A major snowstorm is passing through the Great Lakes Thursday morning, and by Friday night could make travel nearly impossible in parts of the Northeast.CBS News weather consultant David Bernard says there is a potential for historic snows and blizzard conditions across the Northeast, with as much as 2 feet of snow in some areas.

Winter nor'easter sweeping into Northeast - CBS News

from what i saw on CNN last night, this has the potential to be a big one, but only if it holds together. this is the first storm i have ever seen where the snowfall prediction is between three inches and thirty plus. either way, be careful out there.

Yep. We're already in total panic mode here at the electric company. We're headed out to start setting up Storm Operations in six different locations later thia morning. Tomorrow morning I need to be in a satelite office for 6am to make sure everything is set up properly and then be back for a 6pm - 6am shift overnight tomorrow night and every night until the restoration operations are complete.

I figure we'll be at it until at least Monday and possibly Tuesday, depending on how bad it really ends up being.

hopefully it will be at the low end of the prediction. lots people who suffered hurricane Sandy definitely don't need another wallop.

A lot of it will depend on whether it's a wet snow or a dry snow. If it's a dry snow, it won't affect things as badly. If it's a wet snow, ice, sleet, etc.... it could be December 2008 all over again.

Yeah a friend of mine who lives in CT posted some pretty scary looking snowfall predictions for that area. All I can say, is HA HA HA--glad it ain't me.......

As someone who has lived through my fair share of those storms from growing up in Michigan, to living in Maryland for 20 years, Good luck Tigger, and may your damage be lite.

Here in southern Mass, we are expected to get anywhere from 12 to 24 inches. I had to go to the store this morning and get some things before everyone else raided everything. I'm hoping to not have to drive anywhere this weekend.

i refer to them as the French toast people : they clear the eggs, milk, and bread shelves immediately before every storm. i've had fantasies about starting a business which sells salt, generators, snow shovels, and other emergency gear. this business would be stocked during the off season, but would only be open in the days before and during a storm when all of the big chains are out of everything.

anyway, i hope that the storm doesn't dump too much snow on you.

Thanks! :)

Lol! Yes, always eggs, milk and bread. So, if you start a business like that, don't forget about the eggs, bread and milk! :2razz:

It's really kind of silly because if you lose power, your eggs and milk are garbage.

The amount of snow falling outside right now is absurd. South Western Ontario getting some real snow.

Button people, its gonna take at least an hour to shovel this stuff. Unless you're fortunate enough to have a snow blower.

I just heard on the news that possibly Boston will be hardest hit. That's about an hour from me. Supposed to be one of Boston's top 5 storms. It's nor'easter time!

Hey, I got my eggs, milk and bread. I say bring it on! :lamo

I always used to include Beer in that list...:) And no, your perishables are not bad if you lose power, at least in winter....The great thing about that is a cooler on the back porch packed with what you want to keep cold will serve just fine.....Also, break out the grill for cooking and fire up the fireplace....

Heck, we were prepared enough, as a truck driver, I have a lot of things that can either run on batteries, or charge by plugging them into the the car, including a TV, so, as long as you can stay warm, and prepare meals, we used to use the time to get a little family time, playing cards, and games, and such....;)

True, very true. I could just stick stuff in the snow.

In our apartment we had two different alcohol cabinents. The normal stuff and then the emergency stuff. Our emergency stash was 2 bottles of vodka, 2 bottles of gin, a bottle of whiskey, and a cooler for whatever beer we could find. That cabinent got us through some tough times.

i have a similar snowstorm emergency kit. while everyone else raids the french toast aisles, i am stocking up on essentials, lol. they don't put french toast around the neck of the St. Bernard they send to find missing hikers, after all.

Who the hell gets french toast?

AllMassachusetts roads are closed as of 4:00 this afternoon. All non-essential traffic is banned as of that time.

Let's hope people comply. How's it going there so far?

We've had well over a foot of snow here in Toronto, just today, not counting last night, and it's still coming down pretty good.

yeah, i was watching the national radar last night and today. looks like you guys took a direct hit.

Usually Buffalo gets the brunt of storms with lake effect snow and we get almost nothing - this time, all the snow seems to be on the north of Lake Ontario and this storm doesn't seem to be directly connected to what's going to go on in New England later.

So much for my dreams of Toronto becoming the new Miami under global warming.

They can be fined or arrested. Light snow here in Worcester so far. Probably about 1.5" of light stuff so far. Gotta go into work 3 hours early and won't be leaving until the storm is over.
