Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody[W: 150]

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Please list the specific NRA policies.

To name one, their opposition to background checks for ALL gun sales.

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Two morons shooting at each other? Three innocents hit, one moron in custody, appears to be unharmed, other moron may be still loose. Not only a gun free zone, but a quite zone too - the campus library.

This is why they should teach shooting and gun control in high school. At least then if you're gonna shoot someone, you hit your target.

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Did I miss where it was posted/reported that the weapon used was unregistered?

Once the facts are in, perhaps then the anti-gun folks can show where any of their proposed solutions would do jack to have prevented this.

Sure they would -

To name one, their opposition to background checks for ALL gun sales.

Although the following example doesn't specifically discuss firearms it does give some insight as to why blanket registration is undesirable -
Police misuse database: Number of officers accused of misusing state driver database skyrockets - OrlandoSentinel.com

Whenever you have these databases set up they can be, and often are, abused. There were at least 2 break ins in Rockland County of houses listed by that newspaper as the residence of registered gun owners. We can't say for sure that the thieves used the list but it was one of the principle concerns when that map got published. The above example shows abuse of a comparable list by police officials and I can pretty much guarantee you that if a gun owners database was established that it too would be abused and possibly compromised by a group like Wikileaks.

In case you haven't noticed there is a HUGE amount of animosity toward lawful gun owners right now. No small amount of that hyperventilation is coming from elected officials and there is NO WAY that in this climate or in the next surge that we, as lawful citizens, can count on the government protecting our right to privacy. Hell, it's not too far fetched to figure that some "vigilante" with access to the database would expose it as a "public service".

2 break ins that they can't say for sure about the cause of, is why you would continue to oppose allowing gun purchase access to over 50,000 people that can't pass the background check?

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Two people are in custody as "persons of interest." My understanding is that this was a personal confrontation. A maintenance man in his 50's (the innocent bystander) was wounded, and a lady may have had a heart attack. Many surrounding schools were on lockdown, and thousands of folks have been ridiculously inconvenienced.

I think you may be confusing two different things.

Registration means providing your information to some authority for the purpose of having it recorded as a prerequisite for something else (such as possessing a firearm).

The background check instituted by the Brady bill isn't registration. It's a simple check of basic records to see if the purchaser is a "prohibited person" under the law. There is also opposition to that check but such opposition is primarily focused on private citizens not subject to federal firearms licensee requirements making that check. In that case it a matter of extending federal authority to broadly cover private intrastate commerce.....a power which the federal government does not currently have.

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

My niece attends Lonestar. She's okay. She wasn't on campus when the shootings occurred.

Just wondering if any of our rootin'-tootin' Texans were able to pull out their pistol and stop the guy?

Given what we now know about what happened, your question is most fitting as the post of the day.
And I mean that most sincerely.

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Houston we have a problem! The fifth shooting incident at an American educational establishment since January 10th.

" ...The incident took place between 12.30pm and 12.50pm CT at a Lone Star College campus to the north of Houston, according to the Harris County sheriff's office. Eyewitness accounts suggest that two men began arguing and both suffered gunshot wounds during the altercation. A maintenance man who was an innocent bystander was also shot, in the leg. A fourth person, a woman, was taken ill at the scene. All were hospitalised.

Police said that both suspects were in custody. One was detained at the campus then taken to hospital while the other was on the loose for more than an hour before reportedly turning himself in at a medical center.... "

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Actually, from what I've been able to glean so far, it seems to have been a personal dispute between 2 students who were both armed and a couple of people got caught in the crossfire.
I am pretty certain that we can expect more of this, especially with so many newly obtained guns in the hands of ordinary folk. Just like being in their car gives some people courage to do things they wouldn't normally do, carrying a gun will also give some people a similar false sense of security and invincibility.

The Texas answer is simple. More guns in the classrooms.

They are working diligently to see that happen.

Don't mess with Texas.

Do you have a link to an NRA statement or anything of that sort.

As I remember, the NRA moved to propose universal background checks in President Obama's EO's.

the news tonight (6 PM cincinnati) suggested the following

1) the campus was a gun free zone meaning the shooters were not supposed to be armed and thus probably didn't have CCW permits

2) it appeared to be a dispute between two from a prior incident which escalated into a gun fight

blaming the NRA is idiotic. blaming it on anything until more information comes to light is moronic

catawba is on record desiring complete bans of all guns. He also is on record as stating that if the public wants gun bans or if Obama wants gun bans that is all the evidence needed for gun bans to be applied.

Re: Lone Star College Shooting Leaves 3 Injured, 'Person of Interest' in Custody

Okay, we get that you hate the 2nd Amendment. Gotcha!! We get it.

Nope. Just hate whackos, quackos and nutters that abuse it.

The 2nd amendment is alive and well in my house.

I support insanely (cruel and unusual punishment the left calls it,) harsh penalties for gun crimes. Hard labor. No good time. Long sentences up to and including the chair. But I was told harsher sentences would put the lives of policemen in danger.

I was just trying to point out to the class that all that Texas braggadocio about them and their guns didn't seem to help much today. But I hear they are pushing a new law to allow 21 and older people that qualify to be on campus armed.

What makes you think they would ever be willing to compromise even if they otherwise would be agreeable behind closed doors when their opposition is not willing to do anything other than demand and take, demand and take in all things political?

according to 700 WLW at 6 PM or its sister station (550 KRC-cannot recall which one the wife had on in the car) it was a gun free zone

don't know where they got that but others are saying it

Gun-Free Zone: Shooting at Lone Star College in Houston

t is the policy of this [college] System to prohibit the carrying of firearms, knives, or clubs onto any of the System's facilities. The possession of firearms, illegal knives, and prohibited knives on System facilities including parking areas and publicly accessed facilities is a violation of criminal law and Board policies.

yeah, those two gunsels could have had a fist fight, but because they had guns, they hurt others as well as themselves with their argument.

you libs prefer it when only the psychotic killers have guns-then the massacres will have lots of dead innocents that you all can use to advance your idiotic anti gun agenda
