Do you think the pastor was a jerk? YEP absolutely
Do you think the waitress should have been fired. Tough call, depends on the employee handbook, i wouldnt have fired her but at the same time not sure i can point to anything saying she shouldnt have been fired.

I would have suspended her and thats it.

I don't think the pastor was a jerk and I don't think the waitress should have been fired. Both have rights to be pissed. At the same time the waitress/server automatically got 18% gratuity so she got paid - that's the reason why automatic gratuity is added to checks - so people don't do what happened here. Anything more than the 18% gratuity is a "bonus."

It doesn't work that way.

The gratuity is automatically part of the check. Do you not see "Tip 18%" and "additional tip ______"

She already got 18% of the bill as a tip - which given the bill amount is about $7.50 (rounding). That's not bad at all considering the server probably has 5-10 tables and makes an hourly wage a round 3 bucks an hour. So do the math - this server is probably making 25-30 bucks an hour when it's busy just in 18% gratuity.

to each their own but IMO the pastor was definitely a jerk and stupid because while she may have the right to be pissed she certainly didnt act like a pastor and took it out on the wrong person, the waitress has nothign to do with it

Haven't you ever gotten a bill like that? Initially, the bill includes the tip, but after they run the card, it's up to you to fill in the tip. The Pastor only authorized the $34, so that's all the restaurant could charge on it.

The funniest part of this bull**** is that it was a pastor that said "I give 10% to God..." Basically what that pastor is saying is, "I make my income by taking 10% from everyone coming to my church."

Worthless jerk.

Auto gratuities usually aren't applied unless parties are over a certain amount like 8 people or more for instance.

Just curious, why did you round up $1.21?

Here's how you can tell if the tip was added or not. You can tell that the 18% gratuity was calculated at $6.29 (it's still legible underneath her scrawling it out). Divide that number by 0.18 to figure out exactly what amount it is 18% of.

When you do this, you get $34.94444444444

Since the check amount was $34.93, and 18% of 34.93 is 6.2874, we can assume that the $6.29 amount was rounded up from 6.2874.

You can also double check by taking the 6.29 and subtracting it from 34.93, getting 28.64. If the 18% gratuity was added to the total, it means the check amount was $28.64. But 18% of 28.64 is only 5.1552, so that is an impossibility.

Thus, math tells us that the authorized amount did not include a tip.

Do you not understand automatic gratuity and the reasoning behind the idea?

You ever work as a server? I have. The tip is automatically included in the check - hence gratuity - anything after that is a bonus.

The whole idea is to ensure an individual gets paid regardless if the customer is willing to tip or not.

Honestly I think this story is funny. I suppose it sucks that people are taking out their anger on other common people because the government steals all their money or singles out and demonizes particular religions and organizations, however how else do you expect the public in general to open their eyes? Most people don't pay attention to anything unless they're affected... If anything I'm glad people are starting to speak with their wallets.

That isn't true - every major non-fast food restaurant chain has automatic gratuity. Of course mom and pop diners generally don't, however we're talking about Applebees - not the corner diner.

Oh yeah, not to mention the damn receipt says "18% gratuity" then it says "additional gratuity" as well.

What? No she didn't. That's the issue. She was supposed to get the auto gratuity, but the woman crossed it out on the check, then authorized payment of only the total from the bill, absent the auto gratuity. The server got zero. It's all right there on the check itself.

The $34.00 includes the tip - the 18% was already added to the check - meaning 82% of the check was the actual meal cost and 18% of the 34 was a tip. Anything beyond that is just a bonus for the server.

Having given Applebee's a piece of my mind via their customer response system, they gave me a generalized response that the gratuity was paid to the waitress.

Thank you for contacting us. As a company that relies on literally hundreds of thousands of incredibly hard working team members, I can assure you that we and our franchisees value and support them and their efforts. However this unfortunate situation has nothing to do with work. The employee involved did not wait on the guest or party. Regrettably, and without the restaurant's knowledge, she took it upon herself to take a customer's receipt, with the name clearly visible, and posted it online with her own commentary. That is a clear violation of our guests’ privacy and against the franchisee's company policy that the team member was provided when hired. We simply cannot accept behavior that compromises the safety and privacy our guests have every right to expect and deserve.

Please note that we are also not excusing the guest's behavior in this matter and the unacceptable comment she wrote on the receipt, which is offensive to us and all our hard working team members. To be clear, the 18% gratuity added to large party tickets was paid by the guests party. This is a regrettable situation and we wish it had never happened. I hope this provides you with some additional insight. Thanks again for the chance to explain.

Sincerely,

Courtney M.

Yes she did get 18 percent of the actual meal cost.

It's amazing how people don't get this.

The cost of the meal + 18% of the cost of the meal = the total ($43 bucks in this case).

I don't think so.

Sometimes people need to make a point. As I elaborated in an earlier post - some people don't understand a concern until they're personally affected/effected by the concern.

And the point is nonsensical because it was made to the wrong person. Its broken logic to be ignorant to the waitress is isnt responsible for your unhappiness especially being a person of god

I know, ill punch my neighbor because im mad at people who commit child abuse, you know, just to make a point and so he is personally affected by it.

Your analogy is over-dramatic. The server got an 18% tip already.

Sometimes a person has to be an ass to make a point, because when you try to make your point nicely no one listens.

Maybe you should analyze the point behind leaving no tip instead of assuming the pastor was just being an ass. Maybe this world (at least in the US) is a Godless world with no faith - a world full of conceited people who truly only care about themselves - a nation that wants government to steal from one and give to another - a world that degrades people who don't adhere to whatever pop culture PC standard that is set...

But at the same time it could be none of that - maybe the server was just unkind and rude. Maybe the server was an atheist who was snickering at the fact he/she had to serve a faith based individual?? for all I know he/she could have been mocking the faith behind the pastors back...

I don't see a pastor pulling such a stunt unprovoked, however the motive can only be speculated.

Do you assume that the server did something to earn the pastor's despicable comment?

That seems unknowable at this point. It looks like the pastor was complaining about the gratuity.

you may have that opinion but it shows your broken logic

and we dont know if she got a tip, you ASSUME that

but look at what you just said, i called the pastor a jerk and you said you don't think so now you are saying the pastor was an ass, so we agree the pastor was an ass or jerk which ever term you prefer

the rest of your assumptions are also meaningless as i stated in MY posts that if the information i have is true the pastor was a jerk

that point still stands and theres no logic reason to think otherwise

I don't think he said anything despicable, nor do I think he was being cheap.

All he said was "why do you get 18% when I give God 10?"

I think such a response would certainly be provoked....

Besides, this whole argument is moot considering she already got a mandatory 18% tip - which is highly generous in its own right.

When I tip - if they're rude and suck they get 10%, average is 20% and superb is 30%+. If I really like a server and if I can afford It I will tip 500%+.... Hell, around Christmas I ordered a couple of pizzas and the total was like 25 bucks or something - I gave the driver a c-note and told him to keep the change... At the same time I have never wanted to tip because the person taking care of me or my party were just rude and treated me like I was a problem in their day/night.. That is another reason why I like to tip big to nice people - I don't look like a big tipper or anything (or look like I could even afford a big tip) So when I'm treated above average it shows that individual who is serving you actually does care and will treat you the same as the millionaire a booth over...

I suppose my point is that little things tell you a lot about an individual and people who go the extra way should be rewarded for their actions.
