This is terrible news. This guy is a gutsy and smart journalists in every sense of the word. This guy really does the tough hard work. Man I hope he and his partner there are alright. You rarely see people put themselves into their work as much as he does.

Famed NBC Correspondent Missing In Syria

Turkish media is reporting that veteran journalist Richard Engel, NBC's chief foreign correspondent and Middle East bureau chief, and his Turkish colleague Aziz Akyavaş are currently missing in Syria.

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports that Engel and Akyavaş haven't been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning.

i hope that he's ok. i will admit that i am frequently annoyed at the level of danger NBC allows him to be right in the middle of. i'm sure he believes that reporting the real story from the inside is more important than anything else. however, he has been in some very risky situations that i would never greenlight if i were NBC program director.

I'll be praying for this him and his partner. Lord knows the level of atrocities Al Qaeda and the Syrian gov't are capable of. I just hope he is not finding that out first hand.

Since the reports are out of Turkey and not 30Rock, hopefully he has just gone dark. Wouldn't surprise me if he came out the other side with an interview of Assad or someone of that ilk.

Yes, hope he gets out ok...same thing happened to Fox reporter, Steve Centani last year.

He's safe and out of Syria now.

From NBC.com:

NBC News’ Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and members of his network production team were freed from captors in Syria after a firefight at a checkpoint on Monday, five days after they were taken prisoner, NBC News said early Tuesday.

“After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country,” the network said in a statement.

glad that he's ok.

hopefully as a welcome home present, NBC will give him an anchor job somewhere and stop putting him in places where he's almost certain to get killed.

What's wrong with blonde female correspondents? They're my favorite kind of correspondent.

Thank God. Now I want to punch him.

I appreciate the update don!

I was running this morning when I heard Engel and the others were freed and safe. That helped to make it a great run. The guy does one heck of a great job.

I'm very relieved to hear this. It must have been a week of hell for them all, and I'm extremely glad they are safe.

I was very happy to learn this news. Too often such stories have had tragic endings in recent years.

The guy doesn't trash the M.E. I think he's got some extremely big street cred over there. Probably what got him out.
