Two Gunmen at Newtown, Conn., Elementary School Shooting, One Dead [W:449/490/584]

I wonder if the shooter was a pot smoker. Certainly that connection would be more important to focus on than guns.

Something in his mind made him do it, not the inert piece of metal in his hand.
Yeah, you might be right! We hear about pot-crazed murders everyday.....NOT! Pot is to murder as guns are to fantasy nirvana.....

If these kids would have been a few years younger and still barely in the womb, or just having been birthed by accident in an abortion clinic, President Obama and most of his followers would have supported their murder

Guns aren't the problem

Culture is the problem

England and America are two wildly different realities much like Japan and America. In both England and Japan gun ownership was never as broad as it is in America. Both countries were never operated under a dictatorship either and I think you'd agree we'd like to keep it that way?

Is there any real solution - yes - I think there are many real solutions. When someone suggests a campus is "gun free" what they really mean is a target that can't shoot back. We depend on unionized law enforcement instead of neighbors and ourselves for security; dependence on the state/government instead of ourselves. We addres those we will reduce these horrible kind of events.

I think the reality is that there isn't any real solution that can prevent insanity like this. What type of person can not only consider this to be a choice but actually freaks out and actually does this?

I'm curious how you explain the differences in gun deaths in England vs. America?

You failed to highlight the words that ended the sentence that you did highlight...you left out "it's almost always in the USA." note the word ALMOST?

You don't hear of stuff like this happening in countries that have strict laws about owning guns

I heard it:lol:

26 dead including 18 children. This saddens me so deeply. I can't believe someone would do this to elementary school kids for no apparent reason.
At least 26 dead in shooting at Connecticut elementary school | Fox News

The people that do this kind of thing intentionally pick "soft" targets. When the urge to become a spree killer hits these people inevitably head to a school or a shopping mall or some other public place. You don't see them heading to police stations or other areas where their rampage is more likely to get cut short.

The other part of the equation is that behavior like this is usually unpredictable. It's like trying to judge when and where an earthquake will happen. You can see all the factors that make it a possibility but judging when to make the call to evacuate is pretty much impossible. I'd like nothing better than to prevent these lunatics from obtaining implements of destruction but that can't be accomplished without taking away other rights and justifying the "reasonableness" of taking away any rights is tentative at best.

The facts of the matter are that the vast majority of people are law abiding, sane and rational. Some small percentage of people are not. It's is the antithesis of freedom to apply judgement and consequences to the whole of a population simply because a limited percentage will not abide by the common rules of the society.

I agree. But you have some pretty ruthless kids that would try anything to get their hands on the guns. I think arming teachers is the best solution also in the end but too many people would focus on tragedies when they come around. (like a teacher going bonkers and killing the class clown, or gun theft) I really think that if teachers had the option to be armed (at this place and abound) then people like this would be stopped much earlier in their rampages.

It won't work. The guns would have to be safely secured in a place where students aren't likely to be around (and thus where teachers aren´t likely to be) and anybody who plans on shooting up a school with no regard for their own life will know where, be prepared and plan accordingly.

Ryan Lanza was shooter per CNN with no known connection to the school as of yet; apparently one of his parents found dead in mom's house (I assume it was his mother)

THAT'S IT YOU FRICKIN' GUN NUTS!!!!!!!! I WANT YOU ALL TO GO TO YOUR LOCAL WAL-MART, LOWES, FLEETFARM, MENARDS ETC. AND BUY ONE OF THOSE CHEAP FULL LENGTH MIRRORS. THEN WHEN YOU GET HOME, TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS AND YOUR SKIDDED UP LITTLE TIGHTY WHITEYS (BECAUSE I'M SURE YOU ARE ALL SO FAT THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN A WHILE) AND TELL YOUR TINY LITTLE PENIS THAT YOU ARE ALL COMPENSATING FOR (AND REPEAT THIS EXACTLY) "BECAUSE OF YOU BEING SO SMALL AND THAT I CAN'T DEAL WITH YOU BEING ONLY 4" LONG and 1 1/2" IN CIRCUMFERENCE WHEN YOU ARE HARD AND I CAN'T PLEASE ANY WOMAN NOT EVEN WITH SPECIAL MOVES. I HAVE TO HAVE A GUN AND BECAUSE I HAVE TO HAVE A GUN, MY FREAKISHLY SMALL LITTLE PENIS, THERE ARE A POSSIBLE 27 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN WHO WERE KILLED TODAY!!!!!!!"

