Obama expected to nominate Chuck Hagel as secretary of Defense

Hagel deserved every bit of it and then some.

His response to his own words being played before him ?

He denied his sentiment. Your typical politician under questioning.

i detect anger because the republicans were unable to touch him in the hearings

The Case against Hagel.....
Why the former Nebraska senator is the wrong choice for the Pentagon, by.....

page_2012_200_cornyn_square.jpg

Republican Senator John Cornyn Senate Whip!!!!!

After all, the former Nebraska senator is the same person who has consistently opposed sanctions against Iran. He is the same person who wanted Washington to support Iranian membership in the World Trade Organization. The same person who voted against designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group (at a time when the IRGC was orchestrating the murder of U.S. troops in Iraq). The same person who refused to sign a letter asking the European Union to label Hezbollah (an Iranian proxy) a terror group. The same person who urged President Bush to offer Iran “direct, unconditional, and comprehensive talks.” The same person who called for establishing a U.S. diplomatic mission in Tehran. The same person who dismissed “a military strike against Iran” as “not a viable, feasible, responsible option.” The same person who wrote that a nuclear Iran might be tolerable because “sovereign nation-states possessing nuclear weapons capability (as opposed to stateless terrorist groups) will often respond with some degree of responsible, or at least sane, behavior.”

I realize that Senator Hagel is now repudiating many of his past actions and statements. But this sudden and convenient transformation beggars belief. Hagel has not undergone an abrupt ideological makeover; he is just desperate to win Senate approval. It is a classic “confirmation conversion.”.....snip~

The Case against Hagel - John Cornyn - National Review Online

Looks like the Republican Whip in the Senate did just that. Thus once again.....showing the left doesn't even have a clue.

hell, these are all compelling reasons to want someone of his intellect and independence at the helm of the DoD:

Looks like the Senator from Texas plus Rubio, Cruz and Graham.....think otherwise. Course they would know just how much work Hagel has done as a Republican and since he has been in D.C. despite most of his Absences from MOST Republican Caucuses.

Other than a ringing endorsement from right-wing punditry land, exactly what qualifications where you looking for?

Dept of Defense expertise, executive expertise, related education. The job of the Secretary of Defense is to adminster the largest military in the world, millions of soliders, and advise the president on national defense policy. Being a politician does not qualify someone for this. Compare this to say, David Petreus, who, ignoring, his personal issues, greaduated from the military academy, was a four star general, 37 years in the military, commander in Iraq etc. RIght there is someone who is more qualified.

You're pathetically indebted to a bankrupt ideology.

Perhaps you could stop wasting time posting nonsensical hyperbole and do some profound inner searching to find out just whats wrong with you.

You kniw, do a personal inventory.

Unable to touch hagel? Did you not see the hearings?
Everyone of all ages ... right & left ... gave Hagel a big 2 thumbs down.jpg

WASHINGTON — Republican opposition to Chuck Hagel as the next defense secretary swelled from inside and outside the Senate Thursday as a former Senate colleague launched a campaign to block his nomination.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who served for a decade with Hagel, said his grassroots organization, Patriot Voices, will lead a nationwide campaign to stop Hagel from succeeding Leon Panetta as head of the Pentagon.

Although Hagel served in the Senate for two terms and was a member of the Foreign Relations and Intelligence panels, several Republicans and Democrats say he didn't build many close relationships and tended to chart his own course.

Santorum, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination last year, recently led a successful fight to defeat a U.N. treaty on the disabled, convincing several Senate Republicans to oppose ratification. He overcame such vital treaty supporters as McCain and former Sen. Bob Dole.....snip~

Rick Santorum Launches Effort To Defeat Chuck Hagel Nomination

Looks like he will need 60 to get past the Filibuster.....huh?

Of the 45 Senate Republicans, just 25 served with Hagel. Among the newer, more moderate members, Hagel is certain to face a tough time persuading Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., who has been at the forefront in pushing for unilateral sanctions against Iran and is a fierce proponent of Israel.

Do you think this Mope's face tells the story?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Friday dismissed criticism of Chuck Hagel's hesitant congressional testimony and insisted that it expects the Senate to confirm him as defense secretary.

One day after Hagel was roughed up in a grueling confirmation hearing, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Hagel did a "fine job" and the Obama administration would be stunned if Republicans tried to block the nomination of a decorated Vietnam combat veteran and former two-term GOP senator.

