Another horrific act of violence. I'm watching the news. The officers evacuating the children told them to "hold hands and close their eyes" until they were out of the school. I'm at a loss.

What a nightmare! As a parent and as a human being is there anything worse than children being murdered, no less elementary school kids who have never done anything to anyone...and you know that the last effects of this will harm so many more innocent people who's lives will be forever altered.

Why does this happen? Why is it so easy to get guns? You don't hear of stuff like this happening in countries that have strict laws about owning guns...it's almost always in the USA. We have an insane love for guns and God forbid me or anyone speaks out against guns the vitriol and attack against me and the people who believe as I do. I'm sure the great gun defenders are going to make all types of lame "2nd amendment rights" arguments because their lives are SO threatened!

Remember at VA Tech when so many nuts said that if the students there had guns less people would have died? Are they now going to say the same thing about these first graders?

Yeah, when it happens to children, I just cannot even understand it. No child could ever do anything to warrant this kind of violence.

I think the thing that's starting to get to me as well is that these kinds of callous mass shootings are happening more frequently and in so many different types of public places. They aren't just isolated anymore and that makes me worry about my safety and that of my friends and family. This is just getting to be too much.

I think we can have a valid debate on guns at a later date. Right now I find it tacky and in poor taste to focus on an issue that isn't going anywhere when there are 18+ children dead who deserve (if nothing else) a moment of quiet reflection and prayer/hope/thought for their surviving families and friends.

Well, it isn't like the UK hasn't had a mass school killing. You however also do not hear of it in places that do not kow tow to the "rights" of the mentally ill.

I'm glad they told them to do that. Once seen, the carnage cannot not be unseen.

Oh you mean like in Norway where that screwball killed 70 campers? Violence for the determined is going to happen, period. If anything, this is yet another sign that our schools need to have armed teachers or guards in them.

I kind of agree that it is a bit strange that every other issue can be speculated upon but the gun control question is considered tasteless. It's also a political debate web-site so...

That said, these kind of things have happened in other countries - quite recently too. In my opinion if somebody is going to convince themselves to kill a bunch of children, they'll probably go to the effort of acquiring a firearm no matter the controls.
