26 reported killed in Newtown [W:72/89]

I agree with you 100%. We need to improve our background checks by including a mental test. We require police officers to pass a mental evaluation before we give them guns. I am not against gun ownership of responsible citizens. The key is to determine who is responsibie enough to own a deadly weapon.

This is the missing link in the entire process but because a well done behavioral stress test takes so long to do the NRA will never ever go for it they want guns in the hands of people as soon as possible. Damn logic or reason.

Unless one has been living under a rock, nearly everyone knows that gun control has been one of the top political footballs of the past decade and beyond. It is debated constantly on cable news, during every election and every time someone who isn't a gangbanger or criminal gets shot. Here at DP there is a complete sub-forum dedicated to nothing but Gun Control, available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Dragging it into a thread mourning a national tragedy before the bodies are cool smacks of tasteless, tacky, and disrespectful political opportunism, IMO.

Yes I know about the gun forum. And I agree that some decorum is fundamental, but my question was an honest one and I restate it.

NEWTOWN, CT - The Sandy Hook school principal and another staffer were killed after lunging at a gunman who forced his way inside to begin a deadly shooting spree, the regional school superintendent said Saturday.

The principal, Dawn Hochsprung, 47, and school psychologist Mary Sherlach, 56, died along with 4 other adults and 20 children in the second deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The alleged shooter, 20-year old Adam Lanza, was found dead at the scene, and his mother, Nancy Lanza, was discovered dead at their home.

Newtown school superintendent Janet Robinson told reporters that the two educators and other staff members had put themselves in harms way to protect children once it became clear the school was under siege.

"The teachers were really, really focused on saving their students," Robinson said.....snip~

Police find "good evidence" on motive for Connecticut school massacre

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Investigators assembled "some very good evidence" to explain what drove a 20-year-old gunman to slaughter 20 children and six adults at an elementary school, police said on Saturday, a day after one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history shattered a small Connecticut town.

The attacker, identified by law enforcement sources as Adam Lanza, opened fire on Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, which teaches children aged 5 to 10. The shooter killed 26 people - including first-graders, who would be about 6 years old - before turning the gun on himself.

"Our investigators at the crime scene ... did produce some very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use in, hopefully, painting the complete picture as to how - and more importantly why - this occurred," Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance told a news conference.

"This recovery is going to be not a sprint but a marathon. It's going to be a long process," said U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

Vance, the police spokesman, declined to describe the evidence gathered about the shooter's motives but did say the gunman forced his way into the school.

The woman found dead at the secondary crime scene was related to the shooter, a police news release said. Many media outlets have reported she was the shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza.

Nancy Lanza legally owned a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns of models commonly used by police, and a military-style Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine, according to law enforcement officials who also believe Adam Lanza used at least some of those weapons.

Nancy Lanza was an avid gun collector who once showed him a "really nice, high-end rifle" that she had purchased, said Dan Holmes, owner of a landscaping business who recently decorated her yard with Christmas garlands and lights. "She said she would often go target shooting with her kids."

Newtown was ranked the fifth safest city in America by the website NeighborhoodScout.com based on 2011 crime statistics.....snip~

My heart goes out to the parents and families of the victims.

I can only begin to imagine the living hell these 20 parents are experiencing.

I, for one, believe we must do better. I can not accept the notion that 'nothing could have been done to prevent this' or that these horrifically tragic mass murders are somehow the price we pay in the United State for our freedoms. We think of ourselves this compassionate country, and we proud of our advances in science and technology; then how is it that we can not prevent these acts of mass violence by disturbed individuals. How is it that we can not solve this problem and do a better job of protecting innocent lives?

No, people talk about how liberals want to ban guns and conservatives want to arm everyone. No one really talks about solutions to our problems. We need to have a real conversation about how to solve the problem of gun violence in this country. The first step is admitting we have one, the second step is talking about solutions and then we should get some laws in place that solve the problems. We have been dancing around the subject for decades.

