Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Connecticut victims' funerals

I'm confused. Are you for or against exterminating the WBC?

Do you think Obama should wipe them or should he not?

I'm very against the WBC. I don't think Obama (or any president) should do anything about them. That's not his job.

I think the media should stop giving the WBC attention, and they will go away. WBC is the exact same thing as a little kid who calls you names in grade school. Give them attention and they'll keep at it, ignore them and they'll go away.

It has just been announced that Obama will be attending the funeral.

What do you think the secret service will do with the WBC?????

Maybe the tea party will follow up shortly after to protest the teachers salaries.

You compare WBC with the Tea Party? I'm no fan of the TP but that's a little over the top.

How many times have the teacher's unions gone on strike for more security and not more wages?

One has got to love this WBC BS. I heard about them somewhere in the mid 90s. this was way back when the only people they really protested were gay people. Low and behold they did not make much money. Most of their money came from anti-gay donors. No one paid attention much to them because no one cared if they protested faggots. One has to wonder why has the WBC changed their tactics to go after non-homosexual people?

The answer is attention and money. They get more lawsuits against them if they protest non-homosexual people and call them gay. they also get more media attention because people actually care about straight people being treated like gays. I find it amazing that now that the WBC has targetted straight people all of a sudden they need to be stopped and counter protested. really, what is the worst these people end up doing? Saying some army guys are gay, or that we are all going to die because we accept gay marriage? Frankly if the biggest concern you have when you are burrying your kids is someone who never new them calling them gay or saying they deserved to die because we have gay marriage, well you are worrying about the wrong thing.

It would seem my sympathy meter for straight people being called gay is out of juice. maybe if gay wasn't a huge insult to so many straight people they would not be so offended because someone says gay to them. This outrage also tends to tell me that those people who say gay is not being used as a homophobic slur, but yet get offended if someone implies they might suck a dick, are feeding us a line of BS. Anyway, do with them what you will, while they are protesting your dead kids they are not bothering any faggots. Go good homo uses, we get a moment of peace while the straights bitch at each other.

Got it in one. That's their livelihood.

Which just proves that the people hitting them aren't hitting them hard enough.

You can send them back to OH to my area.

They attempted to hit a local soldier's funeral a year or so ago.

Never even got out of the hotel parking lot.....

They are never coming back, I can guarantee that!!!

Gay rights in the mid-90s wasn't the trendy rights issue that it is today, so your three paragraphs of selective indignation is misplaced.

These nutjobs need to be tear-gassed next time they protest at a god damn funeral. Seriously.
You are much kinder than me about this, I think people should lob a molotov or two into the whole "congregation" and fry that scum. It would at least allow them to acclimate to the extreme heat they are in for in the afterlife.

I suppose living in a Country where you can say absolutely anything, and it comes under the banner of 'freedom of speech'; then you reap what you sow.

You can't "say anything" in the U.S. there are limits. These limits though are more along the lines of endangermeant than anything else. There must be a clear and present danger, imminent threat, defamation, or otherwise non protected speech issue. Just "being hateful" is protected.

It would be interesting to see some stats, on where and when, citizens were charged over such issues. For me, that looks easily open for abuse.

It looks to be quite a complex issue

Words cannot describe how much I despise the man at the center of this family cult. One of the sons managed to break free and has shared stories of the awful abuse (which included being hit with a mattock) and brainwashing that took place. If you want to find an example of evil, you need look no further than Fred Phelps.

Oh, and what makes the groups's views more disturbing than the usual conservative Christian approach to homosexuality (which is also wrong) is that they don't even believe that the people they scream about can be saved. Their view is that gays are doomed to Hell and there is no hope of salvation regardless of any repentance. Basically, they are going, " Haha, you're going to Hell." They even keep track of how long certain deceased "sodomites" and their "enablers" have been in Hell. Very ugly people.

What do they gain from this kind of behavior? They've been doing it for years, and I can't find the gain -- unless it's to piss off people enough to get them to take a swing at them, and then they sue the person who hit them.

They are actually a family former law firm and what they gain are the lawsuits the file against those who try to limit their free speech.

Fred Phelps is a Con Man

he most telling tale about all of Phelp's behavior is the schedule he keeps, and the company he keeps as well. The parties sometimes split up and go to two separate state funerals to maximize the profitability of them. There are, at maximum, twelve members to the party. They never stay more than thirty minutes (I assume they realize that someone will do something to them the MOMENT they come out of the vans, and really, after that, they get their camera shots to cause the outrage for the next stop, and then they move on) to maximize their profits, because time is money, and really, they're not interested in the message, because they're just interested in the lawsuit.

See? They don't believe this stuff. If they did, they wouldn't have come to Coretta Scott King's funeral. Because in their doctrine, they don't believe that G-d hates black people who tried to promote Christianity. So why were they there? They were there to make a buck when someone slipped up. They were there to petition the police department for a right to protest, and if they didn't get it, take them to court over it.

Basically, Phelps is playing the Ken Lay, Karl Rove, "Smartest Man in the Room" game where he is willing to do anything (if it be lying or stealing, or telling you God hates you) to make himself rich and powerful. This is his scheme, and admittedly, it's clever, but just downright evil to promote so much hatred in the world.

The irony with their beliefs is that believe they are the only ones going to heaven.

In reality, the opposite is true.

Their intense hate mirrors no bible that I have ever read - they truly do not follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

One method to stop this has been employed in the past.

It is to get a list of those who plan on participating, getting there phone numbers and have folks from all over the world call them. Call them in support,
Say that you agree with what the protest and you and your friends want to all call to offer support. If you find out they will not be attending then you will refuse to call them again.

aside from the outrage I feel over people who are so empathetically bankrupt and who are able to hide under the first amendment, my question is this : why are they still able to call themselves Baptists? can anyone just start a church and call it Baptist? Baptists don't believe in what this monster Phelps is doing, I'm sure.

Phelps and his spawn love the attention and will announce that they will be protesting at a Marine's funeral and get folks stirred up and then not show. The solution is not to give them the attention they crave, but how do we do this?

As best as I can tell following the article back to the twitter account is that they are of the opinion that God is punishing Connecticut for supporting gay marriage, not anything particular to the children per se, though I cleaned up their language in translation.

If their argument is that God punishes gay marriage by having kids killed, then they should be picketing God, not kids.

This is just over the top. It must not be allowed.

I am struggling not to lose my temper just thinking about the unbelieveable callousness of it.
