House Republican caucus bungles "Communicating with Minorities and Women" meeting

You can't possibly make this up.

Reporters quickly noted that a session for lawmakers called "Discussion on Successful Communication with Minorities and Women" will actually take place in the “Burwell Plantation” room at the resort where the retreat is being held.

It turns out, according to NBC News, the room “is named after the Burwell Family, a wealthy family that owned many slaves in 18th century Southern Virginia.”

The irony of learning how to woo minorities in a room named after slaveholders was not lost on Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR): “I don't pick the rooms we meet in.”

But the missteps didn’t end there.

The New York Times reports the panel discussion on how to communicate with minorities and women included three white lawmakers. Walden had to note that the panel would include several women, whom he identified as “a woman from CNN” and “Sean Duffy’s wife.”
Ah, I can't wait for the hordes of Rugged Individualists™ questioning why these Goddamn RINOs are even trying to reach out to minorities and women discriminating against white men by having a meeting focusing on minorities and women.

Although, to be honest, even if minorities are beyond their reach, white middle-class women surely aren't. They'd just need to appeal to them in the way Bill Clinton appealed to the "soccer moms" of the 1990s - PORN ON TELEVISION! VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA! etc. Microtargeted 'moral issues' would fit like a hand in a glove with their preexisting Religious Right base.

Moral hysteria moves the white women of this nation like no other phenomenon, and no other group of individuals are as good at exploiting moral hysteria as the Grand Ol' Party.

It was a poor decision, but I mostly attribute this to historical ignorance and pure innocence. On a broader level, however, much of Washington D.C. becomes a problematic symbol for holding political discussions with racial minorities.

Like the vast majority of Republican minority policy, actually.

Which of those two legislated victim groups are you, the OP? Or is it the third major group?

After so many hate filled, stark raving mad posts, this is an excellent opportunity to determine if you have the courage to be honest.

One could reasonably expect honesty from someone who describes themselves as "Elitist as Hell" couldn't one?

I'm a white male. I'm not so lucky to be victimized like, say, a Christian.

No, what you can't possibly make up is the fact that this is an issue worthy of mention beyond The Onion or a News of the Weird feature.

This is nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence. I'm willing to bet that whoever booked this little soiree just asked for a room big enough for the group scheduled to occupy it, and knew nothing of what room would ultimately be assigned to them -- or what the history of the family name was.

It was probably put together by some staffer, a kid too young to know or care of the particular family names associated with slavery in 18th century America, and it probably cost them their job because of the resulting hysteria.

At any rate, the Republican party knows it needs to figure a number of things out so that they don't get stepped on in the next election. It doesn't surprise me in the least that they're having sit-downs like this.
I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

What it actually indicates is that the staffers for these caucus members ought to be unemployed, as they're apparently incapable of doing the slightest things that Congressional staffers ought to do - like study the symbolic value of historical locations.

So it is the third gender. That would account for the pathology of angry superiority.

No one else would have brought up and insulted Christianity.

What "third gender"? Are you hitting on me?