Well that's an over-simplified load of bull****. In 1994 "gun violence" was addressed with a federal assault weapons ban. Nothing changed. The problem is that people are loosing their minds and snapping in the most violent of ways, and we have yet to find the time to talk about that, address it, or even think about finding a solution, because the issue is always turned into a giant either/or discussion about guns. Stop talking about the damned guns and start talking about the actual mental health and stability of people in this country and what we need to do about it.

Do you not think your healthcare system has played a big part in American conversations for the last 20 years or so, LOL? Yet so many still think healthcare is a privilege, even in this thread. :doh

Yeah, the conversation was about money, not the actual medical care.

Its not a question about gun control....Its about enforcing laws already on the book be they local and federal.

The puke perp had mental issues. Possibly a variant form of autism, some of which are characterized by violent outbursts.

But more significantly. He was a Goth. Goths which only exist because of a computer fraternity. He apparently was a fan of the Columbine shooters. Posted pics of their grisly death forms. Only via computer. He was active in twisted chat forums. Computers again.

A new member to the "I cannot make a rational argument" club. You have the most ignorant post in the thread.

Actually, we already ARE a state with an authoritarian government which can shoot us and run us over with tanks.

At least we can shoot back--for now.

Can you back this up with any facts ? Are were you thinking we were China, or some such nonsense ? Not saying we are not headed there, thanks to the idiot Obama voters. Am saying that we are not there yet, and I got live warm fingers to prove it ;)

This thread is about the 26 people killed in Newton. Not how you feel about gun control. I think it's telling that you, as well as the anti-gun nuts are more concerned about the guns used then the children that a$$hole killed.

The biggest issue here should be how the shooter got access to the children. He should have never been in the school to begin with. Taking away guns, or giving people more guns is less important than examining the breakdown in security.

It was reported he broke into the school by smashing a window. It's kind of hard to protect children from someone willing to go that far unless you want to lock the kids up in a prison with bars over the windows and an electrified perimeter.

Then, 2 minutes later:

So you condescendingly preach that the mere mention of gun control is a poor refection on the memory of these young children, yet 2 minutes later, you go on about how security is too lax and need to be addressed. :screwy

Talk about owning yourself. :doh

But I digress. This morning, one of the parents of one of the children that was brutally murdered by gunshot, through tears, talked about the need for Americans to take action and do something to prevent anther shooting tragedy. Are you prepared to call him a nut? Uncaring? Insincere?

Emerging from yesterday are the heroics of the teachers and staff to try and protect the children.

I know everyone is complaining about the gun-haters here but I am just glad the teacher-haters aren't posting.

Well, until we find a way to address the moral decay that seems to be gripping a large segment of our populace, I don't think any law will prevent this sort of thing. If people bent on breaking the law can get drugs, they can get guns. But if we want to "do something" that might actually stop someone bent on committing an act like this, we can start by chucking the concept of "gun free zones" in which the only people with guns are the crazies and giving teachers and administrators the option to arm themselves after they've received thorough professional training. Even with cops coming in with guns blazing, by the time they arrive people will be dead. As long as schools are easy pickings, you can bet your sweet bippy they'll continue to get picked by people who are bent on making a statement before they check out.

You have no clue what I am concerned about.

I am quite familiar with Aspergers, as one of my children has a form of it. Fortunately, not the type that can include a proneness to violent outbursts, which I believe afflicts about 25% of cases. Unfortunately, such as Curt Schilling has a son who is in that group, and it makes a bad situation more difficult. I have no idea if the shooter here had such outbursts prior to this. I am still appalled that the mother not only had the guns, but also took the boy to the range on occasion. This boy who tended towards the goth crowd, was clearly an outcast and misfit, even if not a conscious choice. The mother herself was apparently of the survivalist mentality, stockpiling food, and believing in the coming collapse of society. She had to be feeding this crap to the kid.

Then, by all indications, this kid planned this for at least a few days. And the mother apparently did not sense anything, and did not adequately secure her weapons.
