26 reported killed in Newtown, Conn., school shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, a 24-year-old male identified by CNN as Ryan Lanza, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle and two semi-automatic handguns.

Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.

Parents flooded to Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, looking for their children in the wake of the shooting. Students were told to close their eyes by police as they were led from the building.

A photo taken by The Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.

Students and staff were among the victims, state police Lt. Paul Vance said a brief news conference. He also said the gunman was dead inside the school, but he refused to say how people were killed.

Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way, said the gunman apparently had two guns.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that police were searching a location in New Jersey in connection with the shootings. That official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

The boy told him a teacher went out to check on the noise, came back in, locked the door and had the kids huddle up in the corner until police arrived.

"There's no words," Wilford said. "It's sheer terror, a sense of imminent danger, to get to your child and be there to protect him.".....snip~

Is it time to talk about gun control now? This is getting ridiculous. We never find the time to talk about gun control. These sort of things don't happen in England, and they have very strong gun control laws. The NRA needs to get out of the way and let the conversation begin.

Ell it is gonna be about 5 seconds before a conservative claims that they better buy guns as this means liberals will want to take them away or a liberal coming in here and posting that they should take them away.

I won't though, I will merely point out that justice cannot be served, killing the man of he is still alive won't bring back the children. You can't even reach an eye for an eye style justice unless you can kill him 26 times..... That is what I find most frustrating about events like this, there isnt really a proper resolution to it, just senseless pain for its own sake.

A White House spokesman said Friday that the shooting rampage at a Connecticut school saddened President Barack Obama as a father, but that "today's not the day" for a discussion about possible gun control measures to be taken in response to the massacre.

"Today's not ... a day to engage in the usual Washington policy debates," press secretary Jay Carney told reporters. "That day will come, but today's not that day."

The gunman has been identified as Ryan Lanza, 24, of New Jersey. A dead body has also been found in his home, officials said. Sources said Lanza was armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet-proof vest when he opened fire in the elementary school.

Among the dead was the gunman's mother, found in the school, sources told ABC News......snip~

When is the right time to talk about gun control? It's an honest question. Can you answer that? We have got to talk about it sometime, and it has to be before this happens again and again. How many innocent lives have to be lost before we start the conversation? I wish we had talked about it and acted before this happened. Maybe we can get it done before the next time sweet and innocent lives are lost.

These guys generally seem to do so emotionally and on a suicide pact. So I don't think the death penalty would have any effect on them.

I think some of us started talking about yesterday with Chicago and Illinois tossing out Conceal and Carry.

Just what are you to do with someone who is some evil lil shiznit in a school with defenseless children and adults? How do you stop such an individual from causing harm to others?

You're still living in a fantasy world where you believe that the government can disarm the entire populace. The government has spent decades and billions of dollars fighting against illegal drugs, and they are more prevalent than ever. The criminals will always have guns, the question is, why should law abiding citizens not have the ability to protect themselves against these armed criminals?

I am getting conflicting reports on that they also found his father dead. Looks like he went to kill his mother who works in the school or was there for some reason. Some are saying the body found in NJ is his Father.

the most important reason we have established a justice system and law rules is that we have to protect the innocent ones and their rights..

Instead of claiming the shooter was evil, lets take a look at the shooters mental state. Perhaps if we had already had health care implemented, the sick individual who took these inocent lives would have gotten the mental health care he obviously needed and that would have prevented such a horrible situation. We have to address these problems. We can't just claim people like the shooter are evil and we can't do anything to prevent this sort of thing. These things will continue to happen over and over agian until we address the problems and come up with common sense solutions.
The GOP are against health care for all and gun control. I would like to know why.

I am not talking about an all out ban on guns. I am talking about gun control. I am not dillusional in thinking that it will prevent all gun crimes, but when a man can order thousands of rounds of amo on line and multiple simi atuo riffles and enter a movie theater and kill in mass in just a few seconds, something is obviously wrong here. That should have raised a few red flags. However, we have no laws preventing someone from stock pilling weapons and amo that are designed to kill mass amounts of people. If those laws were in place, we act on situations when these red flags come up. I believe in the right of citizens to own guns, but it is time to start the conversation. That is the first step.

What would've happened if a few people in that theater were carrying? I'm willing to bet the damage would've been far less severe. Just as there is easy illegal access to drugs, there will always be illegal access to murder weapons. All you're doing is making it harder for responsible citizens to defend themselves.

That situation was chaos. There probably would have been more innocent lives lost because someone who isn't trained to deal with a situation where one gunman is mowing people down with a simi automatic weapon could accidentally kill innocent people while trying to take down the gunman. I worked in law enforcement for years, and it's not easy for trained people to calmly calculate all the factors involved in taking down a gunman. Citizens who are not trained to deal with these situations can cause more harm than good. Besides, I am not talking about an all out ban on weapons. Why do people like you assume that when someone wants to talk about gun control assume it means gun ban.
Saying we can or should do nothing to try and prevent these horrible situations is insane.

I'd love to prevent these situations, I'm just saying that the solution isn't more gun control. The solution is allowing people to defend themselves.

Let's say for instance, you walked into a room of turkeys, closing the door behind you. You raise your weapon, and slowly and calmly can shoot one by one while they scramble. Let's say then in another scenario, you walk into a room of lions, closing the door behind you. In which scenario do you believe you would be more successful?

Because Healthcare is not a right and the right to defend yourself IS.

Healthcare is a responsibility. Gun control is seeking to usurp the ability of someone to defend themselves from others. Gun control ensures that the only people that are carrying are criminals. Why is the gun violense so bad in Chicago when they have gun control?

I would agree tentatively that pychiatric care may have helped. But even the best healthcare cant always predict when someone will have a psychotic break that allows them to engage in this sort of behavior.

The problem with a free society is that its not very neat and its not very controlled, but people are free to make their own choices. Unfortunately some of those choices are so horrific that we turn away from our principles and seek to control what others do, when something like this is both hard to predict and hard to prevent.

LOL If you've ever tried to talk about gun control on the Gun Control Forum you'd quickly know the answer to your question. The gun nut trolls will you shout you down and make any rational discussion about it impossible.

Thats funny, I was going to say that about how you post on this entire board.

We do allow people to deend themselves. People can purchase simi automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of amo on line. We have hardly no gun control laws as it is now. Allowing people to defend themselves by owning weapons hasn't solved the problem. Obviously, your solution hasn't been working.

There is another thread about the Conn. shooting and I think it says it all.

WOuld be nice but will never happen.

Damn Shame.

When will it end and when will the gunnies realize the futility of their position.
