(Reuters) - The planned deployment of NATO Patriot missiles along Turkey's border with Syria could lead to a "world war" that would threaten Europe as well, Iran's military chief of staff was quoted as saying on Saturday.

General Hassan Firouzabadi, the Iranian armed forces chief, said Iranwanted its neighbor Turkey to feel secure but called for NATO not to deploy the Patriots in its easternmost member state, which also bordersIran.
"Each one of these Patriots is a black mark on the world map, and is meant to cause a world war," Firouzabadi said, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency. "They are making plans for a world war, and this is very dangerous for the future of humanity and for the future of Europe itself."

Is there anymore doubt that Iran is not deterred by US/NATO anymore? Still think that sanctions are working with this destabilizing force of mad men at the helm of Iran?

Our ME policy under Obama is a huge failure.

Iran isnt afraid of NATO and NATO isnt afraid of Iran, both have too many bargaining options and nothing will happen because of this.

Did anyone bother to ask the dude between whom this world war would be fought?

Who, exactly, would be his allies?

Oh, so we have to wait until the crazy nation does something? That's silly...We have a tragedy in CT with a shooting, and all of the sudden our right to own a gun should be taken away, but let Iran threaten world war, and we must wait....priorities man priorities....

It's very easy for Iran to say they'll act militarily against the U.S. and our Middle Eastern allies.

Seriously doubt that Iran has balls brass enough to actually do it.

Sabre-rattling non-issue.

You're probably right on this sub issue sam, let's hope anyway, right?

Iran's hysterical reaction is not a surprise. Iran is doing what it can to try to deter military action in response to its ongoing illicit nuclear activities. It perceives the limited deployment of Patriot missiles as a development that will hinder its ability to strike back, even as the missiles are aimed at protecting Turkey against missiles that originate in Syria. Reduced striking capacity, it figures, would undermine its ability to deter military action.

Don't panic. I mean really, are you that terrified of all of this? Calm down and stop the sky is falling routine. Nothing in the world is gained by you going around and trying to stir crap up.

Me? Listen dear, I am but a mere 50 year old truck driver from South Cakalacky trying to make sense of the world. I am flattered that you think I have that much power...I guess I should pick up the phone and let Hillary know to stand down, I over reacted....

You don't have to rattle the white house gate to run around in a panic.

Who's panicking? I am sippin' my ice cold coke, watching Pittsburgh lose, and typing on the comp....All in all I am totally calm....Maybe it is you that is over reacting...

I never said that, but we have already done something; embargo.

That's silly...
What im saying is that both nations have some interest with one another, the US has an interest in Iran not getting nuclear weapons, and Iran has an interest in acquiring getting a nuclear weapon so the US wont invade. The US does not want to invade and Iran does not want the US to invade and both have bargaining powers, so therefor its going to be a long drawn out negotiations and various small actions. Polisci 101 baby.

What does CT have to do with anything?

What do you mean? Iran releases inflammatory fear mongering statements about a defensive missile system on their periphery is evidence that they aren't afraid of NATO? I think quite clearly Iran fears NATO and the Western powers, they are just agitating for the most advantageous position they can get in the region and are frustrated to see their position in Syria crumble. They also probably have a fair notion of what would be a trip-wire for actual Western intervention against their country, and press statements like this aren't it. It rarely is.