EVERYONE THAT OWNS A GUN IS RESPONSABLE FOR THESE AND ALL OTHER GUN MURDERS!!!!!

Caps Lock doesn't help you make your point regardless of how stupid it is.

I live across the state from this elementary school...the people are frothing at the mouth.

Abortion? Now? That is really messed up man, really messed up....

It's tasteless while the bodies of murdered children are still warm. The sense of propriety in our society is absolutely for ****.

People are discussing capital punishment and wider healthcare provision too. If it were a terrorist attack they would be discussing religion and foreign policy.

These are all politically contentious issues, I'm not seeing a sacred cow other than being tasteful enough to leave one's political advocacy to a more appropriate time in all cases.

You're damn right America has a underlying issue.

We're a nation of hedonistic entitled narcissistic people who have the uncanny abillity to apply selective morality depending on our moods.

We've torn down the family unit and taken Christianity out of every public forum or entity.

It's a hollow existence when you worship stuff and ignore the crumbling moral decay around you.

Dave Chappelle said this best: The worst thing you can do to someone is call them crazy, because you are dismissing them.

EDIT: I also think it's important to point out that these shooters are all men, who have to live with the stigma of "manning up". This idea permeates our culture so deeply that it isn't even questioned; there are no advocates for men on this issue. Men are taught to "man up" and stuff their feelings down and hide them as much as possible, and not share them with others because they'll be perceived as being weak.

I don't remember what show it was, but I was listening to NPR recently and they were talking about some kind of study that was done about how women, even if they say they want their significant others to open up about their feelings, they really don't because it makes them uncomfortable. Women for the most part can't or don't know how to handle men when they express their feelings, particularly their negative ones and stuff they are struggling through. I think this significantly plays into these types of incidents because these men are forced to bottle up their feelings until they just snap.

An interesting perspective, but, this was a guy barely out of his teens.

The elementary school was K-4 grades:(

Ryan Lanza, the shooter, had a mother who worked at that school. She was a Kinders teacher. Most of the victims are Kinders.

Seriously? :doh

Yea seriously

Most of these kids were 4-5 years old in kindergarten. Probably were born right around when Obama first took office. Obama's record on abortion is no secret. He pushed for legislation 3 times that children be killed after botched abortions outside of the womb. Abortion is a "right" according the Obama and his minions on the Left.

If you people are going to scream for rights to be taken away, then let's start talking about "rights" being taken away. Like the "right" to murder innocent children in the womb. The only thing separating these kids that were murdered in this school and the thousands of kids (mostly black) murdered in the womb every single day are a few short years. If we're going to take "rights" away, we can start with abortion.

While we're at it, we can start training teachers on how to properly use firearms and arm them to the teeth as well.

Channel 3 local news just reported that an entire Kindergarten class was killed.

I'm finding it very difficult not to cry.

Yeah I heard earlier it was focused around a kindergarten class but was holding out hope that was wrong....

Another tragedy. Another missed opportunity to have an honest conversation about America's misuse of firearms.

If that's true, there aren't even any words to express what I'm feeling. Heartbroken is the closest I can come. These kinds of things are just so confusing in many ways.

Another terrible and unnecessary shooting, another year without SOME form of gun control. I really don't mean to politicize it, but that's honestly the very first thing that came to mind when I heard about this.

We can't sit idly by while the gun lobby and politicians say "oops, well, there's nothing that can be done

Something's gotta be done man, something's gotta be done.

I realize you don't like Obama and that's fine. To use this as political fodder for it is disgusting.
