part of this?

What about NY putting a Salt Ban on all restaurants? What about those 160 rules Obama passed down with Children's Nutrition and Michelle's program which she has walked away from?

The reason I bring these up are that they do not stem from Right leaning sources and or complaints. Do you think more numbers now are making the difference?

I've viewed the federal government as my enemy for over 40 years. Glad others are finally figuring it out. The main impediment to the American way of life I love is the U.S. Congress. We voters should be ashamed of ourselves for letting it become what it is. We deserve what we get, I'm sorry to say.

I think, most people, as I do as well, believe that it is a necessary evil. Unfortunately, in today's world, shady politicians are what a country needs to have to "get business done". If you are afraid to bend the rules and break one or two here and there, your going to get left in the dust by the other hundred countries that are more than willing to do this.

I love hearing from folks who watch and read nothing but left wing national scribes who worship at the feet of POTUS.

I too share this concern, for no one else is threatening my rights... Our society now views the necessity of a warrant and due process as passé... You can be held without trial or killed, your rights don't exist. The DoJ openly considers a "potential terrorist" anyone who has more than 7 days of food, owning several guns and "too much" ammo, has weatherproofed (aka buried) guns/ammo, and someone "overly concerned" about their rights.

In a Democracy like ours, with a "Government of the People" to feel so threatened is to fear the positions of a significant percentage of one's countrymen (or their electorate.) Our rights are precisely the things we cannot legally vote away, yet many fear the attempt and abhor successful previous attempts by our "leaders" and "countrymen." If the new anti-2nd amendment state laws that recently passed are any indication, I do not believe the demagogues, heeding Rahm Emanuel's advice about never letting a serious crisis go to waste, will stop scaring the people out of wanting a free country. I do not believe the haymarkets of the country will cease their "reasonable" attacks on our rights "for the children" or "safety" or to save lives. We gave up too many lives to secure our freedoms, you do not betray such noble efforts by giving up said rights "if only one life could be saved."

Such a political trend seldom ends well... I'm hoping for a political backlash like after the 1994 AWB that is in equal in proportion to these go for broke attempts that I have grown tired of hearing that "nobody is suggesting" then "will never pass" then "well thats NY, CA, IL... you don't live there so why do you care?" And when I say equal in proportion, I mean ten fold. So much so to make Bill Clinton's warning to Democrats about overreaching on the 2A to seem prophetic.

This is the biggest problem. Nearly everyone says that Congress is doing a poor job, yet nearly everyone says that their Congressperson is doing a great job. Nothing will ever change like that.

What's disturbing here isn't that you blame Obama for this.

What's disturbing is that you'd think the Republicans would do any differently.

That's because the House is composed of single-member districts gerrymandered by state legislatures.

Lets get rid of that and instead use a party proportional system within the states.

That way we can get true representation of the population - especially by including multiple parties.

Considering that these "types" are the ones behind most terror attacks on US soil since 9/11... then do you blame them?

What is disturbing is how the Republicans and their backers had no problems with the Patriot Act back in the day, and actually wanted more... and now that it is a Democratic President using the very same law... then all of a sudden it is a massive problem... Talk about being hypocritical.

Yeah, no one on the right spoke out against these things at the time

It had nothing to do with a phase of nationalism that accepted the notion of "if you're not with us you're with the terrorists."

You care to list these terror attacks that preppers/gun owners concerned about their rights carried out in the US since 9/11?

Because I am truly ignorant of them.

What is disturbing here is you only want to blame Republicans.

No, it doesn't have to be this way. The congress was designed to be inhabited by honest people. We have allowed dishonest people to come to it and to stay there as a "necessary evil." Everything the congress does is for the power and control of its members. Nothing they do has anything to do with the common good.

As an example, no intelligent, educated person can believe that spending so much that we have to borrow nearly half of it is a good thing to do. Those people aren't stupid. They know better. But they know their constituency includes the takers and will cater to them to get votes. The funny thing to me is that they could get the votes without sending us down the river. They just know that government largess has been working for them. It's our fault. We let them do it.

53% are concerned. Hmm wonder what the other 47% are thinking :)

You can believe that as much as you want, but you would be living in a fairy tale world.

Play with your words all you want. Your insinuation matters, people get it, you aren't hiding anything. "oh don't blame obama oh and repubs would do the same thing"
yada yada yada your left wing rhetoric is pathetic and easy to out. I don't care how you want to try and spin your leftist hate with a play on words. That's what giffords
shooter did and I don't give him any respect and just lost any I had for you.

Enjoy your games in your mind because they aren't good enough to be mind games.

Please point out in my post where I did.

Or you can't because I didn't and you don't have the stones to admit you we're wrong.

Btw, I hold both the Democrats and Republicans responsible. Which is why I advocate more third party representation. Which I did in this very thread. If you paid adequate attention to it.

The rest would probably be the food stamp 47. I see some of them have already jumped on the report as "right wing".
