Newspaper sparks outrage for publishing names, addresses of gun owners

Re: Newspaper helps ensure safety of registered gun owners

woohoo.gif
They took it down.....even tho Coumo now knows who has guns in that area.

Am thinking if the Governor wanted to know who owns what in the Empire State he doesn't have to wait for the local paper to publish it, his people can go to the same place the newspaper did for that information.

I am a bit uncomfortable with the CCW list being published but apparently it is public information, not very well protected by law. (Makes me wonder about the politicians who wrote the laws to begin with)

I don't think the list makes the CCW holder any more or less vunerable to bad guys and FYI the 'gubmint' already has the list- it is THEIR list!

Well, they already have had homes burglarized and with the Perps admitting they went by the map. I think ABC or NBC did a whole write up about what those in Prison had to say about the Map and some that were already in locks ups waiting to go to trial. I believe they stated those homes with or without guns were now more vulnerable.

So to be clear, the Governor didn't need the list to know who the 'gun' owners are- check?

Now I researched the burglars with maps claim. I can't find burglarS as in multiple incidents, I have found breitbart reporting a very ardent Governor hater, state senator Gregory Ball claiming A unnamed burglar used the map. No details though, no ABC/NBC reports online, just good ol' Brietbart.

I wouldn't mind a link or two to your claim.

Now that does bring up an interesting point. It would appear, at least according to the 'facts' Brietbart and his like are now claiming, that firearm ownership doesn't deter burglars. The sign, 'Don't Beware of Dog, Beware of Smith and Wesson' is now be seen as an invite not a deterrent. :)

To be more clear than you could ever have possibly known or even conceived in thought.. Then there is those assault weapons sales that Cuomo talked about that no one has lists on. Then stolen weapons. Then the weapons of those that have become deceased. Must be those imaginary lists you thought you knew about that you think he has.

Guess your research must not have been to in depth either.....huh? Not surprising!

Burglars Hit Home of Gun Owner ID’d by Newspaper
The home of a gun owner, whose address was published by a New York newspaper, has been burglarized and a state lawmaker said it appears the burglars may have used the newspaper’s map to target the residence.

Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt,” Sen. Greg Ball said. The residence in White Plains, was identified in an interactive map that identified the names and addresses individuals who have gun permits. It was published by The Journal News — a Gannett Co. newspaper. The elderly homeowner, who legally owns weapons, was not at home at the time of the burglary. “The police are doing a full investigation,” the unidentified man told NewsDay. Police said it appears the burglars targeted the homeowner’s gun safe. The newspaper has come under intense national exposure after they published a list of residents who have gun permits.

Among the most vocal local opponents is Sen. Ball — who said the newspaper had put law-abiding citizens in danger. “The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” said Ball. “If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens.”

Ball is introducing legislation Monday to protect the names of New Yorkers who have legally obtained gun permits. “Former convicts have already testified to the usefulness of the asinine Journal News ‘gun maps’ yet the reckless editors are evidently willing to roll the dice, gambling with the lives of innocent local homeowners,” Ball said. The Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County said they plan to hold the newspaper accountable for any attacks on their residences of their 25,000 members.

Ball said the newspaper, whose parent company owns USA Today, is coddling terrorists. “The same elitist eggheads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators,” he said. “This is not about the Second Amendment; these bills are simply about commonsense and personal privacy. Publishing this information on a website, as we have evidently just witnessed in the recent attempted gun burglary, provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes.”

When Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant refused the paper's request for information on gun owners in his county, he argued that publishing the information "tells criminals who doesn't have a gun," and "gives a burglar or it gives a thief a map." It's unclear if criminals are using the map as a way to obtain firearms illegally or a guide to the homes where they're least likely to get shot (or ignoring it entirely), but for now everyone in Westchester and Rockland counties can worry that their home is a target. Somehow, we doubt that will lead to a more rational and informed debate on gun violence.....snip~

Looks like Putnam County Clerk, NY Cops and former convicts are all saying the same thing, that everyone in those areas that their homes are a Target. But you can go on about Brietbart all you want. To be VERY clear you are now dancing far away from your original statement, typical. Your original statement was attacking the newspaper for publishing a list that YOU claim the Governor had no access to... REALLY? How did the Newspaper get the information?

More typical denial. The three links are not to ABC and NBC like you claimed but Fox repeating almost verbatim the major part of the Breitbart piece.

To be VERY clear, the police have no concrete information the burglars targeted ONE house from the list, this is a rush to judgment politician attempting to use it as pushback. So much for wait and see what the FACTS are, difficult for you to imagine that ONE of the THOUSANDS of addresses listed was broken into? Couldn't be because the homeowner was an old dude, or a rather well off dude, or like clockwork always gone at a very reliable time.... nope HAS to be because he had firearms, but the burglars didn't bring a way to break into/haul off a gun safe??? It is New York, can't just stack your stash in the hall closet...

So to wrap this up, no proof the SINGLE burglary had ANYTHING to do with the map, and the body of ALL the articles is a rush to judgment right wing politician using it to attack his political opponent. ALL the articles use the ranting of Gregory Ball, who like many partisan hacks has NO proof to back his attack up with.

Except thru all your useless rhetoric for that fact that the Police said they the criminals targeted the gun safe in the house.. Seems the police know what the common sense is about the map targeting those areas. Just like the clerk said.

Wow, how low does the political position of progressives have to get to defend burglars, thieves....Pathetic.

Thieves ransacked a house that features on the gun map published by the Journal News, just days after another home on the list was also targeted.

Burglars broke into the house in New City, New York, on Wednesday and pried open two safes, before leaving with another one.

