Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about[W: 55]

Fair enough. I think she clearly badmouthed the customer. Effectively telling people in a public forum that the customer is cheapskate is badmouthing them in my opinion.

well i dont know if there was any verbiage with the post of the PIC but i dont call it bad mouthing when its accurate in my opinion.

IMO badmouthing is saying something untrue or very subjective.

Re: Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-t

When are folks going to learn to stop posting their ****ing business on the internet?

I would have fired her too, total idiot. That pastor was in the wrong too, but that's besides the point. The waitress dropped the ball posting something like that on the internet. She can only blame herself.

Re: Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-t

If what i know about the story is true, shes a good employee and this is all she did, id give her a job right now if i owned a restaurant.

Re: Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-t

I see nothing wrong with the pastor, he complained about a charge he thinks is unjust. People do that all the time

Unjust? There are Christians all over the world literally imprisoned or even killed just for their beliefs, and the injustice this Pastor was so incensed about was an extra 3% on a tip?

Did you see the receipt, Digs? She (the Pastor) made a big point of making the tip $0. What was the purpose of saying she gives 10% to God? Was she trying to impress the waitress? You and I both know you're not supposed to give with the intention of drawing attention and kudos for it. In fact, nobody should even know you're doing it. If the Pastor wanted to come off like an arrogant tightwad, I'd prefer she not do so in the name of God

The waitress should be fired as well, she posted his personal info.

The only personal info was the name and that's not exactly private. If the Pastor was embarrassed by what she wrote, she shouldn't have written it.

I think Applebees was within their rights to fire her.

I think the real issue here is waiter compensation in general. Whether a waiter gets paid a decent wage should not depend on whether a customer feels like tipping or not. Did you know that the federal minimum wage for a tipped employee is a little over $2 an hour? If the tips don't make up the difference, the employer is supposed to.

I don't understand why we don't just build it in to customers' bills, so that employees are making a livable wage regardless of whether their customers are jackass pastors or not. Then a tip would actually mean something.

If I'm not mistaken, this is how it works almost everywhere else in the world already.

I agree that they should not do so in the name of God or compare tipping to tithing, but I don't think complaining about the charge makes the person a jerk. It's hard to understand the context from what little is written on the receipt. It could be that the pastor doesn't want any tip charge put on the bill so that they can choose the amount to tip. I'm not saying the charge is unjust, but I am saying that if someone thinks it is that they shouldn't be branded as a jerk simply for thinking that 18% may be too much or if anything should be charged at all.

The only personal info was the name and that's not exactly private. If the Pastor was embarrassed by what she wrote, she shouldn't have written it.

It could be due to my background and the fact that I've been indoctrinated by my school to protect the privacy of others (medical info and all that), but I think comments that were meant to be in private should remain private. This person may be a local public figure, but that doesn't mean that things they say privately should be made public against their consent. It's one thing if someone overhears a private convo or saw them write the note, it's another thing for an angry waitress to go out of their way and share this with everyone.

the best part of this which makes the pastor even more stupid besides bringing up God, is why complain too and stiff the waitress. It has nothing to do with her UNTIL she stiffed her.

the waitress doesn't make the rules.

Not to mention that 10% of the pastor's annual income is a great deal more than 18% of a $35 check. If God only got 18% of $35, God'd probably think she was an ignorant ****, too.

Who all here think tipping has gotten out of hand? I just came back from Japan where tipping is considered an insult yet I received service that would put many establishments here to shame.

How about business pay their people what is commensurate with the job, figure it into the price and if I get bad service I can complain.

in the restaurant service or any field where they dont make minimum wage im fine with tipping, if its "expected" anywhere else then you might come up short.

but then again i think its bull to have a loop hole to not pay minimum wage

Re: Applebee’s fires waitress who posted receipt from pastor complaining about auto-t

This is just demonstratively false. If that was the case, the pastor would've been harassed even if the waitress had not posted the picture. There's no evidence that such harassment occured prior to that point, nor that it would have. The pastor was harassed due to a combination of actions on the part of herself, the waitress, and those doing the harassment.

I don't have any sympthoy for the pastor for the harassment and it's a strange karmatic type of thing....but the waitress did have a hand in it.

I can appreciate the desire to protect and back their employee that some want, and I'd probably be that way as well in terms of any public issue of it...but at the same time, I'd definitely be taking some actions privately to let her know that it's one thing to be upset at a douchebag customer, it's another thing to take something that is business related with customer info and post it for the world to see.

NOne of this would have happened had the 'pastor' not instigated it all with her insulting and demeaning comments. It's too bad the waitress has to pay the price.

Dealing with boorish customers is part and parcel of a service job. If you can't effectively do it and if you can't let childish bull**** like what the pastor did roll off your back you shouldn't work directly with customers. There was no need to do what the employee did. It potentially harms her employer's reputation and business which she has a responsibility to protect.

Nonsense. No employee is under any obligation to tolerate rude and boorish behavior by customers, and frankly any employer that expects their employees to be punching bags for the public probably isn't worth working for in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, the customer isn't always right.

Sometimes the truth can be painful.

Agreed.

