G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes[W: 414]

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

There is a timeline issue. Some things can be improved by an infusion of cash. I can remember having 10 training bullets per soldier per quarter. One does not remain proficient with one's weapons firing three rounds per month.

Let's see. What is the total budget today? This was interesting: "Military spending: The military budget of the United States during FY 2011 was approximately $740 billion in expenses for the Department of Defense (DoD), $141 billion for veteran expenses, and $48 billion in expenses for the Department of Homeland Security, for a total of $929 billion.[37] The U.S. defense budget (excluding spending for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Homeland Security, and Veteran's Affairs) is around 5% of GDP. Adding these other costs places defense spending between 6% and 7% of GDP. "

Our government is spending 25% of GDP. Defense is 20-24% of the budget not 60%. You are uninformed or given your lean you may be using liberal math, a form of math I am uncomfortable with.

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

Three thoughts...

1. Speaker Boehner had wanted the House to adopt his "Plan B," not because he felt that it was an optimal plan--it fell far short of the deficit reduction required to be credible--but to give him leverage in the negotiations with the White House.

2. With the House Speaker unable to muster the votes for his plan, the White House's bargaining position has been strengthened. It is now reasonable to ask whether the Speaker can deliver meaningful Republican support for any bipartisan agreement that would include spending and tax-related provisions.

In that context, the White House may calculate that a deal that draws primarily Democratic support and a handful of Republican support to clear the House--probably more focused on the tax side than the kind of deal that Speaker Boehner would accept--is preferable. By preferable, I mean that the White House would perceive such a package as being more closely-aligned with its revenue-side preferences. It would need to give up less than would otherwise be the case.

3. An outcome that falls short of a credible package (and a credible package must generate sufficient fiscal savings and enjoy broad bipartisan support) is likely to offer a fresh indication to the major credit ratings agencies that the U.S. is not capable of the kind of quality governance required to address its tough challenges. In such a context, suboptimal decisions would be more likely than optimal ones and issues of sustainability of fiscal consolidation would arise. Hence, at best, the ratings agencies would maintain current negative outlooks, but there would be a risk of one or more ratings downgrades, especially if the package proves minimalist in nature. Negative action by multiple ratings agencies might trigger the kind of interest rate response that did not occur when S&P downgraded the U.S. to AA+, hence some uptick in rates above what could otherwise be expected might take place.

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

Looks like the bohner screwed the pooch this time. What the hell, its only a speed bump that the media has labeled a fiscal cliff anyway.

<WASHINGTON – House Republican leaders abruptly pulled their fallback tax bill from the floor Thursday night, conceding that they did not have the votes to pass it.>

< The struggle to win Republican support for a measure that would allow income taxes to rise on a sliver of the top one percent of taxpayers telegraphed a grave decision for the speaker.>

< House Republican leadership aides made clear that if the bill passes, the speaker believes the next move will have to come from Senate Democrats and the president. Senate Democrats could simply take up and pass the House bill or amend it more to their liking and send it back to the House.>

Counting the days until Boehner is no longer Speaker of the House...... 10.... 9.... 8....

That's discretionary spending, not total spending. Mandatory spending accounts for the majority of the federal budget (approximately 60%).

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

LMMFAO!!!

House Republicans revolted this evening and rejected Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B” which would have extended the Bush tax cuts for everyone making $1 million or less, among other provisions. According to Boehner, he canceled a scheduled vote on his plan after it became clear he could not get enough support from Republicans for it to pass. The House is now in recess until after Christmas. <snip> BREAKING: Republicans Revolt, Reject Boehner's 'Plan B' | ThinkProgress

So, Plan B was aborted then?

Well, not sure "aborted" is the best word for it. I mean, it being Republican and all.

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

One branch of Govt. is not supposed to govern. The House's duty is to find compromises that can move the country forward. They have failed at their duty again. They will be voted out in 2014.

Whats the Senates duty?

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

No, we will not be "defensless". Join the military and learn something will you?

That's pretty funny. You liberals have been preaching Unilateral Disarmament in the face of our enemies for at least fifty years.

Other than your opinion, point me towards what you regard as proof that liberals have been preaching "Unilateral Disarmament "for at least fifty years.

Yep, because ANY budget cuts to defense will leave us defenseless

As for "liberals" like me, I served for 20 years in the Army. How about you?

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

I knew you would propagate your lie through omission of the bulk of the budget. Nice.

I selected the percentage of GDP route because it makes it so much harder for people like you to lie. Not impossible. Clearly because you still boldly did so.

Plan B underperformed on the free market.

Wait..are you saying there no libs in the army?

You'll have to show where I came even close to saying that.

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

Hmmm looks like we should cut the military by 25% according to the chart and that might help pay down those bills.

A good start would be closing down a few European bases, then take a look at the the hundreds of billions of dollars we spend on aircraft like the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter,Which cost about $137 million a bird.:peace

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

Although it is going to be a train wreck of pain for those like me in the middle income levels, sadly I think you're right.

Why? After the new session begins, the Senate will pass a new middle class tax cut and send it to the House for approval.

Re: G.O.P. Leaders in House Pull Tax Bill, Citing Lack of Votes

Yes and the house Gop will whine like babies. Honestly until the Republican Party severs it ties to the teabaggers they will have these problems. They have done nothing for this country and never will.

When you put liberals in quotation marks, I took that to be mocking sarcasm...Was I wrong?

Yes and the house Demo's will whine like babies should Obama budge at all. Honestly until the Demo Party servers it ties to the libtard progressives they will have these problems. They have done nothing for this country and never will.

If Republicans are smart they would vote present on everything from here on out....Worked for Barry.

Boehner didn't screw the pooch by rejecting a ridiculous offer to prevent some fiscal cliff that was created by the Democrats.

He should have walked away weeks ago.

This is Obama's economy.

Absolutely right...Boehner should introduce a bill to lower the bottom three tax tiers, and keep the top two the same. Pass it send it to the senate, then tell both Obama a Reid to suck on that.
