But what would you do if an employee started shaming customers publicly, using your company's name?
That would depend upon what the customer did and what, exactly, was posted online.

I base my behavior on what I consider right and wrong rather than what I consider expedient, and so my reaction would have to do with my gut feeling instead of some calculation on how it might affect my business.

In the case of the Pharisee in question, the waitress only posted the receipt and did not take direct aim at her in any way that was threatening, harassing or malicious. As such, any heat the Pharisee received was from others for her boorish behavior rather than from the waitress directly.

The pastor was a dick, and the Waitress learned a stiff lesson about social networking and the dangers of it in our new interconnected world.

A decade ago, or even perhaps 5 years ago, she shows this to a few friends and that's it and nothing happens.

Now, with how much more ubiquous Facebook has become and how Twitter has blown up and how many bloggers there are now, posting something like this to your wall can percipitate a country wide sweep of that information into the hands of tens of thousands.

You know what? "Shaming" was the wrong word. I changed it to "insulting."

I'd fire the waitress. Even without privacy considerations it's unacceptable for and establishment's staff to disparage customers.

As for the pastor, you can make a good case for her having committed theft by not paying the gratuity. If the gratuity is clearly spelled out in advance she's liable for it. The restaurant can choose to not make a deal of it - and again in the interest of customer service they probably should - but I'm willing to bet that if they did decide to push the issue she could face legal trouble.

That's correct; this pastor could end up being harassed by thousands and thousands of people from all over the world. (Wouldn't be surprised if it has already happened.)

She was a jerk, but she wasn't so much of a jerk that she deserves that.

OK, so you MIGHT take action against an employee.

Well, I disagree with that (she posted it with an insulting caption), but YMMV.

There are similar privacy policies with companies about posting personal information about customers.
I have to agree. If she had not shown the name, she would have had an argument. As it stands, she will make a ton of money on the talk show circuit and she will benefit in the end.
Oh, and the pastor is a jerk....................

The Pharisee's behavior was insulting, and exposing such behavior is not an insult in, and of itself. Had the waitress called her names, this would constitute an insult, but shining a light on the boorishness isn't.

That the Pharisee felt shame is because she was revealed for what she is, and she deserves every bit of it.

People treat wait people like crap all the time, as they do anybody who deals with the public. This stupid notion that "the customer is always right" has been taken to such ridiculous extremes that anybody who has to deal with the public is usually treated with such disrespect that they might as well be an untouchable. I don't buy it. That the Pharisee struts around as if she can treat a waitress in any way she chooses is HER problem, and maybe it's about time she was shamed for it.

Now, hold on. You're making some pretty sweeping assumptions about someone based on what she did one time in one situation. You don't know anything else about the pastor; you're just assuming she's an all-around terrible person. Maybe SHE was having a bad day, too. You don't know.

And that's the point -- the waitress posted this with a snarky comment, and here even YOU are pouring a torrent of hate on the pastor.

If that's the kind of thing you'd want coming down on your customers, in the name of your company, then so be it, I guess.

    Very nice Jesus analogy!