But why do we tip taxi drivers? If they handle my bags I have no prob tossing them a few greenbacks, it's a personal service. But why do we "tip" our hairstylist, they're making 40-100 off the hour we spend with them. Why do we tip a masseuse, I just paid $100 for that hour.

Ido agree some of the people/industries that we tip or tip in certainly cultures/cites is inconsistent.

I never heard of tipping a hair dresser and yes ive tipped cabbies IF they handle luggage, i tip Jitney sine most of them are personal cars.

hmmm never tip a masseuse but again the SPA might get 100 but the masseuse may get minimum wage.
anybody that touches my naked ass can get a tip from me LMAO ;)

And again, why won't anyone mention Manny in the living room?

Why is a masseuse touching you're naked ass?

Absolutely true. Doesn't change the facts that I stated not the waitresses part in it. Note that I placed some responsibility in ALL parties. It was you who erroneously placed on a singular person

duh to earn a tip ;)

Well, eroneous to you. She instigated it. The only thing the waitress did was to share her rude and boorish behavior with the internet world. Here's a tip - if you don't want that sort of junk made public, then don't do it.

Firstly I reread the linked article and just realized that it wasn't even the server who posted the guest check. It was another employee. That is even less excusable than if the server herself posted it. I'll answer however as if it was the server who posted the check since that's the assumption I've been using all along.

No one is saying that customers are allowed to treat guests like punching bags. Posting the receipt on the Internet after the fact is not an act designed to stop a badly behaving customer from being abusive. It's revenge. It's childish tit-for-tat game playing. And this is customer wasn't even being abusive. And the server certainly went being treated like a punching bag.

First this pastor is a friggen moron. According to what i have read they attend this applebees after services regularly. The internet aside the waitstaff in restaurants talks. You screw with one of them and you can guarantee your service will be the bare minimum in the future. In other words if yopu are ever going to stiff the waitstaff be sure it is your last time in that location and many other local locations.

The second part is that this is not a tip as much as it is a service charge for being a large party. I assume the management put the charge on the card anyway as it was not a voluntary gratuity as it would have been clearly spelled out on the menu and perhaps by the staff also so they do not get any whining by cheapskates. I would be lovely if we could just cross things out on the receipt we get when we charge something and have those items not charged, but it does not work that way.

Which brings me to my next point, wow that was friggen ass. really, you are going to insult a waitress by telling her you gave her tip to god? This is why i have referred my complaints to the POS church of crap that employs said pastor. OMG what a friggen scam evangelical place that is. I know where their donations go, and it is to the bling of their leader. I am not terribly surprised at this response after seeing the types of people who attend and run that church. Unfortunately applebees is corporate, but i am sure these people attend a corporate location because any privately owned location has told them to get lost long ago. You can bet this is not the first time this person has acted in such a disgusting and reprehensible manner. People who are cheap like that and feel others are there to serve them for free do it all the time.

In customer service jobs where you are paid to deal professionally with crap I would normally say it was wrong to publically out the cheapskate POS. Not so much when it happens to waitstaff. they do ahard job where they are often not paid minimum wage because it is expected that customers pay directly for their service through tips. basically most restaurants pay waiters to show up, and the pay for service comes from those who they serve. The waitress is not your mom. You are paying them to serve you. maybe it should be that they are paid by the restaurant to serve you instead of leaving it to tips, but that is not our system presently. So, since the customer is also the person who is paying for that service time then it should be noted when the customer doesn't pay. The same way it should be noted if some employer does not pay for employees services rendered. If you went to work and your boss decided not to pay you, then you would make a public issue out of it. It is the same thing here.

that person wrote the note to insult the staff and now the world knows what a POS that person is. it is now enshrined on the internet for all to see. Perhaps if they feel embarassed by such a thing they should not have acted in such an embarassing way. I can see why corporate applebees did what they did as they make their money off of the food markup and they get that money no matter what so they do not give a damn if the cheapskates stiff their staff. However all the waitpeople in the area should know that this person will do whatever they can to avoid paying a tip, and they will be insulting on top of it. You get what you pay for service wise, and those who give service to these people should know they should not kill themselves to get an insult. Oh, and I have a little more selfish reason for that. I have a reputation for tipping well, and while they ignore the cheapskates i get good service. I often love how some of the cheapest people are also the ones who often support a free market. The free market states if i pay better i get better service, otherwise it is communism. It is amazing how many right wing tightwads are out there thinking they are entitled to good service for free.

you can be sure that a few cheapskates and tightwads out there will think twice before stiffing a serve knowing that their actions will be seen by many others. That person thought they wrote a note to insult the server. if they wanted to bitch about a mandatory service charge for large parties they should have taken it up with the host, manager, or corporate. the server did not make that rule. beware if you are a person like that. A crappy reputation before the internet was a local stigma, now anyone can find out how scummy you are. if you don't like it then don't be a dick. It also seems you are unaware that waitstaff knows who the crappy customers are without the internet, and waitpeople love to talk about their crappy customers even before the internet ever existed.

that person deserved to be outed, and now they are getting what they deserve. If you want to be a dick you need to be ready to face the consequences.
