Since we're griping here's another one. Sometimes an establishment will put out a special or coupon but insist you pay the tip on what the amount would have been. If you're tipping on the amount of the bill, then that's what it should be. Someone said "It's not the fault of the server" but if the server is unhappy with the pricing policies of the place they can work somewhere else.

and if you cannot afford the tip, then you cannot afford the meal, and should not eat there

but when you say down and ordered in a party, where it was posted that an X% gratuity will be added to the checks of parties having Y number of persons, you have obligated yourself to pay that auto tip
I understand if it's printed on the menu that you are legally obligated, I'm saying sometimes the server doesn't deserve it but the customer has no choice.

I've never seen a restaurant insist on that. I've seen them ask their diners to do it, but never seen it be mandatory. I like being a generous tipper. Servers work hard for their money. They deserve it. I overtip off-setting others who think like you do -- so that waitstaff can make a decent living.

Bottom line I guess is, if you don't like the policies at a restaraunt don't work there or support them. I wouldn't blame people though for being upset and not supporting establishments that use atuotip for 8+ party tables. I guess I see both sides of the issue with atuotip.
I see both sides, and as I said...I usually tip better than if they ran the autotip. I simply don't like the presumption that well...Im going to get autotipped anyway so boom...bad service.

Heheh, it's not about affording the tip, it's about how tipping which is supposed to be discretionary, is not anymore. Servers expect 18% even if the service is bad.

Many times in this thread I said the pastor was a jerk. I even mocked her little note.

But what I say, I base on the fact that every single person on this Earth is a jerk on some days. Do you want to be judged by one of your slip-ups being posted on the Internet, and have everyone and their brother assume you're a horrible, horrible person? That's what you're doing here.

And do you want that kind of hatred coming down on someone in the name of your company?
You know what bothers me most about what the pastor did? She brought the religion that she and I presumably share into it and brought God up as a reason to not share her money. If I read the receipt correctly, she even signed it as "Pastor". That's a terrible example. If she had just not tipped and left some mean comment on the receipt unrelated to her faith, I'd probably agree with you more, but, to me, it's worse because she's supposed to exemplify the love and generosity of Christ, and not only to those who are in her congregation.

I don't think the Pastor's a bad person. I don't know her. She did say in the article she was embarrassed. It looks to me like she's getting a much deserved and needed lesson in humility. I hope she takes it to heart and learns from this.

I haven't commented on this but I agree, she went public and shouldn't have.

But this illustrates the entitlement mentality of some servers to their 18%.

It's also that stupid decision of hers which got the receipt posted online. Had she decided to just be a douche, it wouldn't have become a story. But she decided to be a douche in God's name.
