I recall that buffoon Senator from Alabama, Howell Heflin, asking him, Bork, about his beard during the SC confirmation hearings. He also asked Bork if he was an atheist. Two questions that would never be asked on an application for 7-11. That Lion (Lush) of the Senate, Ted Kennedy also berated Bork minutes after his nomination became known.

I will forever be grateful that the nation's biggest supporter of warantless seizure never made it to the Supreme Court.

The nominee should have been Pozner.

How about a moment of respectful silence--or at least allowing the body to cool before criticizing?

The only reason anyone cares about Bork is that he was a divisive nominee for the Supreme Court. To talk about his record and express disagreement with it is perfectly reasonable imo. If you step into the public light, you should expect criticism of your record. Einzige did not engage in ad homs, which I agree would be off base in an obit, much like the lush comments about Kennedy, immediately after his death.

I'm pretty sure I read his book back then. Never did like the guy.

Kennedy was a lush. He only ran his car off a bridge into a river allowing a woman to die because he was a lush coward.

Apparently Kennedy thought this namesake (and an attempt to hide the fact he was a lush) was more more important than a human life...

People can disagree with ones politics all they like but what Kennedy did was cowardice. The report of the incident made it quite clear Teddy Boy didn't even try to save that woman (Mary Jo Kopechne).

With that said, "Teddy Boy" gets what he deserves... He was nothing more than an elitist punk who road his brothers (and father) coattails into a position of power via namesake.

I love that a disagreement on policy with Bork has turned into personal attacks on Kennedy. So pathetic (and I'm not even a fan of Teddy).

IMO, whether you favored Bork for SCOTUS or not, the way he was treated was most disgraceful.

He opposed the Supreme Court's one man, one vote decision on legislative apportionment.

He wrote an article opposing the 1964 civil rights law that required hotels, restaurants and other businesses to serve people of all races.

He opposed a 1965 Supreme Court decision that struck down a state law banning contraceptives for married couples. There is no right to privacy in the Constitution, Bork said.

And he opposed Supreme Court decisions on gender equality, too.

Yeah, we dodged a regressive bullet on that one getting into the SCOTUS.

Common sense would agree with that position. Private enterprise should in no way be obligated to do business with anyone they choose not to. If public funds are involved then it is another matter. Once the state determines what you, as a business person can do in offering your services or goods, you no longer are involved in free enterprise.

i disagree with many of his opinions, but RIP anyway.

May Judge Bork rest in peace.

Having had the privilege of meeting him while in Washington, I can certainly attest that he was a first-rate intellectual. One need not agree with his ideas, judicial philosophy, or writing to recognize the caliber of his intellect. Moreover, I don't believe it is constructive to personalize disagreement on ideas. The limits of such disagreement should stop with the ideas, not contaminate personal relationships. Otherwise, one's personal relationships wind up more sterile and less interesting than could otherwise be the case. Diversity of thought can be intellectually stimulating. Personalizing disagreement over ideas deprives one of access to such diversity of thought.

nah
this seems like an ideal moment to exercise free speech
bork earned and deserves no such respect

Same here. I mean holy hell, siding with a corporation that women in their workplace get sterilized or be fired?... Good gawd. What kind of sense is that?

too much of an ideologue to be considered for SCOTUS. i don't have any desire to speak ill of the dead, though. it has pretty much all been said already.

Meh... I don't hate him and I hope he R.I.P. Still think his policies were nuts.

My issue with Bork was not the way he was treated, although I felt he could have been treated better. I agree that he should not have been confirmed to the Supreme Court because, as a member of the Nixon administration, he was the one who fired Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, during the infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" that ended the investigation (temporarily) into Nixon's criminal activities surrounding Watergate. So, instead of upholding the Constitution, as he had sworn to do, Bork assisted in helping the Nixon administration obstruct justice. And for that reason, rather than reasons of ideology, it was proper to shoot down his nomination to SCOTUS.

Always liked Bork. Thought he got a politically motivated raw deal during the SC nomination process....

IMO, he should've been in the jail cell right next to G. Gordon Liddy for that.

For the privileged, there is no jail, and sometimes they even get million dollar bonuses for breaking the law.

Or even put up for nomination to the SCOTUS. Amazing.

Exactly what law did Bork violate?