"The president believes Sen. Hagel will make an excellent secretary of defense and that he will be confirmed and he looks forward to working with Sen. Hagel in that position as we continue to advance our national security priorities," Carney told reporters.

Well we all know just how Obama like to spin things.....huh?

Hagel seemed ill-prepared under withering cross-examination from Senate Armed Services Committee Republicans in nearly eight hours of testimony. He was repeatedly pressed about past statements and votes on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons.

But Republican opposition grew on Friday as Sen. Roy Blunt, a member of the committee, announced that he would vote against Hagel. About a dozen Republicans have said they will oppose their former colleague and several others have indicated that they are likely to vote no.

Unable to elicit a simple response, McCain said the record should show that Hagel refused to answer. And he made it clear that he would have the final word — with his vote, which he said would be influenced by Hagel's refusal to answer yes or no.

"I think history has already made a judgment about the surge, sir, and you're on the wrong side of it," McCain told Hagel.

I'm sorry and I regret it," Hagel said. "On the use of 'intimidation,' I should have used 'influence,' I think would have been more appropriate.

I happen to think enlisted military personnel are every bit as qualified if not more qualified than a paper pushing general. Just my opinion.

Re: Hagel for SOD

Oh the irony, Hagel endorsed McCain in a prior GOP presidential nomination, and McCain said he would nominate him for Sec of Defense.

It's as if the conservative mind is a pingpong ball that just bounces from one discredited obstructionist position to the next, with no plan, no core, no values.

Old friends McCain and Hagel spar at hearing – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs
Sen. John McCain fired away at Cabinet nominee Chuck Hagel during his confirmation hearing Thursday on Capitol Hill, repeatedly interrupting his old friend and accusing him of refusing to answer direct questions.
The sharp exchange marked a years-long falling out between two long-time friends and colleagues. Thirteen years ago, McCain, then a presidential candidate, named Chuck Hagel as a man he'd like to see run the Defense Department. ...

Re: Hagel for SOD

Thanks.....Like I said I had not seen him say such. 13 years ago when he ran against Bush the first time. I think all that change when Hagel went with Obama over McCain or did not back his friend in 2008. Plus Hagel's wife is an Obama Supporter.

Hagel would be the only Republican in Obama's cabinet if confirmed. Course the only reason Obama choose him. Which had nothing to do with him being Qualified for the SOD. Was due to the fact that Hagel is out of the Box not only with Republican Senators but Democrats as well. Several Democrats have had go arounds with Hagel and don't care for him to much.

Still Hagel is on the defensive. Moreover why now.....would Team Obama criticize him after they just got done criticizing Republicans over their Response to his Nomination? One would think Obama would have come to the rescue. Not criticize Hagel for the way he responded to any questions.

But then the party that always puts themselves before their country.....the Democrats are now all in favor of him. Based solely on the fact that Obama choose him. None of them voicing any objections. Voting all in favor with a Republican who has been at odds with his own party is exactly what Obama was looking for. Now he might not get it.....but he will have put Republicans at odds with one another.

everything is not a conspiracy
i believe Obama nominated hagel because he thought he would make a good secdef; that he served during the cluster**** that was vietnam only adds to his understanding of what works and doesn't work in the military
it would have been very easy for hagel to fall in line with his republican cohort and embrace israel while pushing against iran while also cheering for that cluster**** that was the war in iraq. but he didn't. which indicates he is a stand up guy who thinks for himself. that quality is sorely missing in DC and is sorely needed in the DoD

Everybody in the bubble you live it perhaps. Everyone agrees with you on Hagel? We'll see.

The reference was to Hagel's performance ... which was surreal - in a bad way ... that's what everyone recognized. You thought it was good?

e.g.
" "It's somewhere between baffling and incomprehensible," a member of Mr. Obama's own team of advisers on Iran said on Thursday night when asked about Mr. Hagel's stumbling performance on the question during the all-day hearing. The worry was evident in the voice of the official, who would not speak on the record while criticizing the performance of the president's nominee. For those who question whether the no-containment cornerstone of the Obama approach to Tehran is for real, or just diplomatic rhetoric, Mr. Hagel clearly muddled the message, he said. "