The criminals escaped with two handguns, two pistol permits, cash, savings bonds and jewelry. The firearms were in the stolen safe.

Wow, how low does the political position of progressives have to get to defend burglars, thieves....Pathetic.

I was going to say how convoluted some of severe partisans are. The links are vague meaningless conjecture at best, highly misleading all way around to include the last link's 'just days after map is published'... it was 3 weeks. Home burglary isn't an 'Ocean's 11' caper, it doesn't take 3 weeks to plan a simple home robbery!

Now to put the two burglaries into context. The two counties that had their handgun permits published are Rockland and Westchester, two of the richest counties in the nation. Rockland is 9th richest nationwide and Westchester the 2nd richest in the state of New York. Burglars know the counties well.....

According to recordpedia and the FBI crime stats a rough average of burglaries can be established for the 26 days following the map being published.

Approx 170

So it would appear the rant about targeted handgun owners is crushed by that fact alone. 1% of the burglaries in the 26 days following the publishing of that map were on a listed handgun owner. Piss poor targeting if you ask me...

Now lets look at the burglaries, one ransacked the entire house, broke into safes and stole one... the grand hall on weapons, a 45 and a 22 pistol the thieves couldn't have known past a wide assed guess was in the safe... I'd wager a NRA free tote bag the thieves took far more than just the one safe and it was a typical rather than 'gun' grabbing burglary.

The 70 year old's house looks more like a burglary stopped by a silent alarm, thieves play the odds and figure second floor windows are not wired. So too the quick response than the thieves only targeted the safe seems to be why not much was disturbed. Safes are not that hard to break into, they are not bank vaults. One of the thieves was caught again indicates a rapid response to the break-in.

Now I am not defending thieves so using that slur instead of facts is pathetic. :doh

Oh sure you are....Muddying up the waters is indeed a defense...And what the hell does the aggregate wealth of the counties have to do with anything? More slur against the wealthy as if they don't have any right to safety? Your arguments are laughable and predictable. The bottom line is that the 2nd amendment is clear, and upheld through Heller by the SCOTUS. So you have a real problem if you believe that the attempt to infringe on that right is going to be successful.

Journal News map listed guns, permits stolen from New City home, cops say.....

image.jpg

Two handguns and two pistol permits were stolen from the New City home of a man whose name and address are listed on the website of a local newspaper as possessing gun permits, police said.
The thieves ransacked the house Wednesday night, breaking into two safes on the home's third floor and stealing a third safe
. The guns were in the stolen safe, police said.

Clarkstown police said they had no evidence the burglary was connected to the controversial map.

The burglary comes less than a week after a White Plains homeowner -- who also was listed on the Journal News website as having gun permits -- arrived home to find his home burglarized, with jewelry missing and an attempted break-in of his gun safe. The thieves were not successful, and no guns were stolen.

The guns that were stolen in New City included a .45-caliber Colt revolver and a .22-caliber Iver Johnson. Cash, U.S. savings bonds and jewelry were also stolen.
The homeowner's stolen pistol permits were for Rockland and Orange counties
.

The head of the White Plains Police Benevolent Association, Robert Riley, has been one of the fiercest critics of the Journal News map, saying it puts the lives of police and ordinary residents in potential danger.....snip~

Muddying the waters vs sticking one's head in the sand to avoid reasoning?

Rather than attempting to play the 'wealthy are victims' card- try a bit of reason. These two counties are among the wealthiest in the nation. Very tempting to criminals for quite some time. Approx 170 burglaries during the 26 days since the map was published and there was a grand total of-

a grand total of 2 burglaries that match the map!

Now if you want a real discussion on muddy water- YOU attempt to muddy the debate by making a totally untrue claim I don't want homeowners to have the right to home defense.

SHOW US ALL WHERE I SAID THAT!

You see the whine over the map being used to target hand gun owners is as false as a hooker's smile so you retreat back to 'infringing' the 2ndA which was not ANY part of this discussion. It was all about the baseless whine by a NY state politician claiming 2 out of 170 burglaries are 'map based' when the facts, as little as anyone knows right now, fails to support his rant.

So rather than discuss the map as a burglary tool initial debate, you attempt to open a new debate by claiming I want to deny home defense with handguns, or even ownership of a handgun period. You drag Heller into this as if i think that ruling was wrong. You throw a cherry ontop with a baseless attempt to drag a 'class warfare' charge into this.

Muddy waters indeed...

Oh please....I understand that the only card that progressives have is to lie about what others say, and use emotional appeal (a fallacy BTW) to further their agenda which they try to keep hidden, largely because in the light of day would never be approved of by the majority of rational people in this country, but get a grip will ya?

I see, so when you have absolutely NO facts to back your rant up with you claim you can see into the soul of a man you never met?

You seem to be the only one using an emotional appeal- rather than debate the map as a burglary tool issue you ramp up the- class warfare, wrapping yourself up in the Constitution, you always lie- I never do muck.

So for the record you have NO, I say again, ZERO proof of any of the crap you accuse me of. You refuse to discuss the initial post of the map was used to commit burglary. And I have a hidden agenda?

I'm not the one needing to get a grip!

I am a wounded veteran. I am a multiple firearms owner. Member of the NRA. Since the age of 16 I have hunted 2 and 4 footed critters every year, sometimes I was hunted back. I support the 2nd A. I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. I have no hidden agenda, I have stated my opinion on restrictions vs infringement repeatedly...

but none of that has dick to do with the wild and baseless claim 2 out of 170 burglaries are because a map of handgun owners was published.

Just more Muddy Waters without the guitar riff....
