ALGIERS (Reuters) - Islamist militants attacked a gas field in Algeria on Wednesday, claiming to have kidnapped up to 41 foreigners including seven Americans in a dawn raid in retaliation for France's intervention in Mali, according to regional media reports.

The raiders were also reported to have killed three people, including a Briton and a French national.

An al Qaeda affiliated group said the raid had been carried out because of Algeria's decision to allow France to use its air space for attacks against Islamists in Mali, where French forces have been in action against al Qaeda-linked militants since last week.

"The site was attacked and occupied by a group of unidentified armed people at about 0500 UK time. Contact with the site is extremely difficult, but we understand that armed individuals are still occupying the In Amenas operations site," it said.
Algeria's official APS news agency said a Briton and an Algerian security guard had been killed and seven people were injured including two foreigners. A French national was also killed in the attack, a local source said.
Also among those reported kidnapped by various sources were five Japanese nationals working for the Japanese engineering firm JGC Corp, a French national, an Irishman, a Norwegian and a number of Britons.

Anyone notice how "armed militants" and "raiders" kill people in other countries, but "guns" kill people here in America?

If only they had gun free zones:lol:

What is the difference between an Islamist and a Muslim?

Why not just come out and say that the terrorist attacks around the world are committed by Muslims?

Everyone knows the truth about the "religion of peace" anyway.

Terrorist attacks are committed by people of all faiths, and by people who lack faith. (although I would suggest any terrorist's "faith" is superficial at best, seeing as how there is no holy book that condones terrorism)

In America we have "Christianists," I.E. Christians who want to impose their religious doctrine onto everyone through social or political means. Even violent means on occasion. I'm sure Islamists are in America too, but they wield no political power.

Are you ok with one but not the other?

There are two billion Muslims in the world. Even if two million of them were evil, that would only be .2% of all Muslims.

Islamists believe in using the power of government and violence to enforce their religious morality, much like many fundamentalist Christians in the USA. Muslims believe in the Islamic teachings in general, not necessarily everything in the Koran interpreted literally. This is much like most Jews and Christians who do not take the entire Bible literally. This is a good thing since the Bible advocates as much or more violence and intolerance as the Koran.

Turkey has a population that is mostly Muslim yet most of its citizens support having a secular government. This is also true in several other Muslim majority nations.

To be fair, not every Muslim is an extremist jihadi just like not every Christian is Eric Rudolph.

Generally, an Islamist is a certain type of Muslim who is considered a "fundamentalist" and who wants a return to very strict law and government over people as dictated by the Koran.

According to some of the journalists at the telegraph, the abductors, with a name meaning "Witnesses of Blood" are demanding a return of 100 Islamist prisoners. And they say it's a response to Algeria allowing France to use that airspace for their attacks in Mali.. And they'll blow up the whole place if they don't allow them and their hostages passage to rendezvous with their pals in Mali. UK PM David Cameron is talking to Algerian PM Abdelmalek Sellal about the situation.

Oh look. Ray is generalizing a HUGE swath of people so he can extoll the virtues of not liking them. How surprising and unexpected.

One's being a Muslim refers to one's religious faith. One's being an Islamist refers to one's support or efforts to bring about political change, sometimes through violence, that would be consistent with one's interpretation of Islam.

Not all Muslims are Islamists.

So called "moderate" Muslims are those who are not following the Koran explicitly. This makes them a potential target by devout Muslims. For this reason we can not expect their help in opposing the "true" Muslims performing violent Jihad. They just want to live their lives in peace. And even though the violent and non-violent Jihadists represent a minority, they are easily sufficiently numerous to effectively achieve their goal of bringing down America when the time comes.

And when will the time come?

Seek the answer online. It is there to be found. Seek the answer and act accordingly.

Yet again, there are over 2 billion Muslims, to claim that the majority of those are violent is idiotic at best. But please, feel free to continue your moronic claim.

Try reading my post later and see if you feel the same as you do now. Let me know when you do and then we can talk about this in the spirit of learning and exploration.

Yet again, you don't speak for 2 billion people nor do you know the hearts and minds of all 2 billion people. I have more experience with Muslims than you do that's for sure.

I wouldn't doubt the length of your exerience. But did you grow up in America?

What are you trying to do here, draw some kind of equivalency? So we have Christians taking hostages just like these Islamists over there? Is that what you're selling here?

Weak American leadership has emboldened the Islamists throughout the world and their three pronged attack (through violence, propaganda, and protests) will continue to grow.

Meanwhile the politically illiterate are still debating whether or not all Muslims are terrorists, just as pre WWII these same dangerously naive people were debating whether or not all Germans were Nazis..

And what is your answer? Deport all American Muslims or put them in camps? Kill all the Muslims. What is your great master plan genious huh?

You are ignoring the impact of decades of American and European interference in middle eastern affairs which includes deposing democratically elected leaders, assassinations, bribery, and political and financial support of brutal dictators that got rich by impoverishing their countries. One reason the Islamists have flourished in recent years is that many of the USA supported dictators were more tolerant of religious organizations, even those with extremist views, than they were of any form of political dissent. Add to the mix our unwarranted bombings, invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq and the extra-judicial incarcerations, torture and murders and it is little wonder why those who hate the west may be gaining influence.

Anyone with even the slightest interest in discovering the truth and rudimentary internet search skills can attest to your statement here.

So, do you think I would post something so readily dis - proved?

Are those your plans?

First of all we have to acknowledge that a problem exists, but the modern day Neville Chamberlains can't even admit that much. Instead they repeat, as nauseum, that not all Muslims are terrorists, as though that's a truth they only recently stumbled upon.

Nice dodge of the question, so I'll ask you again, what is your solution to the problem?
