U.S. Postal Service to end Saturday mail delivery in cost-cutting move

I miss the ice man who used to deliever ice to our homes every day too. Many were concerned that not everyone could afford an electric refrigerator but people adapted.

I really feel in the coming years there will not be daily newspaper delivery and postal delivery will be to a post office box or a once weekly mail delivery.

I'd prefer it funded solely off of taxes. The only reason the "need" to profit is that people are screaming that they must. You could always just use tax dollars. Does our government "need" to profit? We run quite the deficit. That's why government is not business.

If it was free, would we have different priorities? Why would you use anything less than overnight delivery?

Can USPS end Saturday delivery without congressional approval?

The United States Postal Service has made good on threats to end Saturday letter delivery, but does Congress need to sign off on the move under its constitutional powers?

That was the one question multiple media outlets were asking on Wednesday, after CBS obtained prepared remarks from Patrick R. Donahoe, postmaster general and CEO of the Postal Service. Donahoe announced the move later on Wednesday.

Donahoe says the Postal Service will only deliver packages and Priority Mail on Saturdays, which could have a significant impact on consumers who expect letters, and direct mailers who send catalogs and other materials through the mail. Mail will be delivered to post office boxes and post offices currently open on Saturday will remain open. Donahoe is also not asking for congressional approval for the move.

But how does such a move conflict with Congress’ traditional role with the Postal Service?

<snip> ... since 1984 Congress has included a provision in its annual appropriation to the USPS stating that ‘6-day delivery and rural delivery of mail shall continue at not less than the 1983 level’,

now for those 'constitutional originalists' among us - what do you say to the following?

Article I, Section 8
The Congress shall have Power ...
To establish Post Offices and post Roads;

If that rule is only in the annual appropriation, then the USPS would be in the right, because there is no appropriation for the USPS right now.
