Good idea. I made one comment in this thread. I'm done.

    Moderator's Warning:
26 reported killed in Newtown [W:72/89]This is not the place to debate gun control. We have a forum for that and this discussion should take place there. Having said that, let's everyone calm down and stick to the topic - which is a tragedy where young children lost their lives. Civility please.
Welfare (Food Stamps, WIC, etc...) are not entitlements. They are taxpayer funded handouts and shouldn't be called entitlements at all. Social Security and Veteran's benefits are 'Entitlements' because the people receiving them are entitled to them. They were earned and paid for by the recipients.

No, people talk about how liberals want to ban guns and conservatives want to arm everyone. No one really talks about solutions to our problems. We need to have a real conversation about how to solve the problem of gun violence in this country. The first step is admitting we have one, the second step is talking about solutions and then we should get some laws in place that solve the problems. We have been dancing around the subject for decades.

Sure when the liberals are willing to address "violence" not just "gun violence".

They're going to happen. We will NEVER prevent them entirely. We can certainly make efforts to decrease their likelihood, but we'd likely have to sacrifice a crap load of our freedoms to do so. Even other countries with strict gun laws and UHC deal with unthinkable tragedies. Bombs, serial killers, attacks with other weapons, rapes, mutilations, robberies...it'll still happen.
Law preventing people from purchasing thousands of rounds of amo would have stopped the Aurora shooter. On another note, I realize we can't stop all gun violence, but that is no reason to stop trying. We can and do stop some terrorist plots, so why can't we stop some gun violence? We don't have to give up our freedoms to do this. There are reasonable common sense ways to approach this issue. In many parts of Europe, there are some violent crimes that are so rare it's worth taking notice of how those contries opporate. Lets take sex crimes for one example. Europe has virtually no sex crimes. Maybe it's time to learn why and apply what they are doing. Gun violence is hardly heard of in Canada and many parts of Europe. We can learn from these countries. Lets face it, our gun laws have become more laxed over the last few decades, and it's the gun lobbiests that have made that happen. We can't continue to let the NRP dictate our gun control laws.

That doesn't mean gun shows are a safe place to be. That means the crazies are sane enough to realize the gun nuts will put a zillion holes in them if they even try.....lol. Maybe we should start having gun shows in our schools to keep our kids safe. SOmehow, that seems to be an odd solution.

laws would have stopped the aurora shooter? The only law that would have stopped the aurora shooter would have been the elimination of the law that made the theater a gun free zone. The killer in this latest tragedy apparently killed his own mother and then himself. tell me what law's proposed punishment would have deterred a guy who had already decided to die?

I agreed with the gun control people that Heston was being a jerk, and I am pro gun. But right now I believe that some of the gun control people are the ones being jerks.

I won't shut up, just ignore me. I am angry that young children are now dead because we never talk about this. This is the first time I have brought up gun control in any forum, but it effected me in such a way that I felt it's now way past time to bring up the subject and I feel we need to talk about it until we are blue in the face and laws are in place to keep our children safe from gun violence. IN a week from now, people will move on and not talk about it or do anything to prevent the next one.

bad things happen sometimes and no matter what we want, there is no solution.

26 reported killed in Newtown, Conn., school shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, a 24-year-old male identified by CNN as Ryan Lanza, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle and two semi-automatic handguns.

Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students some crying, some holding hands were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.
I am devestated by this horrific act of this young man. There are no words to explain it. I was even touched by Obama and his statement. I feel so bad for the parents of these yong children. God bless these children and may they rest in peace.
